so what with the hurricane projected to fuck the shit out of my area tomorrow afternoon, I'm packing up all my stuff so it doesn't get messed up.

does anyone have any tips on how I'm supposed to protect my lolita?

I was thinking of wrapping it in plastic and putting it up somewhere high but I don't know if that's dumb. Maybe it's stupid but I have a lot of trees where I live and it would be even more upsetting something happened to my ~dream dress~. especially because most brand sounds like it melts under a little drop of water.

I don't want to sound like a 'tard, but wouldn't putting it up high up do more damage than say, putting it down in your basement? I dunno, I've never been in a hurricane.

    wat hurricane wtf u doin

Okay sooooooooo if it floods, everything on the ground is gone. Wrap your shit up in plastic, put it in plastic bags, tape that shit up. Don't put it too high, like on a cupboard, because it'll probably fall down, possibly into water or something. Do you have a dresser? Leave it in there all wrapped up.
    >> Anonymous 08/26/11(Fri)14:37 No.4894532
well, I say take a look at your main risk factors... You said you live by a lot of trees. How many of them are at risk of falling over and crashing down on your house? Which room do you think would be most affected?

Honestly, if I were you, and THAT concerned about it, I would say to transport them to somewhere safer... a friends house, a family member, and if nothing else, maybe a bank.

    Florida fag here.
We get a giant bin, and just throw everything important in it, stick it in the back of the car and GTFO.
Also, put a giant X of tape on your windows. This way if they break they won't shatter all over the floor.
We have giant sliding glass doors. In fact, 75% of our walls are giant panes of glass, so we do this every hurricane no matter the category.

Honestly I would just evacuate. Trees can fuck up a house in an instant. We had a Caregory 1, bordering on a 2 a couple of years ago, and a tree fell on our roof and completely took it out.

    Attic=No
    Basement=You're suicidal
I usually camp out in my bathroom during hurricanes. Just make a nice bed in my tub and stick everything important in the laundry room on top of the washer and dryer.

As a ,multiple hurricane survivor, I wish you luck OP. You, and your burando.

I agree with this as a fellow FLfag.
If you can stick it out, have a hurricane party with your family. If not, don't risk your safety. The little things really help like the X's. Make sure you always have an emergency kit, things to do, and ways to stay cool. Down here, it gets humid and stinkin' hot. So when we have no power, I feel like I'm dying. Same goes for cold. Make it an adventure, and please stay safe.

I hope you guys are ok, my guess is we wont hear from some of you guys for a while after this but my heart goes out to you. Stay safe. And I dont know about brand but I do collect bjd's which are around the same price values. I keep them in their boxes (which I guess you guys dont have for lolita dress's) then seal those in bags, then put those in bins when were expected to have a storm. I mean these items are like my valuables I've put so much money in them, I can understand wanting to protect them. But bins and air tight bags are my recommendation. And if your afraid of flooding dont put them on the floor. Again stay safe. I hope everyone makes it through allright.

Suppose it might be too late to go get one but if you can get one a dry bag will keep everything completely dry. Their used mainly in water sports but enough plastic bags will probably do the trick if you don't want to buy one.

Almost done prepping my place. Living in New Orleans for 15 years certainly more than prepared me for this.

If you live in NYC, they are starting to shut down the public transportation system at noon tomorrow. Please be advised of the evacuation districts you are in, if worse comes to worst.

    Here are the zones: http://www.nyc.gov/html/oem/downloads/pdf/hurricane_map_english.pdf

Make sure to have plenty of water, candles, matches and clean towels in case it floods or the power goes out. Charge everything that needs to be charged before hand. In case the water gets shut off, fill the bath tub with water so that you can flush the toilet and for other water needs.

Here's a good checklist to go on: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/prepare/supply_kit.shtml

I don't think the hurricane itself will do much damage, but if you want to be safe, tape x's on the windows so that if they break, they won't shatter.

Good luck to everyone and see you on the other side! Better safe than sorry!

We don't get hurricanes here, but we do get floods, so...

Wrap everything securely in plastic bags, then get some plastic storage bins and put them in the bins and tape them closed. Store on a fairly high shelf in a small closet (small rooms are more structurally secure than larger ones).

It's always better to overreact than underreact. If you overreact, you'll just feel kind of dumb afterwards. If you underreact, you'll be in much worse shape.

If you choose to stay home, make sure that every member of your family has an INDIVIDUAL emergency kit that contains clean water, a basic first aid kit, 72 hours of food, clean clothing, and other necessities (including photocopies of identification cards, insurance papers, and social security cards, just in case). THIS INCLUDES PETS. A lot of people forget about their pets when they create emergency plans. Make sure you stock up on pet food, clean bedding, a favorite toy, and a pet first aid kit (a basic human one will do in a pinch, but for future reference, pet stores, emergency preparedness companies, the Red Cross carry pet-specific kits that are good to have). Make sure that you have a contingency plan and that everyone you live with knows it (ie: emergency contacts, a safe meeting place, what to do if a disaster strikes while they/you are away from the house).

I'm a volunteer community liaison with my local police department. I do emergency preparedness presentations all over the city. If you have specific questions, ask and I'll try to answer them.

Pack it up safe, and hang on to it. Don't put it in an attic, and don't you go up there either. Lots of people die up there, because the water gets them trapped if it rises that high. No basement either, that would fill up with water. If you're in a high threat area, maybe you should find a safer place to stay. Trees crush people's houses all the time in a hurricane.

I hope you can stay safe, that's what matters most.

I live in the EXTREME zone on OP's map. They've been warning us all week, so I mention to my boyfriend that it's time to start preparing.

    >Him: "What do we need water for? Where will we put it all?"

    Later
    >Me: "We should fill up the gas tank."
    >Him: "We have half a tank."

    Later:
    >Me: "We should take the A/C unit out of the window so water doesn't come in/nothing gets damaged."
    >Him: "Water can't come in if the A/C unit is there."

    I walk to work.
Fucking hell. Even if it does not hit us to hard, it will be one hell of a rain storm to walk through, when I would rather be home with my cats.
And they will not close down the mall, oooh no, not until it is really bad and they do not want to be responsible for us and tell us to GTFO.
    This is going to suck.

Since hurricane Irene is going to hit the Northeast, I thought I'd share some of my expertise as a longtime Florida native and hurricane survivor. No need to thank me.

    1. Familiarize yourself with the Saffir-Simpson wind scale, summarized here:
Category 1: wind, rain, lightning, hail, tornadoes, power outages
Category 2: tsunamis, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria
Category 3: Al-qaeda wishes they could do this much damage
    Category 4: Wrath of God
    Category 5: Apocalypse

    2. In the aftermath of a major hurricane, there is frequently a breakdown in law and order. New Yorkers will likely not notice any changes. Other new englanders should arm themselves. Wait.....you guys are into gun control, aren't you? In that case, just give all your worldly possessions and/or anal virginity to the first person who asks.

    3. If you are stranded in a disaster area, don't panic. FEMA will come to the rescue just like they did in New Orleans after Katrina.

    4. If you are evacuating before the storm arrives, make sure to bid farewell to your home, as you will never see it again.

    5. If you live in a low-lying coastal area and are refusing to evacuate, you are about to win a Darwin award. Please leave your address with the national guard so that they can recover your remains.

    6. It is advisable to have emergency supplies ready if you are not evacuating. Suggested supplies include several pounds of beef jerky; bottled water; first aid kit consisting of a bottle of aspirin, a piece of gauze, and a rusty razor blade; portable gas powered generator (fuel not included); assortment of knives, axes, or spears to facilitate defense from marauding bands of cannibals; complete set of encyclopedias in order to restart civilization.

I'll say the same thing that I said to the people saying being prepared is "overreacting", if the worst thing that happens this weekend is us "overreacting", then it'll be a good weekend.

Skip the party, prepare without him. I get that people here don't really know what's it's like to be in a hurricane like this and they don't understand, but NYC is an island and a good portion is under sea level. Not to mention NOT PREPARED FOR HURRICANES.

Shake him. Shake him like a red headed step child.

    7. Before the hurricane strikes, secure your home from wind damage by parking the aircraft carrier USS George Bush (CVN 77) in front of your home. The carrier's bulk will shield your property from flying debris, and it's nuclear reactors will be useful in case the power goes out.

    8. Stay tuned to local news broadcasts to determine how frightened you should be.

    9. Many celebrities will mention how upset they are about your plight. Do not badger them by asking for more concrete assistance such as food, water, or shelter. They don't actually ca-- er, I mean they have prior commitments which prevent them from leaving their homes at this time.

    10. During a major storm, the Internet will likely not be accessible. Make sure you read any important, life-saving tweets before the storm hits.

    11. During the storm, pray. Promising to become a member of the clergy if you live is especially effective.

    12. VERY IMPORTANT: do not attempt to contact President Obama for assistance. You may disturb his golf game.

Maybe it's because I'm stupid, but I'm more annoyed than scared about the hurricane. I live in California but I go to school in Connecticut. I was supposed to be moving into my dorm today (Saturday) and I had a few things I wanted to do first so I flew in on Wednesday with my family. Then yesterday (Friday), we got a call from my school and they've decided to postpone everything for a week because of the hurricane. It's so frustrating that they didn't decide and tell us until the day before I was supposed to be there. Anyway, it would be a big hassle to try and fly home and then fly back again and it would be pretty expensive to stay in a hotel and rent a car for the extra time. My mom and I are staying at my grandparents' house in New Jersey, while my dad is hopefully flying back home (the hurricane could very well complicate this). I don't know anything about hurricanes (being from California, I only know about earthquakes) and being at my grandparents' place is really awkward. I was stressed enough about going back to school, but now I'm also trying not to panic about the hurricane so that I don't burden my mom. But I know it's no use freaking out so I'm just hoping that this hurricane isn't as bad as it's supposed to be and that everyone makes it through safely.

Well, at least you will be on the spot with your grandparents in case there is any damage to their home or any sort of emergency. It would be extra annoying (and sad) if you also had to travel to their house through the aftermath to help or heaven forbid attend a funeral.

Use it as an excuse to explore their house and ask a million questions and get to know your grandparents and maybe it won't be so awkward. I don't know if your grandparents are like mine were, the two I knew were both super cool old people who did a ton of stuff back in the day (one was a marine in ww2, the other a fighter pilot) and my grandma had all these old slides so I got together with her one day and we organized them and I set up a projector for her and she told me all the stories of the people in them. I wish I had written some of it down :(

Pfft, don't I know it. It's a cat 1, people. Barely out of the tropical storm range and hurricanes -always- lose strength once they reach the ground. If you're in an area that is a lowland that floods everytime there's a big rainstorm, pack things up in plastic or bring the shit with you once you go inland. Expect some power outages, some debris flying around, etc. This isn't going to lift cars off the ground or anything.

I've lived in the coast my entire life and my entire neighborhood was washed away by Katrina. Around Category 3 is when shit starts to hit the fan. Otherwise, if you live inland, you're probably good.

The media/news is just making a big deal out of this because they're desperate for another katrina. A lot of this shit is unnecessary. 'Extreme'? Are you kidding me?

Long Islander here, it's just raining a little, not even the torrential downpour we've had in the past few weeks. It's not supposed to hit us for another 10 hours or so I believe.

I think that the main danger that the tri-state area is facing is more flooding and water damage, and structural/wind damage more because the majority of buildings up here aren't built to handle hurricanes/tropical storms. There's also thousands of old people who are just flat out refusing to leave their homes.

    >>4899316
I also think the most fatalities are going to stem from people doing retarded things because they haven't been though a situation like this and simply don't know better/ain't got no damn sense.

I was really proud of NYers yesterday because the grocery store seemed calm and not too out-of-control at around 6pm. Turns out all these fools were just waiting until ~today~ to go get their shit together.

No offense to anyone that's concerned in the upper states, especially in NYC (because either way they'll have to worry about flooding)...but...it's a category 1 storm. I'm sure by the time it hits you it will only be a nasty tropical storm. Just don't over-worry yourselves and don't panic. I blame the media for always hyping up storms ever since Katrina. Though that is very true and I personally am not that concerned ((NYer here)) I think the biggest problem here is that we have a lot of old buildings that were not made to withstand hurricane winds. I believe the same thing could go for some parts of NJ.

Not to mention that we have so much shit on our streets, there will probably be a lot of debris flying around which will contribute to the damage.

New Orleans isn't the only place that was hit, just the one the media anchored onto the most because you can see people suffering ~LIVE~.

In Biloxi, which actually took the burnt of the storm, the flood surges wiped out miles inland. There was no power or running water for weeks and people were looting the decrepit stores for what they needed. Gas to get out spiked and stations had to close down.

Much of the people evacuated, yes, but there were still some who couldn't. People who couldn't handle the trip (elderly, sick, etc) and the families who couldn't leave them behind.

The one saving grace was because we were used to hurricanes and help was more readily available because we weren't blocked by bureaucracy.

In any case, Katrina was no doubt a storm that comes only a scant few in a lifetime. New Orleans was just grossly mishandled, but it isn't to downplay that Katrina itself was a natural disaster in every sense of the word.

I hope everyone is doing alright. It hasn't seemed like anything more than your average storm from where I am so I don't know if that means it wasn't as bad as expected, it skipped over New Jersey (I'm fairly close to NYC), or if the worst is yet to come.

    >>4898878
That's true, I don't think I could handle it if I lost another grandparent this year.

After the storm is done, I'm hoping to poke around in their attic if it's okay with them. It would be really awesome if they had an extra sewing machine lying around that they would let me take with me to school (I left mine at home because I thought it would be a hassle to travel with.)

I would ask them for stories about their pasts, but I really struggle with sitting still and they tend to talk really slowly, taking many long pauses to try and remember what they were saying. Also, my Pop Pop is just really hard to deal with. He's so grumpy all the time and I feel like I can't move without doing something wrong. I'm trying to stay out of his way because I know I'm going to start arguing with him and telling him off, which in addition to being disrespectful and something I know I would regret later, would just cause more problems for my mom. I'm avoiding my Grandmom because if I do something wrong and she's involved (like if she gives me permission to do something that I don't know my Pop Pop doesn't want me to do), he'll yell at her.

The only really worthwhile thing to do here is to look at old photos. My mom always had the best (dorkiest) glasses and the pictures from our family vacations from when I was younger are the best. In every picture, my older brother is really chubby and looks nothing like he does now and I'm so scrawny and tan that I look like a starving child from a third world country that's on one of those ads asking for donations.

Everyone keeps cracking jokes on the East coast about "oh it was just a baby earthquake" and "oh it's only a category 1 hurricane"... which is true, but could cause some issues considering the area is not prone to these disasters, and so everyone may not be prepared. Buildings are not built to withstand these types of things, so they might be at high risk.

It's all the unknowns that's the issue.

This is the most overrated hurricane in the history of hurricanes. I'm on the Delaware coast in Sussex County and the worst shit going down here is a shitton of tornadoes touching down in multiple towns destroying homes. So, the actual hurricane isn't even the one doing extensive damage. It's tornado buddies are. Granted, my neighborhood borders a huge canal and the entire front of the neighborhood is flooded but that's about it, man. I still have power and cable, no trees are down, and a tornado hasn't blown the house away yet. The eye of the storm isn't here yet, so there's a lot more of the storm left but come on, it's not going to get much worse. All these fucking people that raided grocery stores, boarded up all their windows and doors, and are hiding in their bathrooms are fucking pussies. Overrated bullshit fosho.

I worked all through the blizzards in 2010 (3-5 feet of snow on the ground at any given time). People would complain because we'd be out of stock of items. I'd try to calmly explain that the trucks couldn't get through because of the weather. Nobody wanted to hear it.

So, after giving up on that, I didn't tolerate any complaints. I'd just say "sorry, we are out of stock until the weather improves" and walk away before I could hear complaints.

You'd be surprised what people will leave their house for in the middle of a huge storm. Fucking idiots deserve to be blown away.

Well, NYC isn't prepared for a hurricane and parts are under sea level. I understand the concern. Not to mention in the past week we've had major issues with our subway pumps failing because of the previous storms and had to shut down parts of it. So them shutting it down was probably a good idea.

If a tree does fall on my house, it's a 2 story so I should be safe on the first floor and the one tree that could fall, it's branches reach my house, not the main trunk. Also, it's on the other side of the house. Now granted I do have a tree outside my window on the LE, but it's pretty grounded and it's in the courtyard, so yet again, I should be safe.

I grew up in St. Louis, actually. It's a myth that's been around for aaaages. My grandmother said it once during a storm and everyone rolled her eyes. lol

The pressure thing isn't really significant enough to do any harm. What breaks the windows is actually all the debris being thrown at high speeds. Opening them gives the debris a smaller target area, but can contribute to more overall damage. If you ever saw those tornado safety videos as a kid, with the piece of straw impaling a tree, you probably remember how violent those storms can get in terms of wind speeds.

"As of 7 a.m., there were 16,000 outages on Staten Island; 6,000 in Brooklyn; 4,500 in the Bronx; and 16,000 in Westchester County. There were minimal outages in Manhattan."

All this waiting, just want her to do her damage and leave.

You may be right. I've been following a live blog and didn't read anything about that. Mind posting some links?

Well most of the stuff I've heard from the TV news, and when I check news sites they talk about the storm like it's already passed.

    I'm very confused.

LIfag here reporting back in, we're just north of Sunrise Hwy, smack in the middle of the island. Some strong winds but we've still got power. I know some people north up the Hudson have lost power already. I can't look out any windows though since I live underground.

    Canadafag here again needing updates.
    Are you guys still okay/safe?
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:12 No.4903607
Let me start off by saying I'm glad that it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

I'm just really mad at the media & the governors/mayors for hyping the living fuck out of a storm that wasn't much worse than what we'd been dealing with all August. People were terrified, buying the entire bottled water/battery aisle, and wondering whether to evacuate even when they were in low-risk areas. And now it's like, what were we even worried for?

As it was stated earlier in this thread, it's better to err on the side of safety. Overreaction is far better than apathy in a situation like this.

SFloridafag here. You guys actually got it pretty bad. I guess that's what you get for having rivers and variable terrain and scenery D:<

Oh, I agree. Nothing short of "get the hell out" would get people to leave the shore during the end of the summer season.

However, my concern is... they spent all this time hyping this weak hurricane as a "monster storm!!!!!!!!!". What happens for the next big storm? People are going to go, "hm, they hyped up the last one and it was nothing" and maybe not heed the warnings.

Don't forget there is a lag between the rain/hurricane and the flooding. I think by time up there deals with that this week coming that people will listen to the hype next time as well.

Or they'll be mass casualties, and then the next one people will learn the "better to over prepare then under prepare" deal.
