I've been a tripfag for two years now, and I started out using a name so that my other friends who used /cgl/ could see it was me talking to them.

Honestly I'm sick of tripfags now, especially the ones who use /cgl/ as their own personal forum. The ones who don't contribute at all, and only post in the huge circlejerk threads, who don't even cosplay or wear lolita but expect everyone to fawn over them.

Oldfag here. I've been on 4chan since before "weeaboo" meant anything and on /cgl/ since 06, when it seemed to me basically an extension of Cosplayfucks. Back then people used the term "n00dz" in all seriousness, and did it often.

Kipi floods would knock good threads off the last page and were often a tool for someone to get rid of pictures of themselves they didn't want. Miyu and Adella caused all sorts of rage. People kept being laughed at for thinking Pikminlink was male.

It was in many ways a more fun place to be, but now you're much more likely to see really high-quality stuff. Tripfags have come and gone, most of them weathering a lot of abuse and derailing many a thread in the process.

Things that make me nostalgic, much more than Kipi, would be JJ and Sey are cute threads (not headband bra spam), Aki hate raging for 10 threads back-to-back, Jessica Nigri debates and Gingeranne's hilarious wigs.

As one of the older trips that mostly flies under /cgl/'s radar I do notice a change in the nature one generates a tripcode. In the past you usually tripped because you had a reputation on the board and people constantly refer to you so you trip so that people know which posts were yours. It was something you "earned" (as that implies having a tripcode is some sort of badge of honor) but it was something that was quasi given to you by the masses, kinda like a nickname with friends. When I first started tripping when the "older" generation was still active such as Zal, Maguma, Masa, Mr. Freeman, Big Wes, Mika, Scriptfag etc. Many of these people still post but not with as much frequency as before.

Nowadays people are quiet liberal with creating trips for themselves and there isn't a huge stigma behind them. While I do like how /cgl/ isn't TRIPGAZ SOOO EVIIIIILLLLL, I do think its a bit harder to grasp the personality of many of the newer trips as they all seem...flat...for lack of a better term.

I lurked here for a while before posting, and even in the year or so I've been here, things have changed a lot.
OP, I do understand some of what you're saying, thanks to some of the older users in this thread. Certainly, the attitude towards taking a name for yourself on /cgl/ has changed drastically.
But, from viewing a lot of threads, the names people take for temporary purposes (tracking stories in weeaboo horror threads/knowledgeable about certain subjects in terms of cosplay construction.) But I frankly don't see a problem with most of them. A lot of the tripusers that I've seen are very friendly, and because of that, people are welcomed to take names and join the small community that has taken form here.

However, what I have a problem with, are people who complain (and I know I've seen a couple) that tripfags are whoring up the board and blah blah blah tripfagsareevilzomg. When someoen posts that in a perfectly normal thread, the whole thing tends to get derailed and everything just turns to shit.
From what I've seen, taking a name on /cgl/ is akin to, as OP said, taking a username on coscom or gaia or whatnot. With the name comes a little bit of recognition, which grows as you make better cosplays and interact more with the community. However, it also paints you as a clearer target for trolling/drama-mongering as well, which is both detrimental to this board and to the people involved as well.
If you have beef with someone, my opinion is that it's better to confront them in private about it, and try to resolve it. It does no one any good to amplify the drama and get more people involved in such drama by posting it here. Plus, it does make you (the troll in question) seem like so much of a coward if you pick on someone who takes a name and confronts you, only to dodge their questions by hiding under anonymity.

I think /cgl/ went through this one period of time (which moot seemed to recognize) where EVERYTHING was a vendetta, or turned into a vendetta. It might just have been me, but for a couple of months, this board was just /drama/.

I like where it is at now. I think tripusers could calm down a bit, and post with more reservation, as well as the newcomers. It's always good to lurk more before posting.

Seeing /cgl/ grow more supportive is great. I think our progression in terms of self-posting, and how seagulls tend to help and give advice to each other, is a huge improvement. I would never want to reverse the change.

I think we've still stuck to the heart of this board, to our core: dress-up. Whether it's cosplay or lolita, /cgl/ should always stick to its passion.

Before I came to be, people feared this place and thought they were completely fucked when someone shitposted them here. There were few other tripfags, and they were most definitely anonymous in the sense that their names didn't tie in with a cosplay name or anything else for that matter.

And then I came along and flipped the entire board upside down.

I pulled back the curtain and showed everyone that /cgl/ wasn't /b/ by openly arguing with people with a tripcode, knowing full well of the possible consequences.

So if you had to trace it all back to someone who started the entire notion that tripcoded names (or just namefagging) resulted in a social network outside of /cgl/. Well, shit. I'll take a bow.

Love it or hate it, I took a big risk that now played out into what you see today.

It's not exactly old but the only thing I ever really came to appreciate on here within the past couple years was when those two siblings that had been separated were able to contact each other on here. It was funny when people just started posting all caps threads to get the attention of one of them so they could e-mail each other.

Also when the board accidentally got turned red for half a day or so and everyone just started posting porn immediately.

Aside that this place has always been kind of like /b/ for girls. It's gotten kind of worse lately, I'm kind of surprised people haven't even gotten banned for the unrelated threads (especially the erotic fanfic ones but it's not like there's been a mod on here since Fran or whatever her name was got banned)

When I first started coming here it was mainly people posting cosplay pictures from various events; comicon, dragoncon, anime con any of those kind of conventions where people cosplayed. And there were a few discussion threads about how to create costumes. Now its just a discussion area about costumes, what color skirt goes with what wig, how far along is your costume, is buying a pre-made costume cheating? It is really sad now.
