Mori girl doesn't really have a hard-written handbook like lolita does. Sure there are some general things, like mixing textures and layers, loose silhouettes and dresses, tights and leggings, vintage items, etc; but these are just commonly used items.
I see a lot of people who automatically think mori girl is the OTT layers and layers and layers, but really mori girl can also be very simple as well (pic related).
Your main focus should always be to look like a 'girl from the forest'.

The best way to learn the do's and dont's is by example. Look at as many examples of outfits established as mori girl as you can.

Look at vintage stores for most everything. Good sweaters, good shoes, scarves, hats, etc. If you want a good base which you can dress up with accessories, I'd suggest getting a Gunne Sax dress. Even if it's not perfect, it can be easily altered. There's also good stores on taobao (go look at the taobao thread for details)

Good colors to use: deep red, most any shade of brown, and forest green. As for white, you can never go wrong with cream.

Ebay has an awesome choice of socks, stockings, and pantyhose which are pretty essential in the style. Ebay will probably also have sweaters that will work.

Scarvs, ponchos, sashes, and shoes can also be found on etsy. There's a vintage section which is good for the shoes and the handmade if pervect for anything knit.

And purses are also easy for mori. Vintage stores and ebay will have carpet bags, which are awesome, but purses aren't as hard to find.

Something like looking "ethereal" or mori, like you came from the forest, is really suited for anyone. Even fatties like me, you just have to be careful what you use.

If you're pale I would say stay away from cream-like colours. I know I'm pale, and I look awful in cream, and no amount of love can change that.

I usually see the makeup looking as natural as it can, but I've seen a lot of girls put on tons of blush and a bit of lipstick, too.(probably to get that flushed "fuck, it's cold out here in the woods" look haha)

I think it depends on your skin tone. I'm warm/pale, and I look amazing in cream and crappy in white.
I think the emphasis is more on having "soft" looking colors that are nature inspired. Like I'm sure you could wear rusty colors like autumn leaves, burgundy, apple or hunter green, etc. in mori as well. I feel like anything that has a handmade look and is made out of natural fibers has the potential to work as part of a mori girl coord.

All of this is a good start, and I think thrift shops and handmade shops would be a good place to start. You might also check out places that sell to hipsters who are into the "vintage" trend... not all of that is the same as mori, but some of the common colors and motifs show up there.

If a shapeless silhouette doesn't suit you, I think it can still be mori looking with a more fitted waist. Try wide ribbons used as belts, sweaters that are fitted at the waist and have loose, soft open necks or a sleeves over hands effect, high waist looks inspired by dirndls, etc.

Mori is scandanavian inspired, and always looks ethereal. I think if it has an overall feel of something from a fairytale illustration... Elfin or little red riding hood like, it should be okay.

These giant hair buns right on top of the head are also a pretty common hairstyle.

I'll join in. I am really starting to get into Mori too! It is a bit intimidating to try out though. I am certain that if I tried I would just look like a bag lady.

I just bought a really cute top that is so mori, and I'm gunna match it with this little floral-print skirt I have, but the skirt is a darker cream than the top and I didn't notice.

I have really horrible social anxiety problems. It's so hard to interact and talk to people without feeling like I'm making (or going to make) a giant fool of myself. Feels bad man.

This is weird, because the reason I got into alternative fashions is because I use it as a way to hide from my anxiety. When I was a little girl and I got scared, I'd put on more clothes or if I had a bad nightmare, I'd put on every piece of jewelry I owned.

You can tell I feel secure and happy if I'm wearing comfy, normal looking clothing, the more makeup/jewelry/ I'm wearing, the weirder my clothes look, and the longer it takes me to do my hair/makeup, all mean I'm filled with anxiety.

So maybe you can find ways to make your clothes fill you with confidence? Mori layers are good to hide behind. And it's definitely a fashion where you can wear good luck charms or favorite comfy pieces of clothing.

when it comes to mori girl, I love thrift stores for it. thrift stores have lots of bulky 80s sweaters and vests. I also have a pair of slightly oversized jeans that I roll up at the bottom and wear with cute socks exposed and brown loafers.

braids and bobs seem like some of the biggest mori girl hair staples. there's always curls and/or waves too.

as for makeup, it seems like very natural, very smooth looks are best. thick eyebrows, blush that looks a bit like a light sunburn, freckles. no eyeliner/dark eyes is what I see mostly, but I think mascara is often used anyway. a natural, pink lip is also ideal.

I also need way more socks for mori girl styles. never enough!

I am not here to offense anyone and some Mori looks really good... but where are the petticoats, ribbons, lace, corsets and frills? It is mindboggling

I really like this style, but I feel as if there's a really fine line to tread between looking pretty and forest-y and looking like, as an earlier anon said, a bag lady. Go for it, anyway. Depending on your individual skintone, pale colors can work really well against darker skin. A lot of girls I've seen look really awesome with paler colored clothing in general, usually in desaturated colors (ie: yellow cream instead of off white or pale peach instead of tan) rather than straight neutrals.

I really want to get started in mori so this thread is very helpful.

Generally, mori girls have either long well kept but messy hair, or short messy bobs ~ but really, its the natural look they are going for, sort of flowy. So if you can pull that off with short hair, go for it. Maybe get some long floral hairclips, or you could always go for a cute woollen/furry beanie. Keep it natural and as unstyled as possible.
