I think most of the Japanese ones are just small motels you rent by the hour, but they don't have their own girls for legal reasons. But a lot of the bars do have girls, except they mainly try to make you buy expensive drinks and take tips for themselves.

The Chinese ones are more like in the movies, most famous one is Tian Shang Ren Jian night club. Club, hotel, KTV private rooms, sauna all rolled in one and they actually have girls/ guys lined up for customers to choose from.

I use to live right next to it, you can see girls getting off "work" late night early in the morning sometimes.

I doubt it's even the majority. When I lived in Japan, it was common enough for people to talk about going to a love hotel with a new partner or someone they've hooked up with.

There are a lot of prostitutes around those hotels so you can bet they get used for that.

But I'd say the majority of times they get used it's by young couples having a giggle.
