I don't think we've played this game before, Seagulls. Shall we try it?1. Remember your very first convention.2. Either hunt down a picture you took then OR3. Post a picture of what was popular thenFirst convention: 2006Gravitation cosplayers eeeeeeverywhere.
Katsucon 2008, picture speaks for itself.
First con- 2004.What was populDATTEBAYOFuck this is from 07 but it's the only related picture I have. They're also my friends. fmlfmlfml I feel bad now ._.
First convention: 2003FFX and FFX-2 was a new trend
Not my first con, but the first one I cosplayed toAnime Expo in Anaheim, 2004Lots of Trigun cosplayersalso my finger was in like every single one of them
>>4859467They look pretty decent to me. Way better than the spray hair and running make-up kinds we had.
My first con was A-kon 15 in 2004. I don't want to post my picture but I remember being very impressed by these two.
>>4859530That was my first con too! We might have seen each other. Here was me :3
>>4859493oh crap I lied, this was San Diego Comic Con 2004loads of trigun and my first Man-Yuna sighting
>>4859494Haha, there was definitely plenty of that as well. This was before I got to know them and I guess I took a picture because they were the only ones who really impressed me at the time. They cosplay Phoenix Wright and Persona nowadays.
First con was Aka-kon 2000 in Vancouver. My best friend and I made the trip from northern BC.What was popular... what was popular... I honestly can't remember. I remember seeing some Devil Hunter Yohko and Evangelion, but I don't know if it was popular or not. Here, have this photo from someone's Aka-kon 2000 page.
My first con was Anime Expo 2005 in Anaheim.I remember seeing a lot of Naruto, Inuyasha and Final Fantasy X.
My first convention was the first Oni-con in Houston 2005. I remember seeing some Inuyasha and Gravitation. Oh, and this one and shortly after there were several different types of ninjas. Like Swiffer, Febreze, Raver, etc. Probably existed before, but figured I'd mention it as I first saw Febreze ninja at Oni.
I am kind of grateful we used mostly kodak disposable cameras way back when. It's harder to find evidence of awful shit. Case in point, Filia from Slayers Try made from horrible satin I found at wal-mart almost ten years ago. No regrets, amazing times were had back when we were the minority anime faggots at Megacon.
A-kon 2006.Inuyasha.Everywhere.
>>4859698aaah, the ninja wars.Back when Naruto was still acceptable for people to be into, they spun off the swiffer ninjas (unintentionally, I believe the guy just grabbed the nearest "staff" like object) which promptly spawned the rival "febreeze" gang.Good times.Of course, then they realized that some cops are dicks and can arrest you for spraying febreeze in public as some sort of "chemical assault"
San Diego Comic Con 2007.My friend cosplayed as FF7:AC Tifa that year and got stopped really often for pictures, so this was when it was still pretty popular. I didn't know much about cosplay then so I can't think of many fandoms... I saw a lot of Stormtroopers and a Jesus cosplayer though.
Youmacon 2005Full Metal Alchemist.
Anime Boston 2007The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was the newest big thing and on the first cusp of exploding in popularity, harking the start of dancing like anime/Vocaloid/random meme videos
Haha, oh wow.I'm the Kagome and this is Otakon 2000. At least I can look back on this and laugh now.
First con was Shinnenkai in 1997.Popular things were Ranma 1/2, Bubblegum Crisis, 3x3 Eyes (there were three Yakumos in the masquerade, which only had about 15 people/groups in it), Tenchi Muyo, Urusei Yatsura, Sailor Moon.I'm so old.
>>4860376that time of the year sounds beautiful
I have no pictures (though I think I found them online somewhere once) and:Inuyasha. Inuyasha everywhere.Rurouni Kenshin.Chobits.Something like 2003 I think.
Otakon 2000.I have pictures stored away somewhere, but I'm too tired to look for them.Fushigi Yugi, Lain, Sailormoon, Slayers, Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer, Gundam Wing, and Digi Charat we're all pretty popular
>>4860434were
>>4860434There was a time when Fushigi Yugi was a popular cosplay/anime choice? Why wasn't I going to cons then? D= Otakon, no less. I live in effing Baltimore.(Oh yeah, I was like ten...but still, I love FY ;_;)
>>4860434Oh shit. Malice Mizer was popular? I'd love to go back and see that.
my first con ever (2005 I think) threw together this pikachu gijinka because I thought it would be cute. only gijinka at the whole con. started to make a tradition out of it. Last year (2010) I am at the same con, hundreds of gijinka pikachus everywhere and I feel like a tool :( fuck my life
>>4860434I remember those times. J-rock cosplay in general was popular, but the big ones were definitely Dir n Grey and MM. Mana cosplayers errywhere. In 2000, I also seem to remember Weiss Kreuz to be popular. Saber Marrionette, too. Revolutionary Girl Utena.
>>4860504When I started attending conventions, I was lucky to see one Malice Mizer era Gackt and one VK era Kyo. That was it.Though sense then I've attended some Jrock photoshoots but they were 85% the Gazette by then with some Miyavi's sprinkled in and the rest were assorted.
Megacon 2003 Popular stuff, definitely Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X (not much has changed). It was early in the year so the ONE X-2 Gunner Yuna cosplayer was probably the coolest thing EVER since they'd only released a few pictures of it so far! I gotta admit, I totally loved her. ;D
