2.16 MB New to Cosplay Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)11:27 No.4856648
Hi /cgl/ ... I'm new around here, I have to admit I am primarily a /b/tard. But I had a chance to go to Comiket last week and took the opportunity to go in costume - it was my first major Cosplay event... and it was a lot of fun. I was wondering if anyone else was around Comiket last week?

And wondering if there was any constructive criticism on my outfit... and yeah, I know I gotta fix the hair.

tl;dr New to cosplay, saying hello and asking advice.

    pic related, I'm Lupin.

the only criticism i have is that you should have been in the gym instead of taking pictures with teenage girls otherwise thats a decent lupin

Lupin has bigger sideburns than that, man. Either grow you some mutton chops to try again or get some temporary spray-on hair. Or shoe polish.

I got the Jacket made for me in Vietnam last year, should have seen the lady's face when I asked her to make me something that looked like Lupin's Jacket... a pretty sound investment at 60 bucks.

I'm pretty sure the gun I am using isn't perfect ... I grabbed it kind of last minute. Nobody mentioned it at Comiket... but I felt a little silly.

I would, but living in Japan ... lets just say most thrift store (Recycle Shops) goods just don't fit me at all. And it was nice to have something that was made for the purpose. I have some extra pockets and stuff inside for holding the gun and cool wipes. They came in really handy.

oww... god no. To be honest, the secondary allure to Lupin (other than I love the old animations) is that there's little makeup and beauty care that needs to go into the costume. I know I was the fastest changer in the Comiket Costume change room...

I even helped someone with their zipper. The things I saw in that room, they cannot be unseen.

Maybe its just because I am a newbie. But I was surprised at the sheer amount of crossdressing going on. I mean, hey, not that I'm judging.

And yes, I had to stop and tell myself "No... that's a dude... it must be a dude, because this is the dude's changing room".

    Several times.

Damn those scrawny hairless japanese men and their penchant for looking more realistically girly than the actual japanese women.

This is so weebish of me but I'm going to Japan sometime next year and I really want to experience the Japanese cosplay scene. Would comiket be the best place to do that? We were originally looking into Tokyo Game Show but they seem to have a lot of strict rules for cosplay, seemed like more of a hassle than anything.

Would I be able to navigate Comiket with a friend knowing only really basic Japanese? Any advice you could give?

My GF's Sister is the chick that got me into Cosplay - and she makes all of her stuff. Seemed like more than half of the people out here made their own stuff... The ready-made costumes out here that I found were all pretty low quality, all the good looking stuff was handmade.

I didnt feel any elitism about either - just my own thoughts, and I think that making your own has a good feeling in it.

    >>4857000
Funny, no I couldn't! But since my GF was acting as Camera-man it was very much eyes-only, lol.. Although a lot of times the girls put their hands on Lupin, including one really old Japanese obachan, that grabbed me - and whispered creepily - "Stekki!" ... and you think the Japanese are shy!

    >>4857040

Comiket was a great first outing for me. They have a bit of English Speaking staff (its all volunteer staff anyway) ... there are some rules. You MUST change your costume at the event - so you have to arrive in plain clothes and leave in plain clothes. There's a small (8$) fee to cosplay. And you have to check any dangerous looking props with the staff...

All that aside though, I found it to be a pretty easy thing to do. The only japanese you'll really need is "May I take your picture" and "Let's take our pictures together"... which shouldn't be too hard to learn at all - and hey, if you make your debut in Comiket, let me know - I'll come out and do what I can to make it easier for you!

Thanks OP! I always make my own stuff because I feel more accomplished that way. I had just heard that it was much more common practice in Japan to buy your cosplay I am happy to now be set straight!

Another silly question if you don't mind. I have heard about the costume changing rooms but also that cosplay is is kind of cordoned off to a specific area and if you want to go elsewhere you should change out of cosplay?

    This is true and untrue.

Yes, there is a cordoned off cosplay area. That's where all these pictures are from - its the only area where you may take pictures of any kind at Comiket. It's also the only time you can display any extra props... like guns or whatever.

I walked around the comic-selling area in costume, as did MANY people, and there was no problem at all - in fact I got a lot of great compliments from some of the vendors inside.

I was disappointed that I couldn't find any Lupin doujin... because I really wanted to buy some in costume, to see their reaction!

aw OP that's so nice of you. <3 How would I contact you? You planning on going next year?

I actually have some more questions if you don't mind me asking!
For the changing rooms, is it just one big room or is it fitting room style 'stalls'?

How long are you allowed to spend in there? Are you allowed to keep your wig on after you've changed out, or allowed to arrive in your wig?

And looks like its common to carry around little luggage bags? Do you carry them around all day, or can you put them somewhere (like a coat check?)
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)20:16 No.4858451
    >>4858417
Well..... I'll put up some pics on a site later, and I'll link the site - my contact will be up there. I dont put my contact stuff up on 4chan.

And the changing room... well, its just a big ass open room. Of course its walled from the outside for privacy, but once inside its a meat-market. No stalls or whatever.

Yeah, you should put on your wig in the changing room. They are pretty strict about arriving in costume.

Some people had little luggage tote things, and there were lockers and a coat room area - but that's not free, and you can imagine it fills up fast... so best to get there early if your costume is elaborate.

I just had a shoulder bag for my clothes, but my costume was super simple.

I didnt hear of any time limit on the changing room itself - I only took like 5 minutes to change though. There were many people with elaborate makeup and costumes that were there for a very long time.

You can bring a friend in to help you change (same sex of course) but they have to pay the cosplay fee too to get into the changing room.
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)20:18 No.4858461

Well, I wasn't incredibly interested in that part... I was focused on trying to pose with the cutest or most popular characters around in an effort to find out what made their costumes good or why they were popular (and hope that something would rub off).

Also, of course there's no cameras in the dressing room.

Some of the "Girls" in the pics above may very well be men. I'm going to Cospic this october, maybe I can get you some crossplay stuff then.

Thanks OP! This info is all very helpful. I've never had to change at a con before so I wasn't sure how to imagine it.

About how big would you say Comiket is? In terms of literally size of the venue and amount of attendees?
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)20:41 No.4858542
    >>4858498
I'd say its the single biggest event in Japan. 3 days and over 500,000 people breeze through there. Biggest event I've ever been too.

The venue is "Tokyo Big Sight" ... and a simple google search on that should show you how big that is. But the cosplay section is outside, in a small garden-esque area that's cordoned off.

The big draw is the comics... as you would expect... but the cosplay area is not dead at all, its buzzing with cosplayers and avid photographers (with a 1 to 15 ratio or so of cosplayers to cameras).

Well, they were more just excited to see foreigners who were into their subculture. Believe it or not, Cosplay isn't as widely accepted here as you might think - and to find others who are into the scene is really exciting for them.

But yeah... they thought I was hot stuff, and I agree.. I'm a pretty attractive guy, lol.
