I would say #3 but I'm a girl and most of the series I watch have at least 1 female character I can fit; if not, #2 because I would be a terrible crossplayer.

I really like K-ON. However, being male, it doesn't leave...any characters open for me to cosplay normally.
That won't stop me though.
I'll either get a group of my friends to do a Rule 63 version, or I'll just go for it anyway and be manly Yui.

What really makes or breaks Rule 63 cosplay is a good prop. People might see your costume and not be entirely sure of your character. But once they see Giitah, they'll KNOW you're Man-Yui.

Why are there so few male characters that seem worth cosplaying , that in addition haven't been done to death already?

Ideally, I'd try to do a rule 63, but i just don't know if I could pull one off.

Just stay away from the slice of life series and you'll find plenty of awesome male characters. Meanwhile video games are dominated by male characters.

No. 6 is pretty good and has two male characters. Just try and filter the homolust, the story's quite good.

AnoHana has Jinta, Yukiatsu, and Poppo, which you can pick and choose which body type you fit best.

Steins;gate is a great series but you're a bit limited to Mr. Braun, Okarina, or Daru. Better than nothing.

Sengoku Basara is full of manly men doing manly things.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is good, you don't have to do the usual Simon or Kamina cosplay, Kittan or Viral are pretty underappreciated!

My boyfriend's having this problem right now. We're doing an MLP group and he really wants to be Rainbow Dash, but seems to be tottering on the fence between crossplaying or rule 63-ing it. We're doing the Gala dresses, though, so if he does go for it, he might end up crossplaying.

Rainbow Dash is probably one of the easier of the ponies to make a rule 63 version. A friend wants me to draw her boyfriend a Twilight Sparkle. She wanted some more fashionistic look, he's kind of "nope" about it, and wants to do a more wizard or scholar look.

Normally I cosplay a girl from series I like, even if the boys are my favourite characters.

The only series I can think of that I love and has no girls is One Outs, and I've pretty much resigned to just saving photos of other cosplayers for that.
I'm far too girly to pull off a crossplay of a professional baseballer, and I'm not confident about rule 63ing it.
(Maybe I'll try to design a Lyacons' cheerleader outfit or something)

The hardest part of Bayonetta is that there are not a lot of humanoid characters in general. There are male characters but that have super distinct bodies and faces.

Also you can TOTALLY cosplay from Minami-Ke while it does mainly focus on the girls you can be one of the GARest volleyball/cooking fans that ever graced an anime series.
