As a person who dates both genders, my best friend likes to play on the side of me that dates women.
So if she calls me a fag, I know she's joking around.
However, some gay people do use fag in it's negative connotation. However, instead of it being "Gay fag" it means you are the worst kind've gay person and a disgrace on the homosexual community.

It's kind've like if a girl calls another girl a total cunt/slut/slag/etc. It's one of things where unless you know the person, and they know you, and you're good buddies, it's not okay.

I always thought 'fag' and 'faggot' just sounded plain rude. I mean, who cares what the intended feeling was behind it, you're still labeling someone. I mean, it's like saying. 'Oh yeah, that gay guy is nice.' Instead of, 'Oh yeah, that guy is nice.'

I just hate labels I guess and I think they're retarded.

Speaking from experience, I don't like being called a fag and neither do any other gay people I know. I mean, they don't really care if they're called a fag if it's in a joking manner but they don't necessarily say 'Hey, it's totes cool if you call me a fag!'.

In private company with specific friends we sometimes call each other "faget" or "fgt" online as a term of endearment. I'd never use those in mixed company, though; I recognize that it's generally considered offensive and I have enough courtesy to be aware of the way words will impact others before using them carelessly.

I differentiate gays and faggots. Gays are people who are homosexual but can be decent people who don't deserve being mistreated. Faggots are gays that are extremely obnoxious.
On the Internet, it has become the new 'asshole' so me and my friends online use it in that context. We have a gay friend who, while knowing it has a different context with us, is uncomfortable with it so we try to tone it down for his sake.
