It's been a bit since we had one of these and they are always entertaining, so let's share new material for the lulz.

My contribution is as follows (pic related). Do you ever see posters who just "don't get it" and keep asking the same question over and over? This chick has made multiple threads about mooching friends and how they treat borrowed property or costumes she made for them horribly and what to do, yet is still friends with them (I imagine) as she is essentially rephrasing her original post again. Why does she not kick this moocher's ass to the curb and be done with it?!
    >> Anonymous 08/13/11(Sat)22:00 No.4845543
Going off OPs thing, probs all the threads that start out with "What do you think of cosplayers who...."

Cuz discussing them weekly and getting nowhere when another newbie has a unique question/discussion poiint no one has ever thought of asking is good times.
    >> Anonymous 08/14/11(Sun)08:20 No.4847055
I like how she hides it as offering advice when making it glaringly obvious she is being mooched off and wants advice herself.

    >>4847055
Yea, it looks like she was trying to be sneaky, but it is really obvious what she's doing if you had seen her previous threads. LOL

I still find the fact she's head over heels for Homestuck after hating on it for so long very hypocritical. But it was pretty obvious that's how it was going to turn out from the start, so~

It's exactly the same with lolita. Plenty of helpful, well-dressed, popular girls visit here but it's still apparently a hive of scum and villainy where only ugly mean jealous bitches go to shit on everyone better than them. Okay.
I think those people referring to 4chan as some kind of evil place have never actually been here, or have only seen /b/ on a bad day. The ones that actually do check it out properly tend to stick around. 4chan is addictive.

Half of the time, cgl is 100x better than coscom when it comes to asking questions and getting feedback. In my experience, if I ask a question on coscom it either gets ignored or I end up with advice from people who don't know their shit. At least here, people come out with some great advice and ideas and there's always someone with examples or a tutorial. It's just that people don't take any shit here and are quick to call you out.
And that's so true. I was the same a couple of months ago - I'd only ever been on /b/, saw a few less than pleasant threads and was like "shit, that place is horrible". Now I come here all the time. No regrets.

It's a miracle. And Ciel's young outfit(s) (The one you see when the mansion's burning, as well as the one when Madam Red visits for the first time) look easy enough to pull together on a budget. This so hard. /cgl/ is a lot faster and more helpful when it comes to construction ideas as long as you've done some preliminary digging around/googling if at all possible. I made a thread a few months ago about magnets and their uses for costumes and got some amazing feedback, ideas, and people posted bitchin images of their projects with magnets. I never would be able to get that kind of response on coscom because people there typically suggest hotglue for most projects. There are a handful of helpful and knowledgeable people but unfortunately, the retards tend to reply to threads first with "HURDURR I DUNNO". I also think the quality of responses here can he higher because most people are anon and/or there is no post counting.

I've never figured out why newbies on coscom want to get high post counts, it's not like Admin will ever recognize their contributions to the site and promote them or anything of that sort and if all they are doing is posting reaction images or stupid 1-liners, people tend to stop reading and lose respect (if there was any to begin with).

Or they can just fill up the threads talking amongst themselves. Which would lead to in fighting, derailed/ dead threads, or (everyone's favorite) tripfag circlejerking. Either way I win. I come here mainly for the lolz.

The useful threads die fast, Like the wig general threads we try to have. Yeah sure we have good ones, but we also have like 5 threads with two replies before we get a good one. Same goes for many general threads. In fact most helpful threads are the same 5 people trying to help, and even then never get the same amount of replies as the drama/pretty pics/ con review/weeaboo stories/ etc threads.

Seriously half the time the front page, and a substantial amount of the larger threads that keep getting bumped are completely off topic threads/ not the help you guys are lavishing on about.

Don't get me wrong, /cgl/ can post some helpful stuff, but you guys are sugar coating the fuck out of this place atm.

when some one asks a question here or a specific help thing, it doesnt get 50+ replys, generally like 10, sometimes more. They answer the posters question, help them get things figured out then move on. Thats what I at least think of when I think of /cgl/ as helpful.

The tutorial threads are always nice, and even the drama threads die out. And I'm willing to bet its the same people in those threads every time too.

Which is why they aren't on the front page. Because people know how to ask specific questions here and give knowledgeable answers.
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)01:03 No.4854608
    >>4854580
I see way more of the they ask for help and then don't get it, then the 10 replies and got what they needed scenarios. That's what I mean by not as helpful as this thread is making /cgl/ out to be.

My point about the off topic threads vs tutorial/helpful thread post count is that most anons end up feeding those then the "could I please have some help here" threads (which leads to the above scenario). And I'm not even counting "Who should I cosplay" in the helpful threads category.

I have 2 legitimate reasons for throwing creeper status at him.

    1) As a convention photographer you try and be as unbiased as possible while trying to take as many pictures of GOOD costumes as you can. We all know and can agree that there are men out there with amazing costumes. Now when you go through one of his albums you never see more than 2 photographs of a male in costume. Any woman bearing some skin? At least 5. This blatant sexist bias is what bothers me, maybe I'm just being butthurt because

    2) at AUSA 2009, he told me on the cosplay.com forum that he wanted a picture of my Welkin Gunther costume. I was the only Welkin at AUSA. I walked by him in costume numerous times. We made eye contact on several occasions. Again, maybe I'm just butthurt but it's hard to dispute what's obvious.
    >> Kenmichi !!lT9Ulp8FHEs 08/16/11(Tue)17:58 No.4858029
Okay so reason 2 is not so legitimate for calling him a creeper, but reason 1 is pretty valid.

It's not /that/ he takes photographs of hot chicks in cosplay, it's that he only does.

He is biased towards women, yeah, but it's not really like it's his job to take pictures of everyone. I don't go to cons and take pictures of everyone, just of things I like. Anymore he really only takes pictures of his friends/acquaintances anyway. That's why you see his galleries on ACP just being 50 pictures of one or two chicks instead of a lot of con shots.

This is probably due in part to so many people saying he's a creeper, so I can't blame him.

I also love how her post mentions 4chan mentality. Someone else pointed out that it's an internet phenomenon, which I feel is more correct.

Was she not aware that anyone wanting to troll can make an account with any silly name they want and still be "anonymous"? Proud Asian has proven how damn easy it is to just keep making new accounts. Who's to say an angry coscom person can't go and make a trolling account just to be an ass? Oh, that's nice of you guys to say, thank you!

The face makeup is somewhat of a requirement, (I have really difficult acne and blotchy skin, oh teenage years..) so that part is heavy, more so then preferable, but it looks better then ance everywhere. (Or at least I feel it does.)

As for the eye makeup, perhaps I should tone it down a bit. I haven't done nearly as much in the past, this was the first time I went "all out" with it, which I admit might have been a mistake. (Though I did had fun with it!) I'll play around with it a bit before NYAF and try to find a happy [less creepy] medium.

Don't have to act on it, but you'll notice and form an opinion. Whether you voice it or not is different, but people will be affected by seeing it. When the big person draws attention to themselves by being loud and obnoxious, no, it's not like a chair or the escalator. It's like a fog horn or neon bright lights.

I think that's what's getting them all in a craze. Just because someone doesn't agree, they think automatically they will go up and bash the person to their face. Most of the time it isn't the case, but they will definitely voice something in their own head.

Whoa, slow your roll man. The discussion is on "big" cosplayers. There are plenty of other ones that bring attention to themselves, never said there wasn't. I do have a few examples in my mind of the overweight and skimpy clothes. That bothers me a bit, especially when they draw extra attention to themselves. Same with the yaoi-only fangirls, teens who can't understand common courtesy, the list goes on and on. If bigger people dress in things that flatter their body, as (pay attention to this part) well as ANYONE ELSE WHO COSPLAYS, I'll probably notice but it'll be with a positive light.

I do wonder why you felt the need to expand the scope of things that bothered you to such a degree. The thread is titled "overweight cosplayers", and you do discuss having a bad reaction to them, but you also list things like bad makeup, wardrobe mishaps, and wig problems.

These things are transient issues. They can be remedied quickly, and fairly easily, and are suitable things to be bothered by simply because they CAN be fixed easily and have not been. Weight is not in the same category of issues. Why muddy your point? Are you presenting all of these as the same kind of aesthetic problem through carelessness, or as an attempt to downplay the distastefulness of your statement?

Let me try to sum it up as much as possible: It takes a few seconds to look in the mirror and deem yourself presentable. As I said before, someone cosplays to flatter their body and takes care in their prep time before going out that door, awesome. Doesn't matter the body type.

The topic was on "big" cosplayers, so I tried to stick to it, but I also offered examples of it being more than just that. For god's sake, my fiancee is a plus-sized person. I don't give a crap, but be respectable to yourself.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)04:15 No.4860493
I like how there's someone in this topic so staunchly defending fat people.

You are aware that 90% of horror stories involved hambeasts, correct? Not to mention if they don't dress in a way that flatters them they tend to take the whole cake in horrible appearance (Lack of makeup, bad wigs, body odor problems etc). They're more noticeable because of that.

Don't try and lie and say they aren't. You're more likely to look at a fatgirl squeezing herself into a Faye costume and think to yourself "Damn, gurl that shit ain't cute" than "Awww, she's having fun, good for you". And if you claim you do, you're lying.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)04:16 No.4860495
    >>4860460
There's no need to sum up; I've read what you've said.

Unfortunately, you're still talking about two different things. Tugging a wig down takes a few seconds. Developing the skills to tailor a flattering costume for a larger size, especially when most patterns are not accurately drafted to a plus-size body shape, takes longer than that. Learning to dress a larger body in a beautiful way, when the character to mimic is smaller and wearing a costume that flatters a smaller shape, is a subtle art that also takes time to learn.

I say this so you can understand more clearly my objection. "Being respectable to yourself" is not nearly as trivial an undertaking as you're presenting it, and you're undervaluing the skill and effort of the people who do it. Like your fiancee, presumably. That's not fair to her.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)04:25 No.4860505
    >>4860495

My fiancee can alter patterns like no one's business, and she isn't even a sewer. There are alternatives and one is to ask for help. Some characters even have different outfits to choose from.

Surprisingly, on coscom no less, a girl wanted to do a mid-drift showing costume, but was big. She asked for ways to alter it to make it flattering.

On the flip side, I've used bigger patterns and altered them to be smaller for me.

I think you're playing it up really. Sorry, but I really do.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)04:51 No.4860534
    >>4860505
Are you still honestly convinced that the steps you just described are as simple as pulling a wig back down? They're not. They're multi-step procedures, requiring knowledge and creativity.

The problem, ultimately, is not whether altering a pattern or pulling down a wig is more difficult. I think that answer is pretty obvious.

It's that the cries of "make the costume flattering!" "just make it fit you well!" and so on, are conveniently ignoring the concurrent demand of extra effort and skill. As I mentioned, most character designs are not designed to flatter big women. Not just skimpy costumes, ALL costumes, or nearly so. Most clothing patterns are not drafted to deal with the widely varying shapes of larger women. What you're asking, and what everyone who insists that all you need to do is make it flattering is asking, is that the larger woman be more discerning and more skilled than a smaller woman working with the same source material.

Your fiancee has this skill, I'm sure. She and the other larger cosplayers who deal capably with the same issues deserve your acknowledgement that they've developed it. But this skill is something to learn in addition to the rest of those needed for cosplay, and those are plenty. Is it right to assume that they MUST do more?

No, because it's not all costumes. I've seen a Witch Hunter Robin costume look good on a plus sized girl and she just made it to look like the outfit in the series.

Effort is shown in a costume, no matter how you are to make it.

You keep talking about "pulling a wig down". I think you majorly misunderstood me on that. I didn't mean hairline showing, but bad spiking/ponytails/what have you.

Perhaps I may be undermining the changes, but in my eyes, you're also way overestimating the skill level required. Some of these people make clothes for themselves for everyday use, would a costume adjustment really be that difficult? Keep in mind you are talking to a person who is tiny on top but big on the bottom.

At this point, this is going in circles.

I'm fairly sure that you're saying someone who is good at sewing will be good at sewing, and well...can't argue with that.

I'm low-plus sized and rather odd-shaped myself, and I've sewn for friends much plusser than me. When I talk about the skill needed to adjust a pattern for a beautiful fit, I'll trust you to trust me that I'm not blowing smoke; I want my garments to be comfortable and lovely, tailoring can be a motherfucker, and when patterns simply don't exist for the size you need, or for certain parts and not others, "make it flattering" is a bigger fuss than you might guess.

For you, for your lady, perhaps not. For lots of people, oh yes. It's a hurdle right out of the starting block that not everybody can clear.

Tooone down the white eyeliner. It is SO distracting and looks tacky as hell. Put a touch of it on your lower waterline, and use a little white eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eyes. Any more than that is just excessive.

I do have to agree that you are very cute. Just...please, tone down that white.

    >This so hard. /cgl/ is a lot faster and more helpful when it comes to construction ideas

then I stopped reading. /cgl/'s delusions of grandeur are starting to worry me. all I see here is shit and bad, really bad advice. the only useful tutorials I see are stolen from DA or cosplayers sites.

Really? All the advice I've ever gotten here has been good. The shit advice I usually ended up with at coscom.

    LOLOLOLOLOL JUST HOT GLUE IT.

I'm convinced half the people there giving "advice" aren't even cosplayers.

True story, I asked about make up and wigs in coscom and my thread got ignored. Same questions were asked on /cgl/ and I had at least 10 good replies.

    I have to agree.

Anytime I want advice on something, I always come to /cgl/ first. As bad a rep people give /cgl/ and the shit tier drama, there's a lot of help to be found. I haven't asked questions on coscom in ages. I don't even have to anymore. I usually get an answer from /cgl/. Wigs, makeup, stores, props, usually /cgl/ has decent answers.

Isn't that the case with every cosplayer though? Not just plus sized but everyone. They have to construct the costume to be comfortable/look good to fit their own body.

I have no idea, I gave her a reply though... honestly I think we were all expecting a shit storm. What we got was pretty calm with some debating. It's defiantly not to the level of anger I expected from coscom, and I figured out just how many coscomers come here.

    I read it like this:
She brought up a point already mentioned in this thread; you guys are coming off on the Coscom thread like 4chan is a misunderstood site and that it's really awesome when it's not. You guys really are petty, jealous bitches for the most part. But then so is Coscom, which goes to the second point she made, which is that Coscom is a shitty place to try to convince people that /cgl isn't as bad as people assume it is. Did I miss something in what she said?
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)19:02 No.4862372
    >>4862344
I read it like she was saying that everyone on coscom hate's /cgl/
"This site's demographic will most likely not be amenable to any concepts which feature the idea that /cgl is in truth not the cesspool of inhuman ideology that many perceive it to be. Whatever that truth, it has little relevance in such an argument among the denizens of this forum."

to me it sounds like no matter what we say, she believes everyone on coscom wont believe us we shouldnt be wasting our time.

What I'm saying is Cosplay.com is full of childish little shits that wont listen to anything you try to tell them. If you were from CGL and you told them the sky was blue, they'd argue that it was florescent pink. Thank you for bringing me out of like 8 months of not posting only to be completely misunderstood. But, that's nothing new. Everyone will always take things said on Cosplay.com into the most negative place and change their meanings completely, it's the story of my fucking life on that site. CGL and Cosplay.com are exactly the same, Cosplay.com just has more people.

Oh woops, sorry I misunderstood you then in my reply. I still think their being more agreeable than first imagined, but you speak truth. Some of them are never going to hear the words any different. And granted, that thread is full of mostly /cgl/ folk.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)20:07 No.4862642
All in all, the thread has been pretty tame compared to the meltdown I was anticipating. Maybe all the children of coscom have gone to bed early 2 days in a row.
    >> Anonymous 08/17/11(Wed)21:52 No.4863125
    >>4862642

Having read the whole coscom thread it's probably because:

    1) It's mainly a 4chan circlejerk where everyone is a name/tripfag because no anon/ only 4channers mainly posting.

    2) Most people know it is a troll bait thread.

    3) It's not in the General Cosplay chat section.

And I'm ok with that. I'm proud people didn't go for the bait (but now that I said something more people will post in it)

But if you wanna drama and people falling for it might I suggest the General Cosplay board not the General Off Topic next time. I've seen a thread explode cause someone mentioned 4chan there. Also don't be so obvious. Don't put 4chan in the name of the thread. Gotta start off discrete, or you won't get the maximum fun.

Come on guys. I know you know how to troll better than this.

Also lol at both of these threads.
