    Hey there /cgl/! My friend and I were thinking of dressing up as two of the villager NPCs from Professor Layton and the Curious Village at a con and carrying around a large laminated printout with a puzzle on it, like the one shown. If people can come up and solve the puzzle with a dry-erase marker, we would give them some chocolate coins (picarats).

    Is this breaking any convention rules? Do you think we'd get in trouble? We'd really like to be these characters but we don't think anyone would recognize us if we didn't give people puzzles to do.

    Rules for the con say: "Signs (hand made and pickets) used for soliciting are not allowed.
    Examples: Free Hugs, Glomp Me, Friendly Advice, $1.00, etc."

    Which villagers are you going to be, OP? Some are more recognizable than others and you may get away without a sign.

    It depends on most cons but I think signs are allowed if they don't take too much space and is actually part of the costume. You can do a quick email and ask. Never hurts

    Also, OP, I think it's an awesome idea, and it's very plainly not the same thing as a "sign for solicitation". Could you perhaps contact one of the con organisers and ask if they'd have a problem with it?

    fuck that puzzle. even with a walkthrough i never found the god damn star.

    also i wish i thought of this. pure genius. i think it would be fun to let people solve the puzzles with whiteboard markers, assuming you laminate.

    no, actually. i finished it without a walkthrough, i broke out the instructions to help me with the last few puzzles i couldnt finish.

    this one never got finished. i dont know why, im actually quite good at puzzles, this one just.. ugh.

    Good luck. My friends got penalized last year for signs that were actually part of their costumes. Like, they were attached to their costumes and were speech bubbles with obvious quotes from the game they were cosplaying from.
