Probably because the last BL that got a lot of popularity enough to be really recognized at conventions was Gravitation and Loveless and they're years old now. It's just easier for them to cosplay non-BL pairings and get attention from other fans than it is to work on a costume that will be a hit or miss. I suppose Lucky Dogs is some what known over here...I've never even played it but I'd know the jail uniforms. Anyway...

I'd actually like to see some theme BL cosplays. Totally original creations but something you can tell is supposed to be a couple, like maybe a pair of element demons or something. Thought it would be kinda cute to do a wolf/sheep crossplay with my girlfriend. I've got a white wig that I've been dying to use.

There's nice stuff out there, but it usually involves around average day people.
Maybe it lacks appeal to cosplay because it isn't "flashy" enough. Whereas loveless and gravitation were quite distinct in character designs.

The fanservice is there. It's subtle, but there. Even in the manga, the pairing is suggested, but not canon. Kuroshitsuji was originally mean to be a shotacon manga; some of Yana's former works were shota, so it's not that much of a surprise. I'm not saying I agree with the crappy cosplayer pictures or behavior, but it's not completely out of nowhere.

There is actually some poses you can do that imply you ship them without looking tacky. To everyone else it may just look friendly (unless they're rivals/enemies). My favorite to do when I'm cosplaying with my girlfriend is we stand back to back with our arms linked or we'll sling our arms over each other's shoulders and make peace signs at the camera or do something silly like poke each other's cheeks. It's just really fun to creative new poses that are a little fanservicey without being all "SEXYTIEMS NAO LET US HUMP AND SUCK FACE FOREVA!!" and the pictures even though they're fanservicey are still casual enough to be posted around without anyone being ashamed to see it.

Oh god have you ever even looked at Harry Potter or Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom? The HP ones fucking REWROTE at least one of the books and harassed and threatened JKR about making Harry boink Hermione rather than Ginny. I'm not even in these fandoms and I can't escape the crazy.

Then again, maybe it's different because it's not anime. In my experience, slashers in Western fandoms tend to keep to themselves more while the het shippers go nuts. I guess yaoi is more 'acceptable' in anime fandom, or something. And real people/book characters just aren't kawaii bishounen enough.
