Why do you lolitas wear lolita?

Don't you realize everyone thinks it looks stupid? Don't you realize it's not attractive?

Not trolling. I'm being serious. What is it about lolita that you covet so much? Nobody in society or even weeaboo fans of Japanese culture think this crap looks good. Only other lolitas like the look of lolita.

I understand wanting to be different, but don't you want to embrace another fashion that would actually make you look good in the eyes of others? Is it because you are ugly and self-conscious and believe wigs and crazy dresses will hide your appearance? Are you just trying to copy Japanese people?

    I just don't get it.

(*well, and the people who are just fans of lolita, you don't have to dress in it to like it.)

    >Why do you lolitas wear lolita?

    >Don't you realize everyone thinks it looks stupid?
i don't particularly care what other people think of what i'm wearing. i don't dress myself to be attractive to others.
    >Don't you realize it's not attractive?
says who? you? are you the one wearing it? no? i am? well i think it's attractive.

    >What is it about lolita that you covet so much?
    just like the fashion

    >Nobody in society or even weeaboo fans of Japanese culture think this crap looks good. Only other lolitas like the look of lolita.
then why do i get compliments every time i wear Lolita out?

    >I understand wanting to be different
it's not about that, at all.

    >but don't you want to embrace another fashion that would actually make you look good in the eyes of others?
i all ready said that i don't care what others think of me, it's sad that you do.

    >Is it because you are ugly and self-conscious and believe wigs and crazy dresses will hide your appearance?
lol no. people who feel really ugly would never dress up so flashy and bring so much attention to themselves. they'd hide in the plainest of plain clothes.

    >Are you just trying to copy Japanese people?
no, i'm not really in Japanese things outside of Lolita and j-rawk

    >Only other lolitas like the look of lolita.

That's not true. There are people outside of lolita who enjoy or admire the fashion. For example, while my boyfriend doesn't think lolita is "sexy" he thinks I look beautiful in it, and frequently tells me so.

I'll only speak for myself, but I'm wearing it because I feel beautiful in it.

    Listen.

People dress this way because it makes them feel good. Most women dress to attract the male gaze. Lolita isn't about that. It's about expressing yourself. That's why a lot of us couldn't care less what others think because we're tired of always having to dress for those outside of ourselves.
    >> Anonymous 08/09/11(Tue)16:09 No.4828635
One day you'll learn that not everyone has shit-tier self confidence and doesn't wake up every morning to think "hmm, what can I do to make sure everyone likes me today?"
Some people's lives don't revolve around being accepted by others. Oddly enough, it's these people who aren't inhibited by confidence issues and openly show their true self to the outside world that get the most friends and admirers. Even if a man doesn't necessarily find Lolita itself attractive, there are plenty who admire a woman's courage to wear what she wants. If a girl likes pink and ruffles, why stop her? Why can't her skirt be poofy instead of skin tight, why does she need to only wear clothes that you like? Why does it matter to you?
To be honest, people who beg for acceptance are the ones who usually come off as unattractive.

during one con, i went to peek into the Lolita on a Dime panel. it was all about how to go about dressing in the style without draining your wallet. at one point, the lady leading the panel asked "okay, so who here can answer our first question - what is lolita all about?"

a girl raised her hand and said "bringing beauty and decorum in a rotten and jaded world?"

which is kind of what it is, actually. lolita is cute, and feminine, and innocent. to people who like lolita, that is what is so appealing to them. girls who wear lolita always, to me, look like the dolls i used to play with when i was a kid, and in the best way possible. i like the look, even though i wouldn't wear it myself, and personally i find it more appropriate to wear lolita dresses than some of the more revealing clothes you can find girls wearing nowadays. but that last bit is just my opinion.

Because we find it beautiful. We don't dress any way to please other people, a lot of us are SICK and TIRED of society acting like everyone exists for the sole purpose of making everyone else feel "comfortable". We dress how we dress to make OURSELVES happy, haters are gonna hate and no matter how hard those people hate us, we are who we are! We like what we like! A lot of us hate the way the majority of our society dresses and we find it to be UGLY! Just because you don't like something on or about someone else doesn't mean that person should have to change! Clothing is a harmless fascination, a harmless lifestyle, a harmless past time. If you don't like it, gtfo, chances are we don't like how you dress either.

Fuck you OP, I'm an ordinary guy and I love girls who wear lolita unless it's completely ridiculous with cake hats and baby toy decorations etc. I like it because so many women these days refuse to dress like women and when they do it looks extremely slutty. Lolitas aren't trying to be sexy and they don't reveal skin so that's why I find it kind of sexy. I fucking girls' fashion, they all wear leggings(leggings are NOT cute no matter what you or your friends think) or jeans. There's no femininity so I don't think I should treat them as fine ladies. Frills, skirts and dresses that cover enough skin and stockings & pantyhose are awesome.

Maybe classic lolita is 'lady like' but the most popular lolita is sweet lolita, which revolves around cute shit like unicorns and cupcakes and candy, with little girl shoes and bows.

That is not even a little bit 'lady like' or feminine, its just childish.

I, personally love lolita, but whenever someone calls it 'lady like' or 'feminine' or even 'how women should dress' i just facepalm so goddamn hard. lolita is cute, little girl shit. Not grown ass woman shit. just look at the popular prints.

    >Why do you lolitas wear lolita?
    Because we like it.

    >Don't you realize everyone thinks it looks stupid?
Actually I get tons of comments from strangers saying how much they love my outfits and how great I look. I can honestly say that the majority of the time when I go out in lolita for more than an an hour or so, at least one person will stop either me or what they are doing to tell me they love my outfit or think I look cute. How many times a day do people stop you to tell you that they love your style? As for the few dirty looks I get from usually ghetto fabulous middle school girls, I don't give a fuck. Why should I?

    >Don't you realize it's not attractive?
See above answer. Besides, who the fuck cares? Everyone thinks something is not "attractive" but that doesn't mean we need to shield the general public from overweight people, people with bad skin, people with lazy eyes, people who are too bony, etc.

    >Not trolling. I'm being serious. What is it about lolita that you covet so much?
I don't think covet means what you think it means.

    >Nobody in society or even weeaboo fans of Japanese culture think this crap looks good. Only other lolitas like the look of lolita.
    Again, see above answers.

    >I understand wanting to be different, but don't you want to embrace another fashion that would actually make you look good in the eyes of others?
See above answers, yet again. Because why the fuck should I care about "looking good in the eyes of others" if I wanted to do that I would get breast implants and wear really low shirts. Everyone thinks something is ugly, so pretty much whatever fashion I choose I am sure would make people offended. If I wanted to go about my days in haute couture designer clothes I am sure people would be offended just because I spent so much on money. Can't please everyone, so why try?

    >Is it because you are ugly and self-conscious and believe wigs and crazy dresses will hide your appearance?

    >Are you just trying to copy Japanese people?

well in all style circles, there are people who only dress that way for the fashion. but for many others, it's about expressing yourself. that, and being happy with how you look.

don't be discouraged just because some people are 'ruining' lolita for you. if you really like lolita, like how it makes you look, the beauty and formality of it, how creativity comes into play, etc, then go ahead and be a lolita. just be happy with yourself, is what i'm trying to say, i guess.

Lolita isn't about being attractive. It's about exhibiting the inner ego of most women to be a princess. It's the reason 6 year old girls want to wear their snow white halloween costumes around the house every day. They're trying to live out a personal fantasy of being beautiful and lavish.

The primary goal is much the same as the goal of cosplay: not to be attractive, but to win the admiration and approval of those that share their interest.

I'm not a Lolita but can't say it doesn't interest me. I'm a female tomboy type but look at loli fashion because someday I'd like to grow the balls required to wear dresses like these. Seriously I think it takes guts because I don't have the guts to wear loli. If I did, I'd be more on the goth loli elegance side. You don't have to wear pink and pastels and I've seen somewhat cleancut no-frills loli designs that rock.

    Brolita here,
Just saying that Lolita isn't a fashion strictly limited to girls only.
Its just like any other trend or wear of apparel.
Some people like it and others could go on living without it.
Think of your questions thoroughly and see if you can answer them yourself before saying something so blatant.

I love lolita fashion simply because of things like this thread.
People are always going to criticize subcultures and the fashions that go with them. If people don't understand something they are often afraid of it, and then spend their time questioning or insulting it.
But the thought of anyone being threatened by women dressed in head to toe pink bows and ruffles for instance, makes me smile every time. I hope those be-ruffled, bow-headed lolitas continue going out and startling people with their unabashed girlishness. :)

My exboyfriend wasn't into lolita at all, didn't even know about it until he met me and he thought it was adorable, we had sex in one of my dresses one day because I thought I was just too cute to keep his hands off of in it.

And my current love interest, he's the last guy you'd think would like lolita! He's a tattoo artist/piercer and as such is covered in both tattoos and piercings from head to toe. The day I met him, I was in lolita and the next day when we were talking (I was hanging out at the shop with my bestfriend who is a tattoo artist there because I was staying with her all weekend) he admitted that he thought my lolita stuff was sexy. This tickled me quite a bit and I've shown him a few of my other outfits and he likes them all so far.

I think what it comes down to is how creative or uncreative the guy is. If the guy is creative then chances are he will like lolita or at least be more accepting of it. My ex was a musician, played bass in a really good band, and like I said this new guy is a tattoo artist so as fellow artsy people they understand the creativity behind it whereas normalfags just see crazy. Which is also what they see when they look at rock stars and people with lots of tattoos. : /

People do things to make themselves happy, some people don't have the confidence to do things like that. And it pisses them off, or they just wanna break down that confidence that a person has built. There are man reasons why a person can be mean to another. Lolita is not feminine at all. It is like the opposite of feminine. It is childish and crude. It obstructs the womanly, feminine figure and renders it into a cumbersome mass of boorish bows, ruffles and unflattering pastels, the likes of which might have been dreamed up by a spoilt 5 year old pageant girl. People don't see the elegant, uber feminine lady that you see when you look in the mirror. They see a woman child with the peter pan sydrome and horrible taste, worthy of pity and disdain.

I wear lolita because I like how it looks. My bf likes it, my friends like it, and sometimes even some of the strangers on the street like it. "Normal" clothing is too plain and boring to me, and looking like everybody else won't make you look attractive. Attractiveness is something that makes you special above others. This. My mom belongs to a snark forum for a soap opera and she and I love to sit back and watch people get pissed off at each other because someone called their favorite character a slut.

The forum mostly consists of men and women in the 40 to 50 range but it still gets pretty intense. One lady conducted a crusade against another because of something she said. She found the other woman's facebook and spammed the community with pictures of her that she had (poorly) doctored in MS paint. She said all this really harsh things about the woman all because of a disagreement.

Oh I see, because you think feminine is about showing your body. Femininity isn't just about physical appearances, which lolita is trying to show. It's more about the female spirit than anything else. To say "we are women and we don't adhere to your modern concepts of beauty, we adhere to our own".

It's weird but…. Women basically exist solely to please men.

Everything they do, starting from about the age of 14 or 15, is designed to please us: Makeup, flattering dresses, skirts, blouses. Stuff like jewellery and the masses and masses of skincare creams and other 'anti-ageing' products. Even nerdy shit like lolita they do to please us, wearing progressively more revealing outfits in the hope of elliciting male attention. Tattoos and piercings as well.

Women will even get 'surgery' done on their pussies to make them look nicer for us. They'll enlarge their tits, they'll do this all knowing the risks of such things, but doing it anyway.

    Women exist to please men.

Sexually they _love_ to serve. Women are insanely submissive sexually, just alpha male, patriarchal-esque 'order' to them to do something is enough to get them turned on. And when they're turned on they'll do anything for you, and let you do anything to them. They'll beg for you to degrade them and humiliate them in ways you've never imagined.

    Women exist to please men.

So please femanons. Remember to be good little girls and serve your men well. Because really, deep down, that's all you want in life.

Um, because the only 3 photos you had posted when I typed up my response was a cheap painting of a cheesecake pinup girl selling cigarettes, a burlesque dancer, and a photo of a woman stripping.

Since then you have posted a saucy lady from the 40s pouting for the camera, a runway model, and an over-processed fashion shoot. Until you can come up with better examples, I will assume that by "feminine" you mean "old porn and bullshit high fashion".

Obviously we have different ideas of what it means to be feminine.

It's not a woman's duty to be "sexy" 24/7 to please her husband or whatever. Have you ever thought that women could not want to be considered sexy and create boners for a day? I know that I can be hot and sexy if I want, and if I want I'm wearing a short skirt and different makeup. And then there are days where I want to feel cute and safe from all those disgusting starers on the street who forget their own name when seeing a woman in a tiny skirt passing by. It's fun to look what I want to look like sometimes, not what men would want to me to look like so they can put me in their dirty fantasies. A woman's day is not 100% sex all the time, we have different interests too.

I'm not quite sure what's going on here but, "femininity is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles generally associated with girls and women."
Lolita is a form of femininity expression, just as much as pin up girls from the 40s-50's. While, Lolita is a more child-like form of femininity, it still is "feminine."
As >>4829356 stated, it has a reason to be the way it is.
Ruffles, frills, lace are all associated with the female gender just as much as graceful chiffon.

    In short,
    >Females and femininity comes in all sorts of shapes and flavors

And all men can rub one off to anything, including (maybe even especially) lolita.

from what I gather, MOST loli's wear lolita for the same reason you see people who wear baggy frumpy clothing or that crazy rainbow jacket with 5 billion acessories.
    it's usually they either want:
    a) attention, either because they want to out do someone else in something that doesn't matter, or insecurities
    b) they want to in a sense "hide themselves" because they're insecure
    c) they want to stay a "little kid" in a sense. though this one doesn't seem to pop up much

personally I like some classic since it isn't OTT and you can pull it off as fancy wear. though it looks stupid if you're wearing it for something outdoorsy or grocery shopping. it's just too dressy most of the time.

    >Beautiful does not = Attractive

No, you're full of shit. All fashion is about looking attractive, even if that attraction only occurs in limited forms. Nobody in their right mind would ever wear clothes that they felt were ugly or made them look extremely unattractive, otherwise why spend 400USD on an outfit when you could wear trash bags and get the same effect for practically no cost?

While many lolitas will assert that they do not wear lolita to "look attractive," often to keep in touch with some self-imposed idea of purity, ultimately many of these same girls say that they wear the dresses because the dresses are pretty. Pretty = Attractive, the words aren't mutually exclusive. If you don't like your own outfit, that is to say if your outfit isn't attractive to you or somebody else, then you wouldn't have paid money to wear it. You might say that you're not wearing an outfit for anybody but yourself, but that doesn't mean that you don't love it when somebody compliments you on how great you look in a certain dress. Fashion is the art of making yourself attractive through your style of dress, deal with it.

PS: OP is full of shit. I am a male and I find certain types of lolita very attractive. My girlfriend is just getting into the fashion and I'm sure she'll look absolutely adorable no matter which style she chooses. I don't dress in it myself, therefore OP is wrong. I hate most of the community. I have a list of girls in the community who I think are complete assholes, and if I have the chance to ever meet them in person, I will just walk away.
I wear the fashion because I like the aesthetic and I like the feel of the petticoats when I walk and I like tap tap tap of the cute shoes down cobblestone streets.
Not everything is about being accepted by your peers.

Maybe you should just, you know, keep it to yourself and let people like what they like for whatever reason they like it.

It's because we like how it looks.

But, I would also like to date a cosplayer to couple with at times, but with the same problems, plus or minus the fashion problem, really. So either way, dicks man.

Lolitas must have more than a few ounces of humor when it comes to their fashion. We are abundantly aware of how the public perceives us. Most have mixed feelings about that perception. But the reality is, when we look in the mirror, what we see ignites a giddy, happy, lovely feeling that overpowers any of the negative attention it garners. And we laugh it off as a part of life!

Some people feel their most beautiful naked. Some feel the their most beautiful in a killer pair of stilettos or a perfect pair of jeans. Some of us feel that way in the perfect frilly dress.

I wear lolita because i am a plain, slightly chubby white girl who can't stand out any other way. When i wear a tank top and shorts, nobody looks my way and it makes me feel like shit, but whenever i wear lolita i get an army of old women fawning over me and telling me how cute i am. It makes me feel special and princessy. I like to feel that i am a part of something, some special society that nobody but a select few others understand.

because mainstream fashion doesnt speak to me. there is no elegance, no femininity. everything is ugly and harsh and manly and plain. i want to return to beauty and loveliness. i want to feel soft lace against my skin, and decorations in my hair, to be a vision on the sidewalk. to have people stare in awe and admire the effort and time i must have put into creating something quite so arrestingly charming.
thats why i wear lolita, and nobodys negative opinion can change the way i feel about it.

I think this is a wonderland perspective of lolita fashion, though I'd have to say that in reality not everything that's NOT lolita is "manly or plain". There's plenty of fashion that includes lace, feels lovely, and feminine and isn't constituted as lolita. I just feel like point that out before making it sound like lolita is the extreme opposite of what's going down runways or in boutiques and stores. O_o

It's actually the outfit I find attractive more so than the girl. I have a thing for heavy winter coats, scarves, fur-lined hoods, mittens, all that kind of stuff.
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)00:12 No.4830690
I'm not a lolita, because I have a student budget and prefer to spend my clothing money on simple pieces that I can wear for a long time, but I really enjoy and respect lolita. I have a definite love of beautiful, well-made clothes, more "old-fashioned" or "classic" lines as opposed to modern fashion, and I love it when people make clothes with a huge attention to detail.

I don't really like OTT sweet and some of the more bonkers styles, but I think classic lolita can be gorgeous and well-done. Just as I think many fashions can be done that way. You can be preppy and roll in the bargain bin at American Eagle and Hollister and wherever the hell else people go, or you can be preppy and wear crisp, clean blouses and nice sweaters and the like. (Just an example)

tl;dr, I think lolita can be done beautifully and stunning, or awkward and "too much", but it's basically up to people to wear what they want to wear, not my place to judge.

I would agree with you, but keep in mind that there are feminine styles that aren't necessarily Lolita. Take the picture here, for example. It's princessy, covered in embellishments, and very feminine, but not Lolita.
