Get an early start and pick out a good streetside spot for the parade. Totally worth it.

The art auction room is usually fantastic, set aside a couple of hours to browse.

Be prepared for fuckawesome cosplay errywhere. Since it's a general geekdom convention there will be lots of non-anime cosplay to appreciate, including a lot of obscure stuff you'll probably never see elsewhere. Anime does have a strong presence however.

Cant miss items? The Parade. The Costumes each night. Any random concert, The dealer rooms. A room Party. The food court. A Drum Circle. A random Panel. Dragon Con TV for hours.

You will miss 80-90% of what Dragon*con has to offer. You won't even be aware of 10-15% of it. Your first time? Bring enough for food, some souvenirs, and maybe an autograph or two (around $30 - 40 for autographs). The times after that, do things you normally wouldn't do or be interested in. You'd be fucking surprised at what you find interesting.

Saw your post on the coscom forums. Isn't there some unspoken rule about embedding images in posts? I would imagine as cosplayers, people would do that more often, but no one seems to.

So the parade starts at 10am? I'm most likely going to miss it because my plane arrives in Atlanta at 12:20am on Saturday, I couldn't manage to get Friday off from work. Any advice on how early I should be standing in the registration line? 4-5amish? Also, where exactly is registration?

Also, holy shit, Freezepop is going to be there? Oh wow. I'm going to have to give this guest list a good looking over, fuck me.

What I'm not seeing on the site is a map, a map of any kind. Where hotels are in relation to the convention center or where inside the convention center you can find services. Anyone got a good idea of the layout to make one in mspaint or something?
    >> Anonymous 08/08/11(Mon)15:47 No.4824123
    >>4824107

There isn't a convention center. The great thing about Dragon*Con is it's held in all hotels. Making it pretty much a 24-hour con.

If it's the same as last year, registration will be in the Sheraton again.

Basically there's the Hyatt, the Marriot and the Hilton all in a row. One block or so away from the Hilton is the Sheraton. And then a couple blocks north of that is the Westin.

All are con hotels. Basically Dragon*Con takes over a whole section of the city.

Also, 5 am sounds good as far as getting in line. Saturday is always the hell day as far as reglines are concerned. It's the one day pass day to go.

Then what's this "Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau" I keep reading about? Is it not really a central location?

The only similar reference I have to something like that is ALA. So is the convention just held en-mass of all the conference rooms across the hosted hotels?

I have no idea what it is, but it's definitely not the central location. The main location you could say are the three main host hotels. The Hyatt, the Marriott and the Hilton. That's where the majority of the action will be. Then there's also the Sheraton (Where a few tracks and registration is held) and the Westin which was added officially last year.

It pretty much buys out all the conference rooms of all the hotels. Which is a surprisingly large space. Give me a minute and I'll draw up a map.

Parking raises around 11 AM Thursday morning to 3X its normal rate. Get there early enough and you can get in at 7 per day. The higher-tech systems will charge at the end, but the pre-pay ones will let you get away with it. This doesn't apply to people flying in, obviously.
    >> Anonymous 08/08/11(Mon)16:11 No.4824216
    >>4824186

Way more helpful then the one I was drawing. Anyway. There's hamster tubes connecting both the Hyatt and the Marriott with the Peachtree Center Mall which houses the food court. (The Dairy Queen there will stay open until the wee hours of the morning during Dragon*Con they make major cash.)

In addition there's now hamster tubes connecting the Hyatt directly to the Marriott and the Marriott to the Hilton. (All funded by Dragon*Con cash and actually built FOR D*C)

The Hyatt is the main programming area usually. All track parties are usually there as well as things like the Masquerade. It has multiple floors in the lower pit where other tracks are held. The Marriott is now the main "party hotel" for after hours stuff. It holds a lot of the tracks, the art room and most of the dealers room. The Hilton holds the walk of fame and the gaming rooms.

The Sheraton holds the registration and a few of the less attended tracks, as does the Westin. I believe the Sheraton holds a few of the Sunday night parties as well. Like the YA track's Yule Ball.

Judging by your description of the lines, I shall officially forget picking up on Saturday. I guess Thursday is the plan. I have not pre-ordered, I do still need to do that... Is it worth buying a full Con Pass for the first time? Or should I just get a 1-day?
    >> Anonymous 08/08/11(Mon)16:32 No.4824308
    >>4824288

Thursdays specifically for pre-reg, or at least it usually is. I've heard of walk-ins getting in.

But it depends. I've had friends who were heavily into anime only who absolutely hated Dragon*Con (though I admit this was in the early 2000s and anime's grown a bit since then) and I have others who don't go to any other conventions. I say it's always worth it to go full weekend pass because there's always something new and different going on everyday. The various contests, the parade, just the mass amount of costumes. Saturday is the gawking day, locals who buy a one day pass just to see what it's all about, but Sunday is the major party day. And it's also the night of the Masquerade.

(By the way, the last day for pre-reg I think is the 15th.)

Multi-vitamins are your best friend, it's the only way I keep from getting sick and also having energy to stay awake as long as possible (B12 is great, no crash)

Bring your own food. You will spend a fortune if you don't. I bring a cooler with cold cuts, bread, cheese and lots of fruit. Clif bars are great. Stay away from to much junk food, it will run you down. That being said, bring some of your favorite foods as a treat (D*C is the only time I buy oreos the entire year..NOM NOM NOM)

Atlanta is hot. Really, really hot. I live here and the heat still get's to me. Remember to stay hydrated, The con provides water throughout the tracks and the rooms, USE THEM. Remember that if your thirsty than your already dehydrated. Stay cool, especially in costumes.

Don't walk between the hotels at night unless your with a group of people. Soooo many beggers and sketchy types. Remember downtown atlanta isn't the safest place in the best of time.

Yeah you've got to be on that shit. Find people who go to Dragon*Con and let them tell you when the rooms are about to be released. And then like hyper refresh.

Or just look on things like the dragonconrooms LJ for people who can't go, are looking for roommates, or have extra rooms to give away.

We can have cgl meets Friday, Sat, and Sunday. I figure meeting up on friday, getting acquainted with everyone and doing the same for the next two days would be a good way to get a cgl party van going on.

We could meet at the fountain outside the marriot. Its huge so no one can miss it. I don't know about times of meeting up though. We can discuss that.

I don't mean to toot the horn like I have already on coscom, but I'll be holding the Valve/TF2 meetup this year at the Marriott Marquis (10th Floor) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Some of the TF2ers want to do a meetup after the parade and head to mine a few hours later, so I'm having a bit of trouble keeping it all together.

    >> Anonymous 08/08/11(Mon)23:59 No.4826288

At the bars travelling and otherwise? Very likely. By random congoers with booze? Not likely at all unless you look really, really young.

Cops'll be out in force, the hotels won't risk losing their liquor licences.

I see a constant carding from most hotel staff, though to be honest, you'll have pretty of chances to share booze with people if you don't mind that sort of thing.

hahaha I was just about to start a thread about D*C and I saw this one and was like woah! anyways, this will be my second year going. I live about 30 mins away and took the Marta down 3 days, but will be staying downtown this year. Should be interesting because I recently turned 21, have never stayed in a hotel without family, and will be joined with my girlfriend and friend. Last year I got my badge after like 4 hours in line on Friday, but everyone says it should be better this year because the new bar code system on the postcards.

    inb4 cool story bro

According to a friend: If you buy a badge, you're buying a membership to an "organization" or "Private party". As long as you are on Con grounds (i.e The hotels), its literally FUCK DA POLICE in regards to drinking (AND ONLY DRINKING) and sharing booze. In that regard, Acting like an asshat will still get you arrested and unregulated substances will get you shit if you get caught (First by the hotel, then the Cops).
Again I gotta double check with said friend, and I didn't get into any shit with the cop standing like 10ft away from my drunk circle.

Haha I hope to celebrate your birthday with you. I think I have a good idea who you're rooming with, especially since you guys are from west coast.
I PM'd one of them, but haven't gotten a response yet. Just need contact info to meet up.
    >>4826162
Ah right damn, I totally forgot that. I revised it.

Back up location is tentative. What is an easy location for you guys?

There's always the tenth floor. Or the overlook by the Marriott check in. It's usually relatively clear around 10.

Sorry for the late reply, I'm hosting my Awesomely Bad Japanese Music Videos event for the Anime-Manga track Monday morning at 11:30am. Not the best time, but better than what Otakon gave me this year.

No clue how Dragoncon works with compensation for doing a panel event, might try to find someone on staff to ask there at the con. The guy in charge of the track just told me I wouldn't get a guest badge, I'd have to buy my own.

I submitted an Iron Chef panel that I hope got passed to whoever is doing Silk Road track (I couldn't find any contact info at all, but the guy for Anime-Manga said he'd pass it along) but no clue if I'm getting that. I only knew I was getting Awesomely Bad when the Anime-Manga track posted their schedule on Facebook...

It looks like you only get comped badges if you actually help with the tracks, not just host a panel or two. I think you have to put in so many hours watching the rooms and what not.

I think you mean "Krystal" burgers, which is really just a moderately different Whitecastle over here.

Waffle House is an experience that can only be fully realized half drunk at 4am. I'm not sure if there's one anywhere near the con though.

I'll be sure to make the CGL meet one of the days, but seeing as how I'll be in full leather with a helmet on, I might not be standing outside for too long...

While it may be a /cgl/ meet and cosplay is slightly encouraged, there are quite a number of people who just show up in normal clothing. It's definitely not mandatory to cosplay at 10pm, especially if we are going to a restaurant afterwords.

Why does Dragon*con have such as shitty Digital Games track?

One room, they shut it down for tournaments, and generally be dicks to everyone.

Brother, if its 10pm, I'll still be in cosplay.

Also, personally probably not going to dinner. I can hit the chicken and waffles joint any ol' time. D*C is once a year.
