    Prime
    Enamel Gloss Black base coat

you had the next section i was about to post. here's the bit i have after it.
I bought everything I'm going to list below and continue to use the stand alone compressor. The airbrush was upgraded but I still keep the below listed one for primer.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/1-5-hp-58-psi-compressor-and-airbrush-kit-95630.html
This is for both the airbrush and compressor. I liked it because I didn't have to fiddle with air pressure or anything. But having bought the other one, I can't recommend this one anymore since the other one is a much, MUCH better buy.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/1-8-eighth-hp-40-psi-oilless-airbrush-compressor-93657.html

The other compressor I'm talking about. Really, really, REALLY nice for the money. Very easy to clean moisture trap, an easy to use air regulator (you will use this if you want to make fine lines and shading) and very quiet.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/deluxe-airbrush-kit-95810.html
The airbrush that comes with the combo set. It's great, cheap enough for you to constantly take apart and clean, paints great, it even airbrushes stuff like FolkArt paint!
    >> rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:15 No.4823152
don't ask why i was putting name in subject field. very tired.

Harbor Freight Tools is by far the cheapest place to buy any sort of tool you might need (Except a pink foamboard cutter...but you can buy the parts to make one!), sandpaper, table/band saws, cheap sanders rotary tools, etc.
Tons of random little knick knacks you might be able to use for a costume as well.
There's even beginner leather working supplies!
(Please, please please buy safety equipment as well. They have cheap gloves for when you paint and a selection of filtered masks so you don't kill your lungs.)

Home Depot has a culling bin of wood they damaged or left overs from cuts customers didn't take. Pieces are anywhere from 51 cents to 4 dollars. I've gotten MDF, Poplar, Oak, etc for really cheap. I've rarely seen Pink insulation board there but there is some from time to time.
If anything, it makes for great practice material since you may not find a piece big enough for what you need.'

Look up local supply yards, like lumber yards, roofing supply companies, etc and ask them if they have any damaged pink insulation board they wouldn't mind giving away or selling on the cheap.
I've never had to buy a board of the stuff at full price because of this.
    >> rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:16 No.4823155
    i found more.

materials that can be used for prop and armor:

    for armor:
    *thermoplastic

for something to carve/build up/layers etc:
    *Rigid Insulation/isolation Foam
    *wood
    *craft foam
    *sheet plastic
    *foam core
    *plywood
    *balsa wood
*styrofoam (with paper mache over, even!)
    high density urethane
    *Sintra/closed cell PVC foamboard:

"Closed-cell PVC foamboard is a light-weight rigid material used primarily in the manufacture of signs and displays, although its material properties have made it extremely popular among model makers and prop builders. Like PVC, closed-cell PVC foamboard is solid and has a very rigid structure. Where it differs is in its closed-cell foam structure, which makes it very light (as little as half the weight of solid PVC ), highly resistant to moisture and some chemicals, and very easy to cut and shape. It also has thermoplastic properties, and begins to soften at around 65°C. Typically, closed-cell PVC foamboard can be cut as easily as wood, softened and shaped by immersing in boiling water or with a standard heat gun, and painted with standard automobile paints."

    MALLEABLE STUFF
    *sculpey (can be baked!)
    *Model Magic (super light!)
    *Paper Clay (is clay!YAY!)
    *Japanese transparent clay
    http://shop.clayprincess.com.au/eshop/product_info.php?products_id=1385
    apoxie sculpt
    >> rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:18 No.4823159
the useability of a lot of this stuff is to be questioned, but i compulsively collect information.

FOR BIG POOFY THINGS THAT NEED TO BE STUFFED:
Upholstery foam coating in polyester batting for smoothness!

gesso over sculpey or polymer clay

    SSRS BUSINESS:
    *fiberglass
    *resin
"it's plastazote composite foam sealed with latex
and isoflex, powdered and polished with silicone"

paint with modge podge or whatever it's called to seal it.
Hobby Sanding Films: These are small sheets of sandpaper commonly used to sand the surface of model cars, planes, etc. I use them to smooth the surface of my styrene armor and to remove any little stray strings or globs of hotglue. Hobby sanding films can usually be found in the model vehicle sections of most craft stores (near the enamel paints and brushes). A package of assorted sanding films will cost you about 4 dollars. (Important Note: DO NOT USE regular sandpaper to sand your armor or props, as it will scratch the surface of your material.)
    >> rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:19 No.4823163
A.) Lay down a coat of enamel spray paint onto the project
B.) When the spray coat dries, a layer of bottled metallic enamel paint is then brushed on
C.) When that dries, surface effects (texture, antiquing) and the fine detailing are done
D.) (Optional) A layer of protective clear-coat is sprayed over the project.
When working with enamel paints, it's important to buy enamel brushes AND paint thinner/brush cleaner, since enamel paints usually won't wash out with water.

    Fixit Sculpt
    Super Sculpey
    Original Sculpey
    Foil (yes actual tin foil)
    Parts of other figs

Usually I will use another figure as a base or a piece of a figure. THen do basic shaping with fixit scult and detail with fixit sculpt for large pieces that would normally be heavy I use foil as a base shape then go over that with super sculpey, then over that with Fixit sculpt with detailing.

    (amenokitarou's sword):About the Weapon
As a step up from 2 years ago when I made this out of wood and relied on a good paint job, this time I decided to challenge myself to go all the way and create a translucent version so I can play with the light.

First I carved 2 casts from a plank of 12mm pine wood, then covered the surface with aluminium foil.
Then I applied a mixture of fibreglass cloth and loose fibreglass strands to achieve the icy pattern effect.
Then I used clear casting/embedding resin on the fibreglass. The name of the resin is kind of self explanatory, but it ensures that the sword sets clear.

After 2 days of painful fibreglassing and resin-ing and waiting for things to set...I was able to detail the sword with sculpey oven dry clay.
I actually decided to buy all the accurate colours of clay and make each detail one after another as they are added onto each other.
Finally, it was finished with Tamiya clear blue spray paint, (oh the gift of god), wrap the handle in traditional Japanese style, and tie the red material to the tip.

Weapon was completed in 4 days.
    Overall cost of materials: $240
This is my first ever full fibreglass weapon and I'm quite...extremely proud of how it turned out.

I hope you like it too :)
    >> rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:25 No.4823178
    cheap pauldrins:

make a cast of the area in plaster cloth
    let dry
add cardboard with a hot glue gun (make sure both arms are symetrical!)
one more layer of plaster cloth
    think coat of spackling
    sand
wipe down with damp paper towel
    resin over it!

    APPLIQUEs are the embroidered patches

This top also uses lettuce edging. I've used the rolled hem setting on my serger (interlocker) to do lettuce edging on the knit by turning the differencial feed to low as it goes. To do lettuce edging without a serger, use a zig zag stitch to finish the edge of the material while stretching the fabric. Practice a bit before you start on your garment to find the width and length of zig zag stitch that appeals most to you.
wool or 100% non-stretchy polyester. Because with these fabrics, you can permanently heat set them with an iron, and then you'll never have to iron the pleats again. The pleats will look fresh and crisp even after you wash them. You can't do that with cotton/twill, it will need constant maintenance with an iron.

    >> makeup tips rafi 08/08/11(Mon)09:26 No.4823179
Your basics should be: an eyeshadow brush, a defining eyeshadow brush (it's angled), a foundation brush, a blending/powder/blush brush. All of those I use every time I'm putting on makeup. If I had to pick three I'd get the eyeshadow brush, foundation brush, and defining brush.

I have a concealer brush and an eyeliner brush I use for more dramatic looks or when I have imperfections I need to cover up.

A bronzing brush is also useful but I never use bronzer (too pale) so I'm not sure. Lip brushes are great if you use a lot of gloss that comes in tins, but since I use liner I've rarely had an issue. But that should at least get you started and you can build off of that.

A more general line is to see what makeup you use the most and buy brushes for those. As in if you like your lips, your eyes, or blush.

    contouring:

I use the angled brush from the Wal-Mart HD brush set (those brushes are all surprisingly good quality btw) with a powder that's several shades darker than my natural skin tone. I contour in the hollows of my cheeks, temples, jawline and sometimes sides of the nose. Buffing everything out so it looks natural is important too.

Ohhhhhh man, I used this stuff all the time years ago for Gaara cosplay. I find the best way to cover your eyebrows with this stuff is this:

    1. Cover your eyebrows first with a few coats of spirit gum. Allow a few minutes between each coat for it to dry a bit. Using spirit gum first helps so that you don't get stray eyebrow hairs poking through the wax.

    2. Take some of the wax in a small ball and roll it in between your fingers to warm it up. The warmer it is, the easier it is to work with. Start the ball at the inside of your eyebrow (the end that's closest to your nose) and use a small putty knife to spread it along your eyebrow out towards the edge. It may take a couple of tries, especially to find the right amount, but this should give it pretty good coverage.

    3. Liquid latex! This was my secret to keep this shit from cracking or peeling (which it does in hotter weather). Use a small brush to spread a layer of liquid latex over the wax, making sure it's even. It stinks terribly, fyi, and be REALLY careful not to get it in your eye, you'll regret it. Even the fumes kind of sting, but you'll be fine.

    4. Foundation in your skin tone. Apply liberally over the eyebrow and spread outwards to the surrounding skin. It should blend in nicely with the rest of your skin.

    5. Sealant! Seal that shit, and it should look totally natural if you have the right foundation. Some powder can be used too with it if you want.

It does take some practice, and can be really frustrating, but this stuff does work pretty well. Good luck anon!

this is from a cosplayer called amenokitaru's description of his sigfried cos. i've attached a pic of it.

Base armour: The chest plate and leg armour were first modeled out of cardboard, covered with alunimium foil, then covered with a few layers of fibre glass once the shape was right. After the fibreglass set, imperfections were covered with putty and sanded until smooth.
All other parts of base armour were made from sheets semi-expanded PVC plastic, which were cut to size by hand with a scalpel, then heated into shape.

The paint job was done by preparing the surface with Slate Grey spray paint, then followed by one layer of cheap silver spray paint, and finally one layer of Super Chrome.

The silver is then weathered by dry brushing and scratching black acrylic paint onto desired areas to give an extra realistic touch.

Crystal Armour: This part caused me so much death... All transparent parts were patterned out of cardboard before the shaped were transferred onto sheets and sheets of 3mm perspex. All parts were then cut out by a rotary tool equipped with a cutting disc.
All edges are polished by hand with fine sand paper and a blow torch.

The crystal effect was done by applying individual strands of ripped up fibreglass fibres onto the surface of the perspex with clear casting resin.
The strands were placed onto the armour one by one for a desired pattern and finish and they were soaked with resin at different levels in each part of the armour to make sure the behaviour of light is consistent throughout the costume.

    This armour changes colour!
First I add a blue tinge to the crystal by lightly spraying Tamiya Translucent Blue spray paint onto all the transparent surfaces, varying the spray distance depending on the part.

To achieve the changing colour, I add an extra layer of Tamiya Translucent Chrome spray paint, which reflects all oncoming light and makes the crystal lose all transparency in certain settings.

It is finished off with another layer of clear resin to seal in the colour and give extra gloss.

Weapon: This crystal sword is made from one giant piece of 20mm perspex, and several pieces of 10mm perspex. The main 20mm piece was painstakingly cut out with a metal cutting blade, while the little shards were done with a laser cutter by :iconathira80:

Desired edges were taken off by a power router, and then sanded and polished by hand once again with a blow torch and some sand paper.

Crystal patterns were then added, again, with fibreglass strands and clear resin.

The orb is a christmas ball lol~ Inside it is a motion activated blue light that is suspended by a thin silver thread. The sword will light up when I move the sword~!! :D It is so fun to play with!

Try these. Obviously you want it to be hard, so paper mache it and then paint over it. Use a craft foam instead of paper so its thicker.

    SEWING QUESTION...

I got a whole bunch of fabric and odds and ends from a church cleaning out their supply. Some of the fabric is from 1970's and 1980's and obviously haven't been touched. Is there anything I have to be careful about when using them or would I just pre-wash and use as usual?

I also have a box full of these "Super-glo Plastic Corde." How do I use these ..?

Unless it's asbestos, the only dangers I've ever seen in old fabric is from poor storage making mold develop. Otherwise treat them as more delicate bolts due to the age.

If this corde is like a fluorescent detailing, I would use it like piping on the edges.

Unfortunately it's not. It's some sort of plastic-rayon cording for "crocheting fine bags, hats and accessories" but can't find too much on actually doing those things ...

My advice, for what it's worth, is to decide what type of costume you want to make, then from your materials see what you have to work with first. Inspiration with materials at hands can come sooner or later. When you know the journey, the tools you have will give you new paths on the way.
As this is used in crochet stylings, I would look to crochet tutorials online and adapt a technique towards a different use. Or, adapt towards what you want with however flexible this item is in other ways.
First know the direction, then adapt.
