Hey /cgl/. Can we have a con-survival thread?

There's a upcoming con here, two weeks from now in Columbus and I have the odd.. no re-assured feeling that I'm going to be ditched and spending time alone for the weekend at the con. So, since I do not have the time (well more like funds.) to get a project started in these two weeks, it leaves me in the usual track jacket + jeans look to go in.

So question is; from the normal perspective, how do you survive cons? Well, more like make the best out of it. I'm not usually a panel hopper, and I've grown up on 80's / 90's anime (mainly robots) so I feel so.. out of touch, when I go to a con. Yet I usually squeal like a bitch when I see a Noriko cosplayer. But anyways, aside from taking pictures of cosplayers and browsing the dealers rooms for reasonably priced figmas and kits, what else is there to do? I can't exactly strike up a conversation as I've noticed most cosplayers tend to hang out with designated groups (ie; have their own cliches.) So what's the average joe to do? All I've got going for me is this abnormal ability to play rhythm and fightan at a decent level, and a giant mental library of most anime series by memory.

    Anything guys?

    Create fandom specific meetups maybe?
Find a group of people who like 80s-90s mechs as much as you

Going to panels is a great way to meet people into the same thing you are. There's actually quite a group of people who like that type of anime in C-bus.

If Codi and her gang are doing panals, I'd suggest going to one, as they know and like 80's+90's anime, are cool people, and know a lot of people into it as well.

I recently went to a con alone for the first time. Admittedly, it isn't as fun without friends, but at the same time it is nice to have freedom to do whatever you want. The most fun I had was simply talking to people or even simply observing (in the sociology type way, not stalker type). I'm not an outgoing person either, but I still managed. There can actually be some pretty interesting people at these things. You are pretty much guaranteed to have a common interest, so if you see someone looking bored or lonely just start talking.

Well I'm usually promised a friend to hang out with ,except that every person who usually hangs out with me turns out to have their own shit to do and it generally bothers the fuck out of me. I don't even hang out with my "best friend" anymore after the dickery he pulled on me at the last con, which leaves me to be pretty much alone the whole time.

The issue is how to come off as not a creeper, while finding someone to generally hang out with for the weekend.

    Speaking of con-survival.
I am going to my FIRST American convention ever, I have normally only been to European ones.
So far I have heard a lot of.... horror stories from American Cons that I have never seen replicated in the European ones.
    So.
How the fuck do I prepare? I am also a little intimidated because I am from Scandinavia and I am worried Hetaliafags will somehow sniff this out by either my accent or just something I say.

Shower regularly, eat real food regularly (i.e. don't subsist on pocky and ramune), and sleep at least 6-8 hours nightly in your own room.

The three most basic things anyone needs to remember to do during the con.

seriously, i wouldn't spend time at Matsuricon. Fuck that Con. there are more important and better cons to go to than paying $30 for registration for a con in a tight hotel.

Any horror storys or staff warning?
I know now to avoid Anime Punch altogether considering how much not fun it was this year.

Ohayo and Colossal have been the only ones here in state to be fun to go to. But I've heard a positive response from everyone else over Matsuri, what makes you say otherwise? Also tight hotel? They switched to the Hyatt it looks like.

I wouldn't say Matsuricon is the best con, but it's a fun one. It's very laid back that though, so someone looking for a wild party con will be disappointed.

Also, I am so sorry about Punch. There'll be Marcon the same time this year taking place in the Hyatt instead, not anime, but better con with cool costuming.

As a cosplayer who generally wanders around on my own because none of my friends like the same anime I do and also ditch me maybe look for cosplayers who are wandering around alone to strike up conversations? I'm usually too shy to converse with random people unless they talk to me first. I agree with the person who said go to panels make conversation with the people around you and maybe make a new acquaintance?

I'm not looking for a party-con , just one where I can generally just meet new locals and hang out. Possibly help me with this whole cosplay phase since i'm new to it. I'm just a camera boy.

    >>4815840
And the thing is, how do you not come off as a creep with this sort of thing? It sucks enough that my ex snapped my cellphone in half, so exchanging numbers to text is outta the question now. I tried once with a Madotsuki cosplayer i kept running into, and i guess she just blew me off completely.

    I dont want to come off as something i'm not. ;_;

Neebie here just curious, me and a friend have joked about going to something.

it was a flip phone, i made a call, she snatched it and snapped it in half and then proclaimed to say she cheated on me with some mexican in louisville.

...well that's kind of a dick move. Sorry to hear about that, mang.

Despite your lack of phone, can't you just give them your G+ or something instead?
    >> Izusa !!Vaz8/47ruye 08/06/11(Sat)15:37 No.4816416
    >>4816401
Not everyone has a G+, and I've tried that before with the book of faces, but it seems that everyone in this day and age would rather text.

Bleh. I'm probably making up excuses for myself.

Matsuri is in hyatt this year.

And it's a pretty friendly con. It might get swamped with it's new home in the Hyatt/convention center, but if you put together a cosplay in time and go talk to people from the same series, or just people cosplaying from a series you like, you'll make friends. Don't talk to the fat ones. Read a couple weeaboo horror stories and know the signs for when you need to run before they think they're your friend, and when you meet a sane person, just have a conversation.

    BOOM friends. Easy.

    OH SHIT
I read your post completely wrong dude. For some reason, I thought your post read something like:
"he snapped me phony in half because they thought I was cheating on them with a Mexican in Louisville" who was currently on the phone or so they thought.

This is what I get for skimming.

How do you not survive cons? Are there people actively trying to kill you?
