Secret
of Mana was originally intended to be a launch title for the Nintendo
PlayStation -- a CD add-on for the SNES, designed by Sony.
Secret
of Mana was basically done long before the hardware was finished, and
long story short, Nintendo and Sony didn't end up seeing eye to eye. So,
Square was left with a game they couldn't release. They had to rip out
the floor and scramble to get it to a place where they could release it
on cart, instead.
The practical result is readily apparent to
anybody who's played the game. As much as I love it, it's buggy as all
hell, there are two weapon orbs missing from the main scenario, and the
plot is almost non-existent. That's because as much as half of the
original scenario is missing. At least the music and the lush palette
mostly survived intact.
Secret of Mana is one of the few SNES
titles to use super hi-res mode (512x384 IIRC), in the character stats
screen and a few other places...which is kind of neat, and again
indicative of the fact that it was meant to run with some extra hardware
in the mix. |
