Wig + Random clothing +/- random accessory that relates to character = CASUAL!COSPLAY

No. Unless the character is known to wear random clothing, you have created a legitimate design with SOME creative process, or at least it would be relevant to the character in some way, it's annoying and tired.

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. Oh my god, that is the number one reason I mostly have westerners in my cosplay folder: The Japanese have this bizzare notion that "WELL, THE CHARACTER ISN'T SHORT, SO BEING SHORT WOULD BE INACCURATE! Flavor of the month cosplay.

Things like a cosplayer having a great costume, but shitty shoes... they're annoying, but I can ignore them by taking a picture of only their top half. And for the most part, I don't care what a cosplayer's outfit is made of if I think it looks good. Meanwhile, the massive fucking entire floor filled with Homestuck cosplayers at Otakon this year may very well have been impossible to ignore for all but the most focused masters of the martial arts... or the extremely oblivious. Of which, I am neither.

    >People who snipe pictures, especially ass shots

My Atom Eve costume is an ass costume, there's no way around it, and there's not really anything I can do about people sniping shots when my ass is hanging out there, so most of the time I ignore it. But when I hear half a dozen SLR clicks going off in quick succession DIRECTLY BEHIND ME, I'm damn well going to turn around and say something. At SDCC this year I caught two guys at once. One guy apologized and said that he was trying to capture the ambiance of comic-con with candids and I looked good in my bright costume looking at comic books, so I gave him a pass. The other guy (who barely spoke English) said he was sorry but he just had to take a picture of me because I was "so beautiful, so beautiful," and then he asked if I had a Facebook. Pic related, my face.
My ass isn't even that great, guys, what the fuck. I have a white girl butt.

Also at SDCC this year an old guy asked our group for a picture, we obliged, and then he FOLLOWED US taking pictures of us trying to adjust our costumes, look at the program, etc. I didn't realize that he was following us at first since it was so crowded, but when I saw him for the third time taking pictures of us, I very politely told him off and he finally left.

I really think there needs to be a "photography etiquette" section in every con program.

I don't mind you taking pictures of my ass, or my boobs if I'm wearing something skimpy. But at least let my pose first. Let me get my bags off. Get a more flattering pose/angle. You'll get a better picture and I don't have to cringe if I see the picture turn up online.
I got no problem with people admiring my butt but lets at least do it properly.

I guess I can understand being afraid to ask. Seeing as some people do have the weird logic of getting offended by pictures if they dress in certain ways.
I usually ask if people want an actual picture if I catch them sniping, but they generally get awkward and turn away.

I guess the only thing I can say is that not everybody will be offended. I'm sure a lot of cosplayers would like better pictures rather than snipe shots as well.

The "sexy" version thing CAN be done well--it just takes design creativity. You've gotta do more than wear some undies in the same color-scheme as the original character or something. Pic related.

    >>4814086
    >>4814065
The OCs thing seems like something that could kinda vary, depending on what series you're doing. Some OCs can be fine if they're cosplaying from things that have character creation as a major core of it (like WoW or Ragnarok) or have highly-recognizable races/uniforms. Death Note OCs? Bitch, please.

Again, it kind of comes down to design and execution, at least for me. If you can pull off an awesome-looking Vocaloid OC or, y'know, actual put some EFFORT into a currently unofficial country for Hetalia, do it and do it with a fucking vengeance, because we need more cosplayers like you.

Nerd related cosplay is acceptable in my eyes, so is stuff like in-joke memes for a particularly con, but I seriously dislike people cosplaying as characters from non-nerdy things like Scott Pilgrim or something.

But please don't think your midlenth hair is long and cosplay a character with your natural hair who has tailbone length hair or not style your hair right... >Cosplayers using their real hair for a costume when it is totally inappropriate

I mean, I'm not against using real hair for cosplay, unlike seemingly 90% of /cgl/. I just believe that this should only be done if your hair ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THE CHARACTER'S HAIR. I actually use my real hair for about half of my costumes, but I also dye, straighten/curl, tease, cut and style my hair so that it actually looks like the character's hair. And then I go to a convention and see other cosplayers of the same character using their real hair and it's totally wrong, and I either want to maim them or shoot myself in the face. Ugh.

    >Fundamental details are the wrong color, even though it looks like actual effort went into making them that way.

I'll forgive if it's only a couple of shades off. Not everyone can find the 100% perfect fabric, and sometimes even the most carefully mixed fabric dyes can turn out bad. That's okay.

But when something on your costume is bright fucking blue instead of green, or pink instead of red, ALL OF MY HATE.

Creepy, sweaty, panting person? Put the camera down and walk the fuck away.

Note that I'm not using gendered pronouns; even though the stereotype is fat creepy neckbeard, I've got far more creepy attention from women with her. When you come up to me and say "OMG SO KAWAII! I COULD JUST KIDNAP HER HAHAHA I'VE ALWAYS WANTED A SWEET YOUNG DAUGHER AND SHE'S PERFECT!" (direct fucking quote), you have no right to whine about how mean I am when I say no and walk away as fast as I can.

I'm a cranky bitch. So time for a good ol' vent.

    >Not wearing any makeup, no matter what gender you are/what gender you're cosplaying.

My friend is guilty of this and I want to punch her in the throat every time we con together. Last year I actually forced her ass down and did basic foundation just so she wouldn't look like complete shit. She whines and complains that she never looks as nice as I do in photos and that no one wants to take her photo. THERE IS A REASON YOU DUMBASS.

    >Huge platform boots/hooker heels

Unless it's in the character design, knock that shit off. I'm looking at you Japanese cosplayers. Nothing ruins a good costume quite like ten inch heels.

    >People not even trying to pose in photos

You are in costume. I'm asking you for a photo. I'm not saying contort your body or something, but at least angle your body a bit or show off an impressive part of your outfit. Standing there like an idiot doesn't make either of us happy.

Lastly, this is probably just me being an asshole:

See the color of her hat? That is the color you get when you paint something with red fabric paint. And not even specialty red fabric paint, just regular "I found this in Wal-Mart" red paint. To get the shade for Touya's hat, which looks more red in that picture, you have to mix in some orange. True story.

But even if this looks more "dark pink" to you, the Touko cosplayers I'm thinking of (most of which don't even respond to "Touko") have hats/bags/shoelaces that are hot pink, or cotton candy pink, or pale pink. Those are the ones I cannot forgive.

Thankfully, I've never been too bad at this. I realize that I am a big and tall person (read as: fat and tall). For Acen and AnimeIowa, I made sure to make a costume that would play to this.

Eh, to each there own, it looks more milkshake pink to me, but I suck at colors. But you know what this reminds me of though? fem America cosplayers, my friend did an amazing fem America cosplay that she worked for months on getting exactly the right colors for everything(she's a perfectionist) just to get to the con and have everyone tell her her wig was inaccurate because it was brown and fem America's hair is blonde, I don't know why everyone thinks it is but it's obviously not the kind of blonde they're talking about.

Yeah. I hate it when Hetalia fans in particular nitpick hair color, since Himaruya keeps making 21435476870 different 'color palettes' for half the characters and the color is completely different in the show than in the comics.[America's hair is really weird in the show... If anybody honestly nitpicked him then I'd be bugged to hell with my blonde-orange cheese-colored wig]. The genderbends get off bad because you're only a 'real fan' if you know all of them and their retarded 'dark color palettes'. [ah, fandom elistism.]
I personally don't mind it as long as its aesthetically pleasing and within a few shades, since genderbends are rare enough.
I was so happy with the group at Katsucon.

I can finally understand the rage one feels when they can't find pics of their cosplay from a con. For my last main cosplay, I can only find pics from the shoot. I wish I could find the individuals I took around the con.

Also, raggedy costumes in general. I don't mind the usual mistakes people make with their first costume or whatever, but I can't stand seeing costumes with fraying edges, wrinkles everywhere, horrible fabric, etc all blended together. Person you replied to. Think you replied to the wrong person there, bro. On that note, I've never seen anyone without said costumes have a handler. Personally, unless your costume is one that's retarded to move around in, your assistant does not fall under the term handler. I make that clear when I bring it up to friends who don't know the difference between handler and person who's nice enough to carry my swag.

Don't be jelly because they're smaller than you. If you have an issue, lose some god damn weight.

Cosplaying in public. Also when people cosplay at the wrong places, such as the Renaissance Festival.

Went to one once and ran into some kid cosplaying as Naruto and another as Inuyasha.

A lot of kids who are into cosplay seem to think that cosplay is always appropriate for everything. I've seen a few instances of lolitas who are similarly afflicted, too.

I could say the same thing to a photog and rage about WHY DO YOU WANT MY PICTURE IF YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY COOL IDEAS PLANNED1!!1

Two way street bro. Sometimes it is nice to hear what a fan would like to see the character do, and sometimes the cosplayer has a good idea themselves. If you want the picture, hopefully you actually know the character and are familiar enough with them to know what poses woudl be good.

People can come up with the best shit when they work together (cliche as that shit sounds its true). The burden shouldn't only fall on the cosplayer, especially when people are usually going somewhere and are suddenly asked for several pictures. It gets old because I just run out of ideas sometimes, and pisses me off when the photographer is as clueless as I am.

Honestly, cosplaying in public makes me rage so hard. The people that do it just want attention, and they're usually really ugly, massive weaboos or both. People think that dressing up as characters is weird enough as is

There's a better word for "casual cosplay": lazy. Really, there's not a whole lot different between "casual" cosplays and ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL. They're both the kind of stupid cosplays that only hambeasts and neckbeards wear, and usually they have to point out who they are

Different anon here, but you should have at least one pose planned, let's be honest here.

I'm going to be taking thousands of photos this con of hundreds of cosplayers. As much as I'd love to be crowned king of nerds I have not been watching every show that has come out and I don't remember every character of those that I have. All photographers know of a few great poses, but we're looking for something your character might pose as.

So while yes, if I'm going to be doing a photo shoot with you I better be bringing a bunch of ideas and so should you.

But for all those people stopping you along the way, or if a photographer wants to do a few quick nice shots of you and you don't want to have the same generic pose he's given to fifty other people.

    Have a pose practiced.

Stubble is basically unavoidable unless you shave multiple times a day, which causes Razor-burn for most men

Razor-burn is way less nice to look at
