    220 KB Worst Fandom? Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)02:57 No.4806145
In your opinion, what is the worst fandom out there right now? The group of fans you absolutely dread being around during meet-ups and shoots. Why do you feel this way? Share your worst experience with said fandom.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)02:59 No.4806153
any fandom with excessive weeaboos and huge gatherings that are a mess.

the only one I've been a part of that fell into that group was Vocaloid. The gatherings always suck because there's always 30+ people and no good organizers.

No idea on Hetalia/Homestuck/Naruto/Kuroshit since I don't go to those gatherings (not interested).

It's a toss-up between Kingdom Hearts and Hetalia. Hetalia has some sane people but when you read it, it's tripe. Kingdom Hearts is an alright series but has relatively few sane people still in its fandom. Both are generally populated by yaoi-obsessed and irresponsible hambeasts. They're so generic that when you see a good cosplay of someone from Kingdom Hearts or Hetalia, you still don't really notice it.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)03:07 No.4806181
Kuroshitsuji. There's only one sane Kuroshitsuji fan that I know of, but she's not even a cosplayer.

This this this this. Vocaloid gatherings SUCK so hard because the fandom is so spread out. You never know what songs or videos other fans will be familiar with. No one knows how to pose. It's always a fucking disorganized mess. The only time I attended a decent one was before I started cosplaying Vocaloid, but I went to a gathering as a photographer and told people how and where to pose and got people to change positions every few moments so it didn't get boring.

The fans themselves are really nice, it's just a chaotic fandom to be in.

I'm gonna save us some time.

    >Fandoms that are extremely popular or mainstream
    >Fandoms that are entry-level tier and therefore attract all the newbies
    >Fandoms where people ship couples to an unhealthy degree

Avatar the Last Airbender fits all three. I love that series. Love it. But the fandom SUCKS. I try to stay away from the fandom as much as I can. I'm glad the finale more or less put shipping wars to a rest, but for a while there, I just wanted to bitchslap everyone who said Zutara or Kataang.

I don't fucking care who Katara likes. That's not what this show is about.

This, this so much. I don't have problems at all with cosplayers when they're walking around or asking for photos (save for a few rambunctious younger cosplayers occasionally), but at the gatherings.. Ugh.

I think Naruto's toned down A LOT though due to this generation not really being into it all that much. I mean most true fans are in their 20's. Not that adults can't be obnoxious but you saw the Naruto fan craze more with high school kids around the time it was at it's popularity height.

    >bad homestuck gatherings

No gathering I have hosted or been apart of has traveled into dark territory. It's always been good clean fun with amazingly kind and humble people.

Granted, there are bad eggs and gatherings that just devolve into shit. It's common with every huge fandom, but you have to recognize that there are people within every fandom, including Hetalia, that try to fix the loose ends and detach themselves from the ravenous weebs and idiots.

I've seen amazing Big 3 meets, I've seen amazing Hetalia meets, and I've seen and run amazing Homestuck meets.

It's not any Fandom I have bad experiences with, it's the PEOPLE I have bad experiences with. Yaoi-obsessed weebs, basement dwelling hambeasts, egotistical/narcissistic blowhards or a combination of any of these are the types that I cannot stand.

Ever since I started the anime I've been really enjoying it until it hit me there could be a possibility of the fandom mainly just being girls cosplaying as ONLY Kotetsu, Barnaby, and Ivan ("LOL BISHIES") and yaoi'ing it up the wazoo. While I don't mind yaoi, I just.. don't want to see that shit cosplayed. Especially by girls.

Different anon here. I'm kind of on the fence. On the one hand, all the T&B bros seem to be bros (on /cgl/ and /a/) so I don't think it'll be all that bad. On the other hand, you're right about the fujoshit, especially with Barnaby and Tiger. But I'm hoping that this fanbase will have a more mature fanbase, considering.... Plus, it seems to have a lot more male fans and interested male cosplayers than other quickly exploding fandoms (Madoka, etc). Otherwise it's still small and relatively unknown so I think it's okay for now.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)04:08 No.4806351
    >>4806329

I mean, I don't want to condemn the future fandom right away. It just worries me a little, is all. I know for a lot of series when it's first new the fandom is generally mature, though as it (maybe) gradually gets bigger, the fandom just becomes awful due to those only caring about men having sex all the goddamn time.

I know it won't get as bad as like, the Kingdom Hearts or Hetalia fandom, but some times those bad eggs ruin it for everyone else. Though, I really do enjoy Tiger & Bunny, so I don't really see myself dropping it, even if the fandom may turn sour. I do really appreciate all the mature fans this fandom has garnered so far as well, so I'm having hopes that with the new fans it brings it, the fandom will stay generally chill and mature.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)04:09 No.4806357
Bioware fans for me. I can handle KH, Naruto and Hetalia because they are just immature but Bioware fans are the most whinny entitled shits out there and it makes me sad to be apart of the fandom after reading the forums and FB page.

    Why:
-They are constantly complaining about stupid shit like femShepard and what she looks like and why isnt she on the cover. etc. Who cares.
-They are obsessed with who you get to sleep with in game and making sure all the options are able to be gay. Again who cares.
-They complain if something isn't customizable enough so they can live out their marysue adventure. "BAW I dont get to play an elf."
-Their online community is a bunch of chicks with sand in vag. Whenever a cosplayer is posted on the FB they constantly bitched about stupid things. I would say they are even more picky then 4chan and get super jealous that the devs havent recognized their super amazing costumes.

    Experience:
I have never been at a meet up cosplay wise (though I am sure it would just be a bunch of chicks thinking that one another hasn't actually played the game) but at PAX last year I had to listen for 3 hrs in the line up to get into the DA2 demo (yes I know ppl hate the game not the point) about how this girl behind me was screaming that she was going to make a scene if she didnt get a free Tshirt because she was the biggest fan ever.

I realize its a small part of the community doing this but as someone who is predominantly in the gaming fandoms they are the worst.

Ah, that's really good to know! I only recently got back into browsing around /cgl/ and checked in /a/ few times. I don't really have anyone around me irl that knows about Tiger&Bunny, so whenever I get to talk to someone about it, even if just a little bit, I'm glad it's not "OH EM JAY KOTETSUxBARNABY IS SO HAWT" or some crap like that. It's nice to see people being able to talk about what happened in an episode, and not just fangasming how a certain character looks.

As for Tumblr dealing with T&B, I'm guilty of keeping watch of a "Ask Sky High" blog. It's pretty in character, as far as I can tell, and they don't favor ships.

Honestly, even though I don't cosplay (I just come here to see other peoples cos), if you really do enjoy it, cosplay from it. But there's always a possibility that you could attract the good/bad of the fandom.

It'd be neat though if you did a cosplay after the different PV's, rather than the default Vocaloid outfits. The default outfits are overdone to death. Like an anon had mentioned earlier, regardless of how good the outfit is, some times it just goes so unnoticed because of how overdone the outfit is. If you do a Vocaloid cosplay though, goodluck to you!

I had a not so lovely realtionship that lasted nearly a year, and my boyfriend was CONSTANTLY trying to get me into home stuck, as were all his friends. It really pissed me off and kind of soured me to the whole thing.

I feel bad for it now but when ever I see a home stuck cosplay or some one talking about it I cant help but feel disgruntled, mostly its a bad taste in my mouth and it reminds me of 'him'

I feel the same way about certain (read: a lot of) TF2 fans. Remind them that the game has gone Free2Play and they go apeshit. My encounters with TF2 cosplayers seem to be okay but I guess it depends on how they feel about the F2P bullshit.

    Not entirely cosplay related but

They're just like meme-spouting faggots but it's okay because Family Guy is mainstream enough that nobody will bat an eye if you mention "buttscratcher" as opposed to "closing the pool".

I don't think he's a cinematic genius. I saw Kill Bill and I can tell you right now it was the stupidest thing I ever seen. Tell the fans that you're not into Tarantino and they act like you just murdered Jesus. Somehow, not liking his movies mean I'm trying to be "cool" or "don't understand movies". There were two shoots at 2011, one Saturday, one Sunday. I didn't go to Sunday but the Saturday one went much better. The location proved to be a problem because nobody knows how to fucking find that waterfall area. A huge amount of Vocaloids had gathered in the wrong place, and my brother helped steer them to where we were actually meeting. It was disorganized and confusing, as usual, but we did get a lot of group shots, some organized by character, some organized by PV. After a while some of us broke off to dance, but luckily that plaza is big enough to have two groups without any problem so some people danced, and the rest continued taking pictures. However those of us that danced didn't do much because nobody had brought a decent sound system and no one could hear the music on the tiny speakers or laptops anyone had. I think we gave up after two songs.

So it was all annoying as hell, but it still was better than the previous year, because we had the ability to spread out into groups. As much as I love vocaloid and will continue to cosplay from it, I don't know if I'll keep going to shoots unless they're privately organized.

Right now? There are a few that I really dislike.

    >Madoka

Jesus fucking Christ, the show was okay but the fanbase is completely obsessive and absurdly dumb at that. They are so quick to call trolling if you say, "I liked X about Madoka, but I really wasn't fond of Y," because they simply can't accept that maybe their precious magical girl anime isn't perfect, or that not everybody loves it. They do the same thing if you even say that you like the show, but hate the fanbase, because they want everybody else to be as retarded about their fandom as they do. Worst elitists on the market right now, they over-react about everything.

    >MLP

Similar to Madoka fans, though dumber (but usually nicer, I'll give them that.) They are under the impression that everybody is secretly an MLP fan, even if they have watched the show and stopped because they didn't like it. They aren't that pushy about it though.

    >League of Legends

Insistent that their game is not an RTS, but rather in a special-snowflake genre all its own (with some exceptions.) They never talk about anything but LoL and insist that it is the best e-sport on the market, surpassing even Starcraft. Many of them are hipsters. If the game itself weren't so bad, I could ignore them.

    >Homosuck

Overabundance of bad cosplay, obnoxious fans who think that trolling is the coolest thing you could do, and the fact that most people who cosplay this series don't even read the comic. Those who do read it and don't talk about it are usually fine.

    >Hetalia

I have mixed feelings about this because on one hand, I do a lot of Bioware cosplay, but on the other I have met so many people in the fandom exactly like that.

They're all incredibly rude and full of themselves. I was just complimenting this one DA cosplayer and asking her a question about the shoot, and she was so incredibly curt and rude to me, she acted like I had shit on her lunch.
At Otakon my friend yelled "Awesome costume" to one of the ME cosplayers and they seriously went "UGH" , as if his compliment was such a pain to hear.

I used to be involved in more shoots but I don't really go to any anymore. People are too rude and opinionated and I just don't want to deal with negativity at a con.

I am actually seeing a drop in the KH fandom.
Last year ACC was pretty much 95% KH.

This year I only say three people cosplaying it, and two of them I knew and they are just "I'm under the impression that it's popular and will get me laid" cosplayers.

The other one was an obvious first-timer cosplayer.

In my opinion, I think the worst right now is Madoka and Homestuck.
Madoka mostly because half the girls [not all of them though] are only into it for Madoka's adorable ruffle butt dress, which get get off ebay and a party city wig.

They probably have never even watched the show and are under the impression it's the next CCS.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)21:11 No.4808716
Is the Madoka fandom really that negative? Though, I probably haven't noticed since I didn't pay much attention after the anime ended. I enjoyed the series, but I can admit it was not the greatest thing in the world. I actually didn't really care for any of the girls personalities.

If anything, from what I know of some people, they actually didn't want to start Madoka because it involved magical girls.

No. The people who complain about Madoka fans just plain don't like the show and don't like that it's popular

As for the fans I can't stand

    T&B - 100% fat shrill yaoi fans
    Homestuck
    KH
    Penguindrum fans(yes, already)
    Umineko

I fucking hate Homestuck, and then it got popular and these fat fucking nerds shit up the entire internet by masturbating all over the piece of shit.

Well, cosplay wise, it seems to be made up of a lot of snotty, elite bitches and also girls who have never watched the show. The Madoka threads on /cgl/ sometimes deviate into drama and bitching over costumes but mostly it's okay. But at cons, a few cosplayers can be pretty snotty.

Not from personal experience, but from friends' experiences and the like, I can safely say Hetalia is terrible.
Not going to keep me away, of course. I'm still cosplaying Britannia Angel and any weebs that glomp me will not be taken lightheartedly.
Hetalia is dying down, though, the worst fans are drifting to Homestuck or something else for now.
That's the thing about massive and therefore bad fandoms: they always move from one thing to the next.
Unless Hetalia gets shown on, say, Adult Swim. Then we're fucked twice-over.

Speaking of AS, I estimate Durarara!! will be swamped with hambeasts within the next few conventions.

From my 2 cents: I've only recently in the past year gotten into fandoms, but even then I stay at a distance. I don't go to photoshoots, but I lurk forums. So, this is me just going on the surface.

Madoka- I've only encountered helpful people with this fandom, especially with the cosplay.
Hetalia- I learned quickly to distance myself. I loved the show, but then all the drama, shipping and tomfoolery put me off. I know a few cosplayers who do this religiously and I'm happy nothing crazy has happened to them. At least they're sane.
MLP- This one is by far the creepiest for me. Nice people and a funny fandom, but something lurks underneath. I love the some artwork, but I stay far away from the fanfics... I just want the show for what it is, not anything added on and I certainly do not want to see any of the ponies getting it on w/ one another.
Homestuck- I don't even know anything about this stuff I read a bit of it but got bored. It's a webcomic, and yet it's seeped into the masses like a virus. This one confuses me so much. For me, this has bombarded every corner that I lurk and I want a day where I can lurk w/o seeing it.
Vocaloid- I've stayed away from anything concerning this. I do my own searching for songs and video's. There's so much out there that even though I know more than most, I'm still like at a bottom tier when talking about it. I have over 900 songs of this on my ipod, but I couldn't tell you the songs or the outfits. I don't care for that. I just like the songs and Miku's fanart.

Kingdom Hearts, Naruto, and Hetalia have the worst fanbases that I have (personally) encountered. I used to cosplay as Kairi back in the day and would get a ton of hate comments. Shit got annoying. Naruto... as for that, I went to a local convention and saw a bunch of hambeasts tackle a Sasuke cosplayer HARD. I'm surprised the guy could even walk after that. Crazy Hetalia fans scare the shit out of me. There's nothing like walking down a crowded hallway to see an America cosplayer get tackled to the ground, followed by a Hungary, Germany, and Italy cosplayer trying to rape them. FUN TIMES.

Just went to a con and was cosplaying from large fandoms (Vocaloid and Homestuck, respectively.)

I'd vote Vocaloid is worst out of the two, based on my own interactions with cosplayers from the same fandom.

Homestuck cosplayers where just so friendly, nine times out of ten I got a smile or laugh when I made eye contact with a cosplayer.

On the other hand, Vocaloid cosplayers would give me a horrible death glare or pretend not to acknowledge me. It's sort of awkward.

    shrug

    It does.
That's where a lot of hate in the fandoms mentioned in this thread come from: yaoi fangirls who hate any boobs that threaten their OTP.

Personally, it's not that I hate Kairi, I just don't care for her. She's useless, yeah, but she hasn't done anything really hate-worthy. And even if she did, that's no reason to take it out on the cosplayer.

A lot of annoying fans can't comprehend that cosplayer =/= character.

Ok, obviously this doesn't count for the anime community, but the worst fandom out there in general? I'd say kpop. Now I like kpop as much as the next person, but their fans think they're such special snowflakes, for some reason or another. I'm not sure why, actually, but they just have to SHOUT TO THE ENTIRE WORLD how hot their beloved idols are, better than your faves, etc.

In short, they are miles more obnoxious than jpop fandom, at least in my opinion.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/11(Thu)23:46 No.4809588

    I agree with this.

Take Lizzy for example from Kuroshitsuji. Most yaoi fangirls HATE her guts to no end and even go so far as to be rude to the cosplayers. I've heard stories of Lizzy cosplayers being denied photos during shoots and cons.

For me personally, I can deal with female characters. I may not like some of them but I can tolerate them and I would NEVER be rude to a cosplayer no matter who they're cosplaying. Plus, I regularly cosplay Ciel and I love it ever time a Lizzy asks me to take a pic with her. I think they are really cute together. (and yet I am a yaoi fan but I can appreciate het couples as well.)

    >Kingdom Hearts
... Is a fucking embarassment. Just walking through the halls, I've seen more poorly-done crossplay so that the cosplayers involved can reenact "yaoi" scenes (which I assume is from their fanfic/fanart).

Plus it pisses me off that KH fans immediately latch onto the FF fandom and drag that down into an even bigger mess, just because a handful of FF characters are in the KH games.

Tie or 2nd worse would go to:
    >Hetalia
... Again, mostly the same stuff. I know almost nothing about the series, and the fans of it have really made me want nothing to do with learning more about it. All the Hetalia cosplayers I've ever encountered are again, obnoxious and often crossplaying so they can reenact yaoi scenes with each other.

Then I'd also want to mention...
    > MLP
... It's taking over like a damn cancer. The only saving grace of this fandom in a con setting is that a lot of the costumes are relatively good-looking and creative. But while online, it's annoying to see every existing character in every bit of tv show, cartoon, video game, movie, super hero, etc.... turned into a MLP.

And it's like any other fad cartoon, god forbid you dislike it!

Fandoms are why i was reluctant to go to cons for awhile -

    Nayrootoes, Kuroshit and Hetalia.
Honestly, after reading a bit of Homestuck I kind of like it, although i prefer Problem Sleuth. Actually kind of wish people would do Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff cosplay.
    >> Anonymous 08/05/11(Fri)18:06 No.4812921
I love Kingdom Hearts, and have cosplayed a character from the series at least once every year, but two things about the fandom piss me off the most.

    - They are the most likely to have "raver" versions of the characters. I hate that shit more than fan-character/Roxel bullshit, and there's always a handful of them at every con I go to. There was even someone on my local con forum planning a raver Namine, and I had to physically shut my computer and walk away to keep myself from tearing into her.

    - Their facination with shitty characters. You'd never know there were thirteen Organization characters if you went by the fandom. THERE ARE MORE OF THEM BESIDES DEMYX, AXEL, AND ROXAS, JESUS CHRIST. I've seen ONE Lexaeus cosplayer, and he was a scrawny little shit who was obviously just there so that his group could say that they had all the Org. members.

Only about 4 of them matter at all plot-wise.

As has been previously said, most of them only existed to pad the length of the game and have no bearing on the plot
    >> Anonymous 08/05/11(Fri)18:24 No.4812968

Right, because people can't ever be fans of characters that aren't essential to the plot.

Nope, they're just useless wastes of time, because every video game should forgo things like flavor and story-building and just lock you into the main quest. But nothing useless there either: One page of text describing your quest, hundred hours of grinding, then the final boss. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. And don't get me started on equippables and customization! One armor, one weapon, that's all you need. Anything else is just filler!

tl;dr: I think your argument is improperly structured, and you should take a hard look at what you seem to be implying before bringing it up again.

I tend to stay out of fandoms, or ditch the fandom when things go south (but I'll keep watching/reading/playing the stuff from said fandom).

The only fandom I ever completely bailed from was hetalia. I don't read it any more (I haven't since mid 2009) and I never did watch it.
When I joined the fandom it was super tiny and it consisted of mainly history nerds. There was no crazy fangirls or much of a yaoi fanbase, which is why I joined (i fucking love history).

It was good for a year, and things went to shit quickly. I just can't even properly express how shitty it was.

I still miss tiny history based hetalia fandom, though.

Homestuck gatherings are loud and scary, so I watched from a distance and then left.

A few years ago I went to a phoenix wright gathering. It was really bad, too, and I wasn't expecting that.

I'm a Hetalia fan too, and I think the reason that people don't really state specific examples is because the fandom is so notorious that they don't need to. There's already been so many threads and so many stories over the past few years.

For me, personally, I think the Hetalia fandom is one of the worst because of their blatant disregard for the laws of civility (we're talking about the bad fans exclusively here. I obviously realize that this does not apply to all.) They run around at cons making fools of themselves and other people, screaming like morons, and just being generally annoying. God forbid they ever meet someone from another country lest all hell breaks loose. Not only that, but I see things like pictures posted on the internet of a grave of a WW2 soldier named Alfred F. Jones, and yeah, while that's ironic, you don't need to take a picture of the grave of someone's dead grandpa, make a demotivational poster out of it, and post it on the internet. Not only that, but no one in the comments even took offense to this picture. It kind of appalled me. I don't even want to get into the graveyard shoots, the stepping on flags, or all that other shit that we already know about.

So yeah, I'm a Hetalia fan, but I agree that the fanbase is, majorly, comprised of disrespectful idiots. Pic very related.

Honestly, the fandom was really modest and under control until the webanime came out. Then the dub came out and everything went to shit. I don't even think a majority of the fans have read the comics. I still look up fanart and fics and stuff like that, but I never participate in the fandom. Not animu but someone's already mentioned it - MLP. Goddamn, I cannot wait for this fad to fucking die already.

I realise that it has some decent writing aimed at its young target audience, and yeah - Lauren Faust had a hand in writing The Powerpuff Girls which was a show I enjoyed as a kid, but most of the fans I know act like Pinkie Pie is the second coming of Jesus. There are a couple that are alright about it if you just say you're not into that sort of thing and they'll let it drop, but I have had stupid arguments over my decision to not watch fucking Flash-animated ponies cavorting around.

I am a lucky anon in that I've avoided the entire Homestuck thing. Didn't even know what it was until last week.

A few years ago, I watched Death Note and loved it - took one look at its rabid fandom and it put me off the series for a long time. I still don't get the popularity of shows like K-ON, Haruhi and Lucky Star as none of them are particularly interesting to me, but to each their own.

I really do appreciate the comments and, while one fan can't apologize for the idiocy of her peers, I can at least promise to continue presenting my fandom in a positive light.

Even if the manga and anime are only loosely based on history, I think that's what makes the fandom so difficult to work with. Fans overexaggerate and characterize points in the series without realizing that history itself is real and needs to be respected, unlike the majority of other fandoms that are solely based on fantasy or science fiction. Just know that there are good fans out there, and we are doing our best to keep our images clean and act as role models for our peers. The constant negativity is a real downer.

    Very tl;dr. My bad.
Naruto was, and still in some place, the worst. The fans take some extremes. Hell, one of my friends had his leg broke by a hambeast that glomped him, because he was a "~supah kawii desu Suigetsu~" and she was a Karin. I'm shocked he didn't cave her head in with his cleaver. That aside, alot of the sane/saner fans tend to go to the shoots, get group pictures, or all the same characters and usually leave before the pairings start. That's the reason why I stopped trying to lead photoshoots, as I have been threatened because I didn't do "so and so's OTP and they'll kick my ass if I don't". Pulled a NOPE and got out of that as soon as I could. Maybe when all the fresh weebs get it out of their system, it can be somewhat better.
MLP..my god, I have never see so many man children gather around a computer to watch an amv of the ponies singing along to.. I think the amv was called Epic? Now, most the ones in person are quite nice, and much of the fandom is the same. It's just starting to near that level of weebness that we are all to well aware and afraid of.
Homestuck, I don't have much experience with the fanbase, other then getting hit in the face by Gamzee with one of the clubs. Now, I would have laughed it off, if for the fact that I didn't hear something crack, along with the pain and blood that followed. I'm not going to base this fandom on one account, but if you have a person thinking it's okay to go around and do this, how many more are out there, ya know? A friend wants me to be Equius for her group, but..I don't want to run into any Gamzee that might think it would be okay to try and strangle me with a bow string.

As for Hetalia, I've had a run in with some crazies, but I think most have moved onto newer, shinier things that they can vent their homolust into. And no, I don't want to become one with you, even if I am Russia. You are already nearly twice my size. Please no.

    Agree, and
-The fandom flips its shit over the weirdest things

-It's a lot of circlejerking over the same people in the fandom >the same pictures/fics get posted over and over in blogs and /y/

-It's hard as hell to be accepted or treated with even slight respect if you are not a popular artist/BNF that has already been establish in that fandom a couple years ago

-They flip their shit over any style of art that isn't realistic (despite the canon being cartoony)

-Yaoi crazed (but don't you dare use the word "yaoi" in their fandom): Genderbends are not allowed/well accepted...because "YOU CAN'T FIGHT IN HEELZ!" Yet is is perfectly fine to draw the guys in heels and slutty outfits (Example: an artist *had* to apologize to the fandom for some genderbent pinups they did).

-And finally, the rumors! Oh god the rumors that each BNF member enjoy spreading about one another if you dare not agree with, or like, something they produced.
