    8 KB Rewearing cosplays Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)14:44 No.4803016
Seagulls, I was pondering this earlier today...

What are your views on people who rewear cosplays? And when I mean rewear, I don't mean once or twice, because obviously if you spend tons of money on it it's expected for you to wear it more than once to get it's money's worth out of it.

I mean those cosplayers that wear the same costume. At EVERY. SINGLE. CON.

    Discuss?

    >obviously if you spend tons of money on it it's expected for you to wear it more than once to get it's money's worth out of it

    Is that an answer?
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)14:46 No.4803023
It depends. Have they made an iconic character for themselves (breakdancing Kakashi), or are they just to cheap to buy new ones every time?
There are these three people that show up at the annual con in my city every year as really elaborate Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise gjinkas. Everyone expects them to come as those three costumes, so it's not so much of an "I'm lazy" thing
    >> TL;DR 08/03/11(Wed)14:49 No.4803036
I'm fine with it. There are a handful of cosplayers that I look forward to seeing in the same costume every year since it's almost a tradition (lookin' at you, Sakura-con Buddy Jesus) and I'd be kind of disappointed if they didn't wear it.

I suppose I can see where it could get annoying under certain circumstances but it's just not the kind of thing that bothers me.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)14:55 No.4803057
I don't care. If I notice them enough to notice they're wearing the same costume, I probably actually know them and know why they always wear the same costume.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)14:57 No.4803061
If they're happy with it, then I ain't judging.
    >> Kenmichi !!lT9Ulp8FHEs 08/03/11(Wed)14:57 No.4803063
It's nice when the costume is good.
It's obnoxious when the costume is bad.

I think that should sum it up pretty well, yeah?

If I've a costume I'm extremely proud of, then I'll wear it to every con I can. I like to have a 'signature costume' because I find it easier for people I may have previously met to recognize me, and vice versa if they have a signature costume. That said though I'll probably only wear it for one day of the con, and wear newer stuff the other days.
I did do this with one costume but it's a little tight around the bust and hips now.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)15:01 No.4803074
I think it's harmless and that they're free to do what they want to do.

Dallas cons have a lot of people we expect to see doing the same thing. Westernfella (though he does mix it up), Texas Jet, febreeze ninjas, etc. etc.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)16:03 No.4803294
OP here, guess I didn't make it clear much, derp.

I don't mind the ones that are amazing, then yeah go for it, wear it because it's amazing!

I meant the shitty ones that people wear, and at first it's funny and people get a laugh but after the 100 times of wearing it, the effect kind of wears off.

I get the feeling that you have someone particular in mind, this isn't a vendetta thing is it?

In any case it doesn't really change my answer: it's just not the kind of thing that bothers me.

Nope, no vendettas, it's just something I see at cons I go to and I was curious as to the overall view of it.

Some people just don't care about cosplay as much as others. For some individuals wearing a costume is not about looking good but more about taking part in the festivities of the convention and paying homage to their fandom.

I know I sure as hell am guilty of reusing costumes.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)16:24 No.4803353
I'm okay with that. There's lots of people who don't really give a fuck about cosplay and just do it for fun, so they just have the one character they do. Whatevs!

I honestly don't pay attention to those people out of the gazillion people in costumes at a con. So it doesn't bother me. I don't even notice.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)16:33 No.4803384
If its a cosplayer who wears the same outfit everyday for a con for every con they go to and dont wash the outfit before the re wear it each day of the con they are currentlyat, I frown upon it. If the just wear the cosplay one day for every con they go to, hey go wild its probably their favorite cosplay and want to wear it a lot! I wouldnt blame them or judge them.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)16:37 No.4803405
It's annoying, yeah, but it really doesn't hurt anyone except for the cosplayer who's rewearing the shitty cosplay.

For example, there's this guy who, at every con, without fail, wears a terribly made Yu-Gi-Oh! costume of one of the main characters with a felt or construction paper wig.

Do we all roll our eyes when we see him? Yes, certainly.

Does it really effect us in any way? Nope.

    So yeah, indifferent.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)20:44 No.4804321
Texas Jet, I love you man. You are a good guy. But seriously? The same Jet costumes? Every con? Every year? For 5+ years? And the same skit at every event?

At least he's been doing some other stuff I haven't seen him do before as of late.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/11(Wed)20:47 No.4804338
Rewearing a costume in itself is ok. But after a few years I'd do something to either revamp it, restyle it, do another costume/variation of the character... something.

I've noticed the same people wearing the same costume year after year. Some of the excellent ones might make you happy year after year, but after seeing it the first time you might not want a photo op. If it's a mediocre or poor costume, I just kind of shake my head. You'd think people would see themself in a photo and say, "hey maybe I should invest in new shoes, or a better wig, or resew that crooked hem".

More or less this. There's a girl at my local con who is the perfect version of Integra Hellsing for a lot of people. She keeps redoing the cosplay because people love it so much... I'd say one con out of the year she goes as Integra because someone requests it. That's cool. If people want to redo a bad attempt at a character to do a better job, that's also cool.

Pretty much the only time it bothers me is if someone redoes the same character in a crappy way over and over.

I do it ALL THE TIME

I've been wearing one of my cosplays to cons for like, three years now. Its my signature cosplay, and I've remade, revamped it, added to it countless times. I am in love with the character, and have been since I was tiny.

But I do wear other costumes now that I can actually sew, and am much more confident in my abilities.

It doesn't bug me. I guess the only thing that would get annoying would be someone entering the same skit in every contest with the same costume each con. Change it up a bit.
