The
art is very tongue-in-cheek. If you're reading for the art, then I'm
pretty sure Homestuck isn't for you. Even with the flashes, the
"Hussnasty" style, etc. the visual aspect of the series is certainly not
it's strongest.
The humor is kind of eclectic. Personally, I
really loved the word play and the quirky way of wording things. I like
how juvenile certain parts sound, especially the KIds' pesterlogs, and I
love the fact that all these 13-year-old kid things like Nic Cage or
ponies named Maplehoof or crocodiles that go "naknaknaknak" are coming
from a very strange but funny 30-something-year-old guy.
Story-wise,
despite it's convoluted nature with it's varying timelines and
space-alternate-universe-planet bullshit, it's a pretty typical
coming-of-age story. Some parts, like the Kids losing their guardians,
have painfully textbook execution, but the story doesn't dwell on that
because it know you know that's bound to happen anyway, so it goes off
and does something else more amusing, even if it's more pointless.
Like
another anon mentioned, it's also very immersive. There's music, a
dedicated art team, interactive flashes, cheat codes for those flashes,
and movie-like animations that make the entire thing a very interesting
experience. A music team update is just as exciting as a story update
because it's all a part of the same experience.
I think overall,
though, Homestuck has kind of jumped the shark and a lot of that has to
do with the fandom and the reputation it's spread. At this point, I
wouldn't wish the exposure of it to anyone in any form. |
