Homestuck's fanbase has some serious highs and some serious lows, especially with the influx for Hetailiafans. I went to a local meet up recently and was thoroughly put off by the amount of younger highschoolers/weeaboos. Yeah, they were terrifying & terrible but I also got the chance to bro out with some really cool folks.

I love shipping characters for my yaoi fix but I know it's not canon. It's just my wishful thinking and fantasies. I do tend to ship characters who have a lot of chemistry with each other (whether it be positive or negative) but I never take anything out of context and think the creator intended it to mean something other than what it is.

How To Survive a Homestuck Gathering (Warning: Generalizations fucking everywhere, don't get all buttmad because you happen to be a Terezi cosplayer and I'm saying Terezi cosplayers are fucking crazy or someshit like that, etc.)

1) Avoid most shitty Troll cosplayers
2) ESPECIALLY avoid most shitty Troll cosplayers that look young/underage
3) Trolls to avoid- most likely Terezi, as she's the most popular and you risk a 41.3% chance of getting licked by a random stranger because 1T'S SO CUT3 4ND 1N-CH4R4CT3R H3H3H3H3. Karkats, Nepetas, and Gamzees are also somewhat questionable. Exercise caution.
4) Approach well-done Troll cosplayers with caution. Test waters, abandon ship if the first thing they do is mention shipping
5) Avoid idiots making excessive bucket jokes
6) Especially avoid idiots who won't shut the fuck up about fucking trolls
7) Avoid Kids cosplayers indulging in shipping bullshit (most likely Daves humping Johns or something equally fucktarded)
8) Well-done Kids cosplayers are generally okay.
9) Exert caution with Daves. Shipper fanbrats tend to really like Dave. In-character Daves are usually okay, even funny. Next would be Johns, since annoying attentionwhores want to be kawaiiuguu as everyone's favorite dork. Jades and Roses are usually okay, but there are always exceptions.
9) Midnight Crew and the Felt are usually okay. Never had problems with them before
10) Most side-character cosplayers are approachable and decent to talk to. Cosplaying side-characters who aren't nearly as prominently featured as the Kids or Trolls usually means the person actually gives a shit about the series.

tl;dr try to stick to people who are cosplaying well and are sticking within their own groups. Avoid people who are making huge fucking morons of themselves. Pretty elementary.

I'm kinda scared to cosplay Terezi now, I spent a hell of a lot of time on her cosplay seeing as how she's my favorite and patron troll. Some of my friends in my group are the sweetest things but are thinking of getting everyone to sing "How do I live without you" and making bucket jokes and I got stuck making a slime pie and it's just...I love them, but at the same time go the fuck back to Hetalia.

This thread makes me a bit sad, sometimes I would like to cosplay a character from Homestuck but almost nobody I know from my country reads it or knows about it and there are not a lot of conventions either.

Every gathering I've been to so far has included an off-key choir version of "How Do I Live WIthout You" so... yeah. Don't get me wrong, the gatherings can be fun and it's really great meeting cool people and making new friends, but you're going to have to brave the buttfuckery of a typical Homestuck gathering to do that, just speaking from my experience. If people have had great times at Homestuck gatherings, then that is just splendid.

For the cape you could just buy some purple fabric and attach it with whatever stuff he has on it. Making capes isn't extremely difficult, so you shouldn't have a hard time with it.

And even so, being part of the Homestuck fandom has helped to melt my cynical doing-this-for-8-years cosplayer heart. I am so endeared by the younger (than me, at least) Homestuck fans in what are probably their first cosplays ever, I want to scoop all of them. Granted I have to be kind of drunk to REALLY enjoy cosplaying Homestuck (def would not have survived the Saturday night LET'S MOVE 100+ PEOPLE 3 TIMES meetup without being Drunk Goblin Kanaya) but I really haven't had so much fun cosplaying a series in a very long time.

Actually was just discussing this with my girlfriend-- while the Homestuck fandom can be rather young and loud, I find them so much more tolerable than other huge fandoms of the same age group (Hetalia comes to mind) and I think, honestly, the lack of ~Japanese influence~ is a factor? There isn't the implication that shrieking loudly and performing kawaii glompus ^_^ is something that will make you seem cute and uguu that I guess is sometimes gleaned from anime, so even though the fans are young and excited they're just less.... shrieky. Actually no, (atleast not in my experience). Many homestuck cosplayers (atleast half of them) will be some sort of troll, and many of them use makeup for their hands and arms, which if not sealed properly can smear on people's clothes. They of course know this, and will try their best to avoid ruining other people's clothes by touching them. Trolls don't get glomped, they may get groped by rouge Terzis or Mindfangs. Kids most likely will get glomped, not Daves because Daves are expected to not find that cool and everyone wants to impress the cool kid. Exiles get Glomped, The Felt, Midnight crew and Guardians do not normally get glomped as they're more likely to fuck people up for touching them.

Always ask permission.
Homestuckers have had a good track record with not glomping though. Usually it's only people they know.

A lot of the newer fans come for the trolls. It's possible to start reading at the point where the trolls start getting introduced and still have a coherent grasp on the portion of the story that mostly concerns the trolls. Hell, all you have to freakin do is read the wiki and decide which troll is your favorite and go on and on about how awesome that troll is and you'll find other people who will share your enthusiasm too. SORRY ABOUT SATURDAY NIGHTS! I was off at a room party and we lost track of time after painting a Kanaya so we got there pretty late.

Don't harp on the Karkat and Terezi that took over while I was gone though, they did a HUGE amount of work getting requests in and making sure to fill in whenever my voice started to get shot (after saturday night, my normal voice has thus far been Nathan Explosion post-shakespeare reading).
