I Think I'm Lost isn't the official JET forum, it's an unofficial forum for JET participants, applicants and alumni. As such, people were much more comfortable with handing her weeaboo ass to her on there. And there is no "second interview" with JET, there's an initial application, an interview if you make the first cut, and then shortlisting, alternating or rejection based on the interview. She didn't get as far as an interview.

I don't know why a teacher of yours recommended JET, of all things, to pay off, of all things, your STUDENT LOANS off, but majority of JET people I knew about broke even on their contracts.

Even though the apartment you live in is technically free and the wages are decent compared to equivalent jobs in Japan, the cost of living in Japan is very high, and you'd want to also travel back and forth between your home country and Japan during holidays/pay your family and friends for sending out care packages with expensive shipping. I've never heard of anyone who *saved* money, much less pay off their student loans.

What kind of translator though? A to B? B to A? Both ways? Will you work as both translator AND interpreter? In what sort of context? Medical? Financial? Industrial? Legal? These are all sorts of things you have to think about before you find your niche. "business people" is too broad a term.

If you go JET, more often than not they'll stick you in some rural outskirts-of-major-city area. All the major city jobs are taken (and handed down between) people who are considered "lifers" because outside of JET very few jobs in Japan pay a decent living wage for someone who has no resume to speak of.

Add to that the fact that you are going to be living, speaking and interacting amongst high school students and teachers who are not well-cultured and more often than not, do not speak standard Japanese but some dialect. And don't be deluded: the way Japan teaches English as a subject in the classrooms is very different from how you yourself learned English in high school. You would be useless in the classroom without the English teacher, and you will be useless in assisting them to obtain high test scores even if you cheated on the side and tutored kids privately (and if JET finds out you did this, they kick you out).

You have to think about this a lot before you leap in. Do you REALLY feel that you have nothing else ot do in your life for the next 3-5 years? Then JET is for you. If you already have a career path and a future struck out, JET is not for you.
