Full body costumes are called kigurumi. Often men wear them to cosplay. I suggest you check out Kanakig Studios if your interested in buying.

Motive varies by person. What they are is Kigurumi cosplay. Masks and body suits are worn similar to the "stage show" style to attain full likeness to the character being cosplayed. Think like a mascot costume, except with anime characters. Though the term "kigurumi" in japan is a blanket term for all of these things.

A big draw is that anyone can cosplay almost any character, so you see a lot of males cosplaying female characters.

I was a little wary of Kana's work since he has a mainly western influence and it really showed in his older anime masks, (and some of the newer ones) but these ones are spot on. I may also get one from Odette, as I've seen some of her WIPs and they're frankly amazing. She just needs to set the eyes slightly farther apart sometimes. My heart is still set on some japanese makers, but either way I want multiple masks eventually.

In her defense, that lighting would do no one's hair justice, and I've learned from experience that a day out at a meet can really take a toll on the hair. It is supposed to be two colored as well, which I like.

But yes, the suit could match better and it needs a combing. I wonder if suits need to redyed once in a while? I get the feeling they do. I know there's one masker I REALLY love but I'm always bothered by the near-white zentai.

    meanwhile, precures and babbies.

Ehhh, I can't say I like -all- of his stuff. Bridgette is brilliant, he always does animals awesomely. I'm nearly always impressed with his commissions for furries and whatnot. The Bratz masks are really scary, and the Sailor masks.. not my favorite. Frankly I don't find them "anime" enough. Too much weirdness in the eyes and mouth. He's done good by smoothing out the over-detailing in the molds lately and getting the proportions down pat.

There's two main components, the mask, and the full body suit (zentai or hadatai). The suit's purpose is to make the skin even in color and smooth like an anime character's, and is also useful for concealing under-layers of padding etc.

Heh, well, it's not like there's NOT fetishists, I just definitely don't prefer that aspect. Then again, it's like anything else really. If some dude likes something enough (ie: anime) then sometimes just by nature of things, he'll like the porn related to it too. You wouldn't call someone who watches hentai an "anime fetishist".

But really, I think a lot of people misunderstand that not ALL fascinations or hobbies that don't fit the norm are sexual. Sure, we accept a person who collects dragon statues or loves race cars as normal, but when someone has a unique interest in crossdressing or masked cosplay or hiding oneself or just plain thinks it's cute, suddenly it's a weird fetish.

It's a mask and zentai that make a character who can wear a costume or not. Not all kigurumi are modeled after a pre-existing character. Not all kigurumi are amateurs. /cgl/ is too limiting. Cosplayers probably want to do things completely against kigurumi like take off the mask and announce their name to everyone.

When I google Kigurumi, I get fluffy, cuddly animal pajama's. I've even made a pair and specifically call them 'kigurumi'.
So why is this thread about creepy animu masks? Are they also called 'kigurumi'? I never quite understood.

Kigurumi is a blanket term for a full body costume. The animegao masks, those pajamas, and fursuits and mascots all fall under that term.
So... Yeah I don't know why there isn't more distinction.

What exactly is the issue with cosplaying your own original character anyway? There's no law that says "when you cosplay an original character, it's for some creepy reason." or anything like that. A lot of people put work into designing their online avatars, personal story characters, etc, so what would be the issue with cosplaying as them?

I never understood why that was so looked down upon, even with furries. There's plenty of people online with human or otherwise characters that are totally cosplayable, so why not?

Oh boy, so many bad character designs that people cosplay. But I guess people argue that its official/a fan tribute. Then again, someone cosplaying their own design will not think their design is shitty if it is.

Personally I would like to see more fan art cosplay of existing characters (people put their arms up about this too). I love seeing them because not only is it different, but you get to see everyone's personal touch on a particular fandom like you do in fan art. After all cosplay is just physical fan art.

Maybe they all have separate backs? They're only 8,000yen so that's not too bad.

Is it just me, or are they just really creepy in numbers? Like, one or two, maybe up to four, it's fine, but seeing a mass amount of them really creeps me out. Same goes with fursuits. Too many staring, unmoving faces in one place just...

Well if you're ugly as fuck you could always dress as one of these, or if you're too ugly to fuck just slap the mask on.

A tip for /cgl/ ladies obviously.

I could see that, haha. Though, it could be a pretty cool thing to see IRL.
As much as I love em, my only issue is less from creepiness and more from I feel nervous because they don't talk... It's like that awkward feeling you get when talking to someone and they don't respond.

there was an account on flickr called kei_cocoa with kigurumi pictures on it

    now it's gone
and so are all the other pictures I saw of that kig.

    ...

looks like he also deleted his deviantart account but the pictures are still up if you search for them. the reason they are gone is someone post pictures of there hotel room and in the background there was a hidachi wand "oh no someone found out I'm into the fetish side better remove all my images"

so was kei-cocoa visiting AX from japan?
and anyone else have any more pics of the kigs from AX? if there's a few, there's gotta be more... they wouldn't take pics and share them with people if they didn't want folks to see them

I do, but I'm unsure if I even have permission to post them now, after that. I don't want to do more damage to kei's trust.

There's no "fetish side". It's just not supposed to be in the image of kigurumi to non-kigurumi so they make up "fetish".

    hooray for drama

maybe now we can all admit that kigurumi is never coming to the west?
Is it any wonder that the Japanese kig community avoids the Western non-community? You can't talk to more than 2 people in the west without one deciding to be an epic troll

so basically we will see much less kigurumi since we can't share like good children, but at least we have more lulz
Keep up the good work gentlemen. Someday I may actually laugh at some of your antics
