67 KB For Con Attending Cosplayers/Getting to Know You Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)02:03 No.4691458
I have recently started getting into cosplay. I have been lurking for over a year now, and I don't see another "survey" thread, so I was hoping you guys won't mind answering a few questions, so I can get to know the cosplay community and their general attitude better!

    Why do you cosplay?
How many cosplays have you made/have?
    Do you make your own?
Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?

Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
What do you like best about conventions?
What do you like best about cosplay?
Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?

Is there a lot of drama in your local community?

What's your definition of a weeaboo?
    Do you consider yourself one?

    Finally (and my favorite question):
What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)

Also, feel free to include any other information you want~
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)02:38 No.4691579
    Why do you cosplay?
I like making things and I like modeling things. I have also met some really awesome people through his hobby. I like every aspect of it.

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
4 or 5? I've worn friends costumes at times, does that count?

    >Do you make your own?
    Yes.

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
Nah not really, unless they were trying to compete with it or something.

How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?

    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
    1-3 a year.

    >What do you like best about conventions?
Cosplaying and parties with fellow nerds.

    >What do you like best about cosplay?
I like all of it. Making something and pouring hours into it then getting to show it off is really exciting.

    >Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?
    Yes.

    >Is there a lot of drama in your local community?
Yes, surprisingly. I say surprisingly because I kind of made it a point to become close with the least dramarific people I could find. But now they have drama too. Sigh.

What's your definition of a weeaboo?
Someone who says shit like KAWAIII UGUUUU ONEECHAN~~ and mean it.
    >Do you consider yourself one?
I definitely was in high school. Thankfully I am no longer. I feel like my last remaining bits of weeb is channeled through my cosplay.

    >Finally (and my favorite question):
What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)
My Sailor Moon, its not the best but I got my boyfriend to be my Tuxedo Mask and also got to cosplay with ALL my friends at once. It was just a fantastic experience. It was like living the dream since I saw Sailor Moon for the first time when I was 9 or 10 and was absolutely obsessed at the time. I totally had all those feelings again wearing the costume. I had a shit ton of fun as a result and the best time I've ever had cosplaying. Pic related!

    Oops I see I missed a question!

    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
Usually if its big and flashy, or something from a series I like. Otherwise I only really notice the big and flashy ones as I'm kind of out of the loop of anime and such, I end up not recognizing the majority of cosplays at cons.

    Derp, forgot the first question.

    Why do you cosplay?
    > I cosplay because I like the characters I guess. I pick characters I can relate to and can pull off. A lot of my RL friends cosplay so I do it with them. Though they're going to study in Japan now for a year...So I'll have to find other friends to cosplay with. :P
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)02:54 No.4691627
I cosplay because it's something fun to do with friends and do wacky things

    i have cosplayed 3 times

i have made 2 costumes 1 for myself and 1 for ex-gf. rest were either made for me or put together with random stuff

i don't look down if they don't make it on their own. i look down on them if it looks half assed or if it is bad.

i judge by quality of material, detail of props, if the person fits the body type or is a good match for said character they are cosplaying as.

The last conventions i went to was AX (the haruhi year) and 2010 comic con

    the asian girls obviously

what i like about cosplay is that sometimes there are good asian girl cosplayers that i can sex with my eyes

    no, i haven't cosplayed in 3+ years D:

the definition of a weeaboo to me is someone that is super in love with japan and doesn't stop talking about it. or does things because it is the way japanese people do things and tries to speak in japanese.

i am a 3rd year japanese double major who is studying abroad in tokyo in 9 weeks. i don't follow anime anymore or any of that stuff. i also kind of hate japan now.

favorite cosplay is probably the one i made my ex because it looked decent even though she didn't have a wig and it was kind of ok.

    >Why do you cosplay?
I just liked the idea of it for some reason. Never wondered why I do it.

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
Lordy, nothing fancy. I scrapped the reno one I had...Other wise, various South Park.

    >Do you make your own?
    Yeah, as best I can.

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
    Not at all.

    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
If the person gets the outfit without looking cheap or rushed, and also kind of fits the personality and physical appearance (somewhat or at least tastefully) then thats good enough for me. Obviously the people I envy/love are the ones who I can see as a decent "real world" version of the character.
    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
I've only been two 2 my whole life...Going to one here in NE though.

    >What do you like best about conventions?
Nice to see others who are interested in the same thing.

    >What do you like best about cosplay?
Kind of like wearing a pokerface. You get to be someone else for a little.

    >Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?
    kind of dA.

    >Is there a lot of drama in your local community?
there was when I was part of a group on dA.

    >What's your definition of a weeaboo?
over the top fanatic who screams japanese phrases they remembered from shows.

    >Do you consider yourself one?
no. No one around me even knows I like anime/cosplay

    Finally (and my favorite question):
    >What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? So far...I guess my WIP/teaser of Reno. It is an olderish pic and my friend got really excited and wanted me to post. I've never posted it here and the copy on my dA was removed when I deleted my old account.

Bare with me, wig isn't styled and i'm wearing jeans. It is the closest thing I have to a cosplay shot on this computer.
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)02:57 No.4691635
    Why do you cosplay?
Because it gives me a chance to be someone different for a day, and too meet new people.

How many cosplays have you made/have?
I currently have made 9, but counting my Harry Potter robes and kigurami suits, I own 12.

    Do you make your own?
Aside from the above stated, yes.

Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
Nah. A long as they admit to the fact they didn't make it, I'm cool with it.

How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
If it is well made, accurate, and form fitting, it's good. Personally, as long as you're not a drama ham beast, I don't care what you wear.

Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
    Yes, 4 typically.

What do you like best about conventions?
Meeting cool people who like the stuff I like and are sane, clean, and generally awesome.

What do you like best about cosplay?
The fact that it gives me a chance to show off my talent, and also have fun.

Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?
    I used to until...

Is there a lot of drama in your local community?
THIS IS WHY I QUIT COMMUNITIES.

    >Why do you cosplay?
I love sewing and crafting, and translating crazy anime logic to real life design.

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
7 since I started, but I only still wear three of them.

    >Do you make your own?
    Yes.

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
I think it's fine if you're not competing and you didn't pay too much for a bad costume.

    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
Good wig, good color choices and fabric, good stitching, good shoes.

    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
    Yep, one every year.

    >What do you like best about conventions?
I love seeing other cosplays, having fun, shopping, and generally having a good time being myself.

    >What do you like best about cosplay?
I love when I can make something imaginary real.

    >Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?
Not really participate, but I post finished cosplays on coscom, Cosplay Lab and occasionally dA

    >Is there a lot of drama in your local community?
I think sometimes but I don't really get involved in it. The con I go to is really chill.

    >What's your definition of a weeaboo?
When I was in first grade all I did was draw Sailor Moon and preach the good word of anime, because I was a little kid who was obsessed. My definition of a weaboo is that behaviour, but exhibited by someone older than that.

    >Do you consider yourself one?
No. I queen out sometimes but I don't push my love for anime in other people's faces and I have self-control.

    >What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)

Dejiko from Di Gi Charat, probably. I was 12 in this picture (I'm 18 now) and I loved it. I only got an honorable mention, but it was one of the first serious cosplays I did.

    Cont.

What's your definition of a weeaboo?
Someone who takes anime WAY too seriously, and refuses to change their ideas when shown that they are either wrong, offensive, or both. Also, may include being generally annoying, elitist, creepy, think they're Asian, and not understanding social cues and boundaries.

    Do you consider yourself one?
No, nor did I go through a weeb phase. I always found them to be annoying and not fun to be around.

    Finally (and my favorite question):
What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)

I'm on my iPad which doesn't allow for me to post pictures, boooooo. Anyways, my favorite one I made was probably my Experiment 626 suit I made. It was awesome! I used an old prison costume, and decked it out with his spikes, claws, I had the guns, and I did some killer makeup. I also had shoe covers like his feet, and a blue wig with antennae.

    >Finally (and my favorite question):
What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)
I normally say Kay, but I think Clover is starting to become my favorite. The outfit isn't too bad, and the wig is sort of fantastic to wear. And I'm pleasantly surprised with the number of people who know the character.

    >Why do you cosplay?
I get to be a kawaii-desu animu character IRL! But actually. Trying to make 2D into 3D is one of the most fun (and frustrating) parts of cosupray.
    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
    8.
    >Do you make your own?
Yessum, although my mom is a goddess and majorly helps me with sewing, while others are closet cosplays that I got lucky with thrift stores.
    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
If they try and pass it off as their own work, then yes. But there's no shame in buying a costume.
    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
The amount of work put into it.
    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
Yep. As many as I can go to in my state, which is usually about 4-5 cons a year.
    >What do you like best about conventions?
I love meeting new people with similar interests, and seeing all the amazing costumes other people make is so inspiring.
    >What do you like best about cosplay?
Getting to wear it to a con and get appreciation for your handiwork.

Despite its smaller size, the Ohio con scene has its fair share of drama. Somehow I managed to muddle into it, and while I will admit at times it is fun to be a catty bitch, con drama is SO DUMB. "I totally HATE this bitch because she stole this one hot guy I liked, even though I have a boyfriend and he didn't like me anyway." GO BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL PLEASE.
    >What's your definition of a weeaboo?
    GRORIOUS NIPPRON SYNDROME.
    >Do you consider yourself one?
I don't draw naked bishies butt-fucking on my social studies binder, and I only got an 18 on that 'Are You A Weeaboo Test' that's floating on here somewhere, so no. I do not consider myself a weeb.
    >What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn?
It's kind of a tie between Satella Harvenheit and Sakura. Satella was the most labor-intensive cosplay I've done to date, and I love her to pieces. And while Sakura is definitely not the hardest cosplay (or the most uncommon), I have so many good memories associated with that cosplay (first kiss, meeting many good friends, etc) that it is very near and dear to me.
    Have some self-toast.

between 10-15 depending on what I want to consider a "cosplay"

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
    No, though there are exceptions.

Craftsmanship/quality, overall look, accuracy, or amusement (LOVE joke/novelty costumes)

I'd say between 2-5 for the past 6 years

GAH, HARD QUESTION. I love several of my cosplays for different reasons, but I guess Dante would be at the top. I am always making adjustments and props, in "Cosplay in America," really love the character and games, how I met my gf, the list goes on...

    >Why do you cosplay?
    Because it's fun.

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
    Eight.

    >Do you make your own?
I have an older sister who makes most of my costumes; she really likes making them, to the point she was a little sad when I told her I wasn't going to cosplay much this year. I am fond of making props, however.

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
The only real problem is if they present it as their own work. Give credit where credit is due.

    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
Accuracy to the original is my rule of thumb for what makes a "good" cosplay. If it looks like you didn't put the time into costume and just threw something together, I'm not interested. See: L.

    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
I've been attending AX for the last 11 years, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. I am really liking my time at Fanime this year, so that might be a regular con for me too.

    >What do you like best about conventions?
The cosplay; it's what makes or breaks a con for me. Second would be AMVs - I've been hooked on them since my first convention. Masquerade used to be high on my priority list, but AX's Masq is (usually) terrible, so I stopped going.

    >What do you like best about cosplay?
Dressing up as someone else; just shedding your outer layer and putting on a new skin is really freeing for the soul. Plus, dress up time.

There's a lot of drama in cosplay period. And if there isn't, someone will manufacture some.

    >What's your definition of a weeaboo?
A weeaboo, I believe, is someone who ignores normal social etiquette and common sense and displays their love of anime/manga/Japan/whatever unabashedly without realizing that not everyone is interested in what they like. They tend to get a lot of things wrong about Japan, and probably don't know/care that they're wrong.

    >Why do you cosplay?
Because, to me, taking your favorite game/anime/comic character and bringing them to life by your own hands is the best feeling in the world. When I cosplay badass characters I really feel like it instills a great amount of confidence and kickassery in me. I really, truly feel like that character and I'm so grateful I can represent them in such a way. I think this goes for any art form though (though the feeling that's elicited may be a bit different). Bringing fandom to life be it cosplay, fan-art, fanfics, or what have you shows your dedication and love for something in a way that suits your talents best and for me it's sewing (and, to a degree, role play/acting).

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
Including my Yoko that's currently in progress and the two that I've made for friends, thirteen since 2006 when I started.

    >Do you make your own?
Yes. I try and do everything that I can from scratch, especially the more revealing ones. I figure since there's less fabric, I have to work even harder on detail to make it fantastic so if that means I need to make EVERYTHING by hand (sans the boots under the boot covers and socks) then so be it.

    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
No, not at all. As long as you admit that it's bought, I don't mind. I definitely appreciate hand-made costumes a heck of a lot better though.

    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?
Without sounding too generic/vague, if the person who's cosplaying can bring that character to life before my very eyes...that is a GOOD cosplay; be it store-bought or hand-made. I would also go so far as to say that even if the person looks nothing like the character, if their love for that character shines through regardless and they made a decent attempt, that's all that matters. That's a good cosplay.

    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
I usually try and hit at least Katsucon and Otakon.

    >What do you like best about conventions?
Making new friends. I love going to photoshoots and talking to people about the various series I/they love. Even if we're not from the same series, I like talking to other cosplayers who are cosplaying from a series/cosplaying a character I like. I usually make one good friend at every convention I go to who I keep in touch with.

    >What do you like best about cosplay?
See "Why do I cosplay?" or the previous question.

    > Do you participate in other cosplay communitys (cosplay.com, ACP, deviantART)?
I have all three but never use them except to gather pictures of other cosplayers. When I finish a costume, I upload pics of my cosplays on coscom/ACP. I used to post on the coscom forums a lot but it has since waned significantly since I started lurking here.

    >Is there a lot of drama in your local community?
My local community is myself and a friend of mine who builds props. So...no.

    >What's your definition of a weeaboo?
Me at 14, IE a socially inept person who glorifies Japan while knocking and taking for granted everything their own country (in my case, the United States) has to offer. Cannot hold a conversation with a non-weeaboo. While I think that's a pretty generic explanation I feel like anything more specific would be hypocritical. I mean I dress up as Japanese cartoon characters as my hobby...that's pretty die-hard if you think about it. And I still have weeb quirks but nothing to keep me from functioning in society.

    >Do you consider yourself one?
To a non-weeb, yes. Among the Otaku community, no.

    > Favorite costume and why
It probably sounds like a cop-out but I really love all of my cosplays equally. I love them all for different reasons because if I didn't, well...I wouldn't have made them to begin with. I'm a very unfocused person and I rarely finish anything (I have like 30 bits of started and unfinished costumes laying around) so if I do actually finish something it really means something to me.

BUT, I guess if I had to chose one it would probably be Sakura. It's comfy and easy to wear. It's also cute without being too risque. And she's my main in SSF4.

Now I'm embarassed I typed so much but...I did it, so no sense in holding back now ^_^; I'll sage this one too so I don't bump it.

Why do people wear Sakura's skirt ridiculously low? I will never understand this. It completely throws off the feel of the character and looks bad.

Omar Dogan, one of the main artists for Udon (the company that publishes the Street Fighter comic) always draws Sakura's shirt on the high side and the skirt at the hip which is different from the old alpha drawings...and considering I used the Sakura mini series he drew as my main reference since it's on my book shelf...<___<

Albeit I could probably have pulled it up on my hip more, I think that has more to do with it shifting due to wear. It's not really that low...it's like a normal skirt.

    Sage for irrelevance.

    Wow, this is long!
    >Why do you cosplay?

    >How many cosplays have you made/have?
    Made: 9
I have some older thrift-store cosplays hanging around still.
    >Do you make your own?
For the past 2-3 years, yes. Sometimes I'll closet-cosplay, if I'm more looking to have fun with it/it's a last minute idea
    >Do you look down on people who do not make their own?
No, as long as they don't take credit or get on a high horse about it.
    >How do you judge if a cosplay is "good," or do you not care?

    >Do you go to conventions every year, if so, how many a year?
I've gone to 2+ cons every year since 2007. My highest amount was 7, I think in 2010.
    >What do you like best about conventions?
I love seeing the friends that I've made through the cosplay/"nerd" community. I live kind of far away, and don't have many friends where I live. Being able to see so many people and spend time with everyone who shares similar interests to me is a really nice feeling.
    >What do you like best about cosplay?
Bringing a character to life. I really love it. Not going around acting 100% like a character, and *being* that character, but you know the feeling when you play through lets say, a game series, and all of a sudden that favourite character that you've loved for years is standing in front of you. It's a wonderful thing.

I have an ACP, but I haven't updated in a long time. I only recently started submitting my cosplay submissions to cosplay groups on dA, and I post occasionally on coscom.

Ehh...kind of. The Toronto cosplay community has some stupid bullshit and a bunch of dumb people. Makes for a good laugh sometimes.

    >Do you consider yourself one?
No. I was a bit of a weeb when I was in high school, headed out to the asian mall after school, ate pocky, ran a (horrible) anime club, ate ramen all the time, cosplayed to school every Tuesday. (Tuesdays were "late start" days, so my friends and I would derp around in cosplay and make dumb videos.) I'm glad I grew out of that. Pocky is kinda tasty, I guess? I don't throw around random Japanese words now unless I'm joking with some friends.

    >What's your favorite cosplay that you have made/worn? (Self post is extremely encouraged, but if not, a reference picture would be fine!)
That's a tough question. I have a lot of fun in my costumes no matter what. I sort of want to say Haman, because I loved feeling sexy, but I think I'd have to go with Young Nia. It was the first costume I made by hand (I did have some help from my mother, thanks mom). It was the first costume I had a wig for, so it felt like I was finally, really cosplaying. Nia is such a pretty character, with a pretty outfit, and I felt genuinely pretty for one of the first times in my life. I also had my best friend as Yoko, so cosplaying with someone was great too! It was overall a great experience. I think cosplaying Nia really made me love cosplay.
