    I don't lurk /cgl/ too often, so I've got a question....

How do you guys feel about furry conventions? There's usually quite a bit of cosplay going on as well as fursuiting.

I live in Pittsburgh and I've wanted to go to AnthroCon for a few years now just for the experience. Friends always talk me out of it, though.

They have their cons, we have ours. Id say y-con is a much bigger embarrassment.
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)20:38 No.4694119
As far as I know there isn't one near me. Otherwise I'd go to it, it would be the most entertaining people watching ever.

I must say though I kind of admire fursuiters. It seems like that shit takes a lot of work. From a cosplayers perspective I can respect that, even though the end result is pretty creepy.
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)20:38 No.4694120

I secretly really want a cute fursuit of a lamb character but I don't think it would be worth the amount of money it takes to get one that looks decent, and all my friends would disown me. No one knows I'm a furry.

Its goddamn WEIRD going to downtown Pittsburgh during Anthrocon. Furries everywhere, which I guess is an interesting environment, but damn if it doesn't creep me out seeing them wave it me from across the street as I gawk.

I was thinking of going for a day, but it was 30 bucks, and I wasn't willing to pay that much for the novelty of it all.
    >> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)21:21 No.4694251

I rather enjoy it all, and the novelty has yet to wear off. Sitting in the lounge during hours provides the opportunity ot meet many a different person.

I went to one for a project and it actually wasn't bad at all. Everyone that I talked to was really nice and polite and I didn't run into very many of the stereotypical furries. It wasn't really worth my $30 though.

Have to admit, that is freaking ADORABLE. I'm not a furry but I would wear that to a convention and love every minute of it.

The only thing really that makes me uneasy about furries is the ones fursuits themselves. Heck, anyone in a mascot outfit (even cosplaying a character like Kyuubi) just kinda scares me because I've noticed a lot of them don't talk. I'll admire them from a distance but I always get really nervous and try to walk away/hide if they come near me unless I know who's in the costume or they're talking to someone.

Same. It's one of my cosplay goals to make a mascot costume and shit is hard. And some of their tutorials about heads and moving jaws along with portable fans and underlying muscle suits are awesome.
    >> Anonymous 07/09/11(Sat)00:48 No.4695122
It's mostly people cosplaying their OCs, as original characters are more of the cornerstone of furry fandom, which I guess would be fun to do. That sorta thing you don't see much at anime cons. I think I saw someone cosplaying an original vocaloid once..

    Something more like this?

The no talking thing is part of the 'mascot' aspect. Mascots at theme parks typically don't talk because they don't want to ruin the character, and the jaws tend not to move.
More and more fursuits have moving jaws, so more furries speak openly.
There's also a set rule list for behavior in a fursuit floating around the web somewhere. That might help you understand why they act the way they do in costume sometimes.
    >> Melonpan !DhME1c6Sqo 07/09/11(Sat)01:08 No.4695219
It doesn't appeal to me personally but I can appreciate that fursuiting takes loads of money and skill, and the wearers seem to enjoy it.

    apples to oranges really

you can easily say that "all furries are shitty cosplayers" but i'm sure that's not true. i have basically no doubts about how the furry cosplay community functions in comparison to "this" one -- they're's a lot of incredibly retarded people, but also some decent ones with good costume-making skills and etiquette.

i see no difference other than the fandom is different.

granted, this is excluding nightmarish rumors of what goes on at anthrocon, but we've all read the weeaboo horror stories threads (and probably witnessed similar dumbassery firsthand) so i can't say this fandom is much better in comparison...

Certain furries creep me out (the ones that insist they are animals trapped in human bodies, anyways) but the ones I've met irl aren't too bad, and I can't help but admire their skills. Fursuits aren't easy to make.

i have a furry character i created a while back. while i love everything about the character, i am not a furry. i don't want to yiff, don't want to have sex as her. i would LOVE to make an awesome suit of her just for the experience as a costumer, but my friends would disown me as well. the people that make the super realistic and detailed suits are awesome though.

Furry cons are a little unsettling since so many of the attendees participate for the purposes of sexual fetish. But there's nothing inherently wrong with it. They might seem kind of weird, but your average person thinks the same way about anime cons.
