how old do you think someone must at least be to cosplay? I mean, yes, there's no exact limit, but what do you think of young (13-14?) cosplayers? o_o
    >> Anonymous 07/06/11(Wed)08:31 No.4682719
I don't mind it at all as long as they are cosplaying somthing age appropriate. Like if a twelve year old cosplayed Panty or another charactor like that I would be totally against it.
    >> BLUE !./././VTrk 07/06/11(Wed)08:36 No.4682726
    Are you 13-14 OP?
    Just a wild guess.

But anyway, I don't think there is any age limit, you can cosplay from any age. It's quite nice to see sometimes. I don't have any problems with it.

I agree with this. It's cute as long as long as they're not cosplaying from material that most would consider inappropriate. I'd love to see little girls cosplay Mei and Satsuki from Totoro for example.

However, that little kid walking around dressed as Kuja that we see here in the UK... That I find a little disturbing, and it makes me worry for the child. And Kuja isn't even that much of a sexualised character other than the bare skin.

Start using capitals properly, stop using emoticons on /cgl/ and you will be good to go.
    (But in all seriousness...)
I met some really mature 11 and 12 year olds at a con once. I was shocked to say the least, as these girls seemed closer to 16 in terms of height, maturity and behavior. I wish I had been that civilized when I was their age...
I also know a 14 year old cosplayer via deviantart, and I seriously would have guessed she was in her 20s from her comments on my costumes and her writing in her gallery...she's positively adorable though, and I am very happy to see people like her getting into the cosplay community!

Before I encountered these girls I would not have thought it was possible for kids that young to be so, well, neat to say the least. I've met so many adults who behave infinitely worse.

I should add that I started cosplaying when I was 12, but that my friends made all my costumes for me/helped me until I was about 15 at which point I used the skills I had gotten from watching them work on my stuff as well as theirs to play around with making things. I'm 20 now, and my craftsmanship has only improved a little haha, but I have learned a LOT over the years and continue to improve with everything that I make.

Basically, if you like it, just go for it.

My one issue is if they're mature or not. That, and I honestly believe when you're younger you sure as shit better have some parental supervision at cons. There's a lot going on, it's easy to get caught up in it and that's where we get all these horror stories about creepers and underaged kids. I won't give a specific age range because some kids can handle it at certain ages while others can't, but having a parent looming over will keep those who aren't more mature out of trouble. (or at least that's the theory, haha. Bad parents will be bad parents regardless if they're supposed to be supervising or not)

I think it'd be adorable to see some younger cosplayers!! When I did my very first cosplay, I was 10. I don't think that you can really put an age on cosplay~ It's for everyone to do; kind of like halloween! As long as the character isn't inappropriate to their age, it's all good.
    >> Anonymous 07/06/11(Wed)18:15 No.4684446
I started cosplay when I was 11 or 12. I felt awkward cosplaying as someone who was tall or adult looking, so I went for young stuff. My first cosplay was Kiki from Kiki's delivery service.
    >> Anonymous 07/06/11(Wed)18:24 No.4684475
As long as they're being mature about it and preferably with a parent/older sibling, it's fine.

    >when you're younger you sure as shit better have some parental supervision at cons
    THIS, so very much.

I recall a Kuroshit thread where someone mentioned that their younger brother would be cosplaying Ciel, and someone else started going on about how they wanted to have sex with him or at least "nibble his yummy shota belly" or something to that effect. Shit was creepy.

Cons bring out the freaks, and the people who have no grasp of appropriateness or how to behave in public. You've all seen the horror story threads. I think it's great seeing little kids in cosplay as long as they're having fun (I saw an adorable Alvis from Last Exile at AM^2), but their parents/guardians definitely need to be watching them every second, not so much because the child will cause trouble but because some wacko will decide the kid is their shota husbando/loli waifu and molest them in the middle of a crowded convention hall.

I make costumes for my 13 year old sister. I also force her to cosplay young boy characters to complete my groups, seeing as I don't know any young boys.

My lil bother and his "girlfriend" (they're both 12). Cosplay together a lot. They make they're own costumes and everything. My brother sews a lot (My mom taught him) and so does she. I can't sew for shit so i buy most of the parts of my cosplay. But it works since i only cosplay characters that wear regular clothing like ness from earthbound. They cosplay characters that are couples and children. They've cosplayed, syaoran li and Sakura from CSS (battle outfits not scholl uniforms. My brother had a really tough time with that cosplay!) They also cosplayed Koenma and Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho, Popo & Nana from Ice Climbers, and some others that i can't think of right now.

I have no problem with kids and young teenagers cosplaying, as long as they have supervision of some sort OR are mature enough to avoid the shit that goes on at cons and preferably have some friends to hang out with for safety.

At my first con I was fourteen and hung out with a small group of savvy and overall mature friends, and only split up occasionally when events came up. Even then, we didn't encounter much bullshittery and had a wonderful time. Our parents weren't there, but one of us had a cell phone just in case, and our chaperone was staying at the hotel. The only strangeness we ran into was being hit on by some 20-something con creeper, but we were able to get out of that situation just fine.

anon has already said it, but as long as its in good fun, i dont mind. i dont want to see 12 year olds running around in yoko, panty or any other character like that its weird, but as long as they arent running around acting like a gaia tard, it's okay.

Seeing this made me curious as to the opinions here: how skimpy is to skimpy for underage? My friend's fifteen-year-old sister is cosplaying Black Rock Shooter at SDCC this year. Personally I'm fine with it, she's making the costume herself too and it fits her well, I'm just wondering what you guys think about teenagers wearing skimpy little cosplays. Pic related for anyone who doesn't know BRS.

it all depends on the person. in MY opinion, 15 year olds should reeeally not be wearing something that skimpy - though, because of the jacket, its better than Yoko.

Panty is also something i reaaaally wouldn't want to see a 15 year old in, especially because of her personality; 15 year olds or younger really shouldnt be dressing up as a character known for her love of sex.

but like i said, everyone has their own opinion on it.
    >> Anonymous 07/06/11(Wed)19:36 No.4684702
As long as it's at least somewhat age appropriate I think it's fine. That being said, anybody under the age of about 10 is probably not really going to understand that it's something different from Halloween. Also, what I hate about young children cosplaying is that it's often their fucking parents dressing them up to get attention.

With all due respect, pull that stick out of your ass. Nothing wrong with somebody who is 15 cosplaying something that shows some skin, even if it's a sexy outfit. Now, if they're using cosplay as an excuse to be slutty or flash their tits or something, that's not good. But that applies to somebody who is 15 as much as it does to somebody who is 25.

like i said, it's just my personal opinion. im not going to go around saying its law, nor am i going to call anons friend a slut or anything. i just personally think it's a little off for a 15 year old to be dressing like that.

just goes to show how "behind the times" i am, i guess. when i was 15, anyone who showed up to school in a skirt shorter than knee length was called slutty, so..

I'd have to say I feel torn about it. If the girl wears a bikini in public, to beaches and the like, then her cosplaying BRS should not be an issue.

Again though, it really has to do with the maturity AND supervision. Someone more mature needs to be there to step in if needed.

I have no problem with something like this. To me it's no different from a 15-year-old wearing a swimsuit at the beach.
I do find younger kids cosplaying 'slutty' characters like Panty kinda off, and I'd be concerned by an age-appropriate Kokonoe Rin, but I generally feel that there's nothing wrong with a 15-year-old dressed skimpily at a con, as long as she has supervision or knows how to look after herself.
