    Nothing's wrong with a fedora.
The issue is when hipster douche bags think they can get away with a shitty, poorly fitted, tilted to the side, way too small brim one from wal-mart.
If you go into an actual hat shop, and buy a quality fedora, that shit's beautiful. My boss got a damn good one from a local place, and he looked quite classy in the winter. I would've gotten one had I the money and bothered to remember the name of the shop.

Hipsters don't wear fedoras. Geeks do.

In fact, the last person I saw wearing one was a guy in one of my college classes that would bring in my little ponies and play with them on his desk during lectures as well as obsessively talk about Homestuck.

Wearing a fedora just feels 'right' to me, y'know? Like I'm not fully dressed without a nice hat. I wish I'd been around in a time period when it was common to wear a fedora any time you left the house.

I'd wear one more often but in my line of work, it's best to limit attire to a cheap t-shirt and jeans so a fedora just looks silly.

It's nice to see fedoras getting some love.

The only thing stopping me from wearing hats regularly is my big head. I've yet to find a hat that fits me properly. Which is another reason why I should go into a real hat store and get sizing figured out there.

Since we're on the subject of vintage attire, what about the more casual stuff? I don't really have any pics on hand to illustrate what I mean, but maybe just a shirt and trousers with an ivy league cap or something like that. As nice as it would be, it's not always practical to wear a suit (at least for me).

Biggest problem is that folks wear those hipster fedoras that are pinstriped, made of cotton, and have an inch wide brim. Big difference between these and the real article.

There's nothing wrong with a good ol' traditional beaver felt fedora though. It's a good idea to research this sort of fashion before you take a wack at it. It always looks good if you do your homework.

You've got to get your clothing fitted. Fit's just as important to men's wear as it is to women's.

I must admit, I have one of those cotton fedoras. I don't have any delusions about its authenticity, but it's comfortable as all get out so I still like it.

That's a good tip about the fit and the homework; the internet's your friend, there are whole communities out there dedicated to vintage clothing (and some specific to fedoras) that can get you on the right path... something I need to look into myself.

Hey, as long as you know the difference. And that is what's accessible to most folks these days.

As far as learning about 40's era clothing goes, luckily, the way we make suits today and the style and cut of everything is pretty much identical. The bigger difference is in little stylistic things, like lapel and fabric type. That sort of thing.

Damn shame. I imagine it's hard to keep something like that up and running these days though. Best you can usually do is get something done online. That's a good looking suit. I'd been considering getting something similar one day. Bowler hats tend to be an older fashion, which belong more in Victorian or Edwardian fashion, which is the period I'm most knowledgeable in. Wearing a bowler with a suit would be fine though, seeing as sack suits haven't changed much since their invention.

Looks like the girl on the left is doing a flapper (1920's) inspired thing. The guy on the right looks more Victorian, but folks in high society wore that style of clothing straight through the 20's. If you're interested in that style of clothing, you might be more interested in formal Victorian and Edwardian clothing.

We have established before that pretty much a well-tailored, well-fitted suit, I.E. not what you rented for prom, and a dapper hat is the way to get all the ladies attached to you.

Go to a real hat shop and have someone fit you and find out what hat fits your face. I think the problem with the guys mentioned in >>4654384 is that they just plop the hat from the store on and wait for panties to drop. Nope. Same thing with trenchcoats. It's about styling and how the rest of you is put together that makes ladies shiver in delight.

Seriously, watching business guys in dapper suits walk in to work is such a huge turn on, goddamn. Like a well-wrapped Cadbury bar.

Problem is, this isn't seen as casual wear anymore, so you're often seen as ridiculous if you go out all the time wearing a suit and you're not wearing it for work. Fedora's don't really look good in casual wear, and people try to make them work with casual wear.

there no way to make one work without a nice fitted suit (unless you're Michael Jackson, and you're not).
and if you're wearing a suit out there in the world without a good reason... without it being appropriate for the situation & setting, you're an asshole who just looks stupid.
its no different than morons who think they're cowboys.
DRESS FOR WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR FACE/BODY & WHAT MAKES SENSE FOR THE UNIVERSE YOU INHABIT.

so yeah, if you want to wear a fedora the answer is most likely going to be no. If you've got on a suit and a trench coat and you're carrying a briefcase, then fine, put a fedora on the top. This is called dressing formal. You can't be all casual'd out with a fucking fedora on your head. It's like wearing a bow-tie with a t-shirt. You're either dressed formal or dressed casual. To mix and match is to wear ski boots with your shirt off. Oh, and here's a wild notion: Try to get one that fits your fucking head.
