There's tons of tutorials around if you know where to look, most are in japanese, but there's plenty of helpful english folk. It's not too different than casting your own cosplay armor or something.

My beef is that it's usually not necessary for most characters, and seems cowardly to hide your face when it isn't. It's like a human fursuit. But you're already human. I dig some of the masks I've seen on non-human characters, though. And yeah, some human ones too, there are decent masks out there. But so much more creepy ones.

But even I've contemplated making such a mask for Quote from Cave Story, because I think it might fit better, as he's a robot, than makeup.

I got it: American cosplayers are such vain creatures, we always want to show our faces and attach our names to our cosplays. That must be why we don't like kigurumi so much.

I guess it's pretty obvious that many cosplayers are attention whores, haha. (no offense, I whore for attention in my own ways.) but not everyone shares that sort of view point, so I wouldn't call it cowardly. Also, a mask MAY always be needed if the cosplayer isn't the correct gender or skin color! I have the fortune of being female, but what if I wanted to be some brown loli or a character with an entirely different face than myself? Also, I like stage shows, so the idea of doing something similar is appealing, so it's less about hiding and more about wanting to do something I enjoy watching.

And of course there's the more japanese perspective of the work being more important than the one who made it. And well... most kigs are male, and being a crossdressing otaku in japan is not something you want to braodcast to people you know. We take a lot more pride in our hobbies than in the east, unfortunately.

Makeup can do some amazing things. Even for gender. Maybe in Japan guys would want to hide, but here crossplay is pretty openly accepted and adored when done properly.

Huh, that makes me think. There's a lot of tips and tricks out there for hiding one's masculine form - posture, walking, photo angles, etc - but now I'm wondering if there's hand positions that reduce the "man hand" look. Well, they're pretty obvious if you think about it, but I've never seen anyone make suggestions about the issue. It's something easy to miss.

Man, that's harsh. You do speak some truth, stocky or overtly masculine forms are difficult to compensate for no matter what. BUT, there is a lot of stuff guys can do very easily to look deceptively feminine.

Hrm true. I guess I can list some of the popular ones.
As far as asia goes, there's
    GouKaOu (http://sharkgogo.myweb.hinet.net/index.html)
    Nukopan (http://nukopan00.blog115.fc2.com/)
    Build Up Studio Sigma (http://www.buildupstudiosigma.com/index.htm)
    Dolphin Studios (http://www.iluca.jp/index2.html)
    Live Wear Yu (http://www.kigurumicosplay.com/)
    Ayame Store (http://ayame-store.jp/)
    Kawaii-LTD (http://kawaii-ltd.com/index.html)
    and a few others...

In the west we have Miharu (http://www.tigerworks.org/index.php), Odette (http://kigurumicarousel.blogspot.com/), animegao studio (http://www.animegaostudio.com/), Kanakig (http://kanakigstudios.com/)... I'm probably missing some but that's the ones off the top of my head.

Everyone has their own individual styles so maker choice is important it you don't have any artistic bones in you.

Basically the main components are some kind of sculpted base (clay or whatever you're comfortable with, followed by mold making using silicone (for best results) and FRP.

"Kigurumi" technically is a blanket term for any full-body costume, whether it be anime masks, those animal pajamas, or mascot/fursuit costumes.

    God... fucking- FUCK.

Anyway, the comparisons to fursuits are a little over the top. The only real problem I have with this type of cosplay/fetish/whatever is that it's 99.9% men. The .1% of women are all stage show actors.

I still don't see why this is a problem. Well-done crossplayers often get praise, don't they? I remember this one male Selty who was totally awesome and convincing. Plus, it's natural that the ability to hide your face draws in a lot of males who would be otherwise too shy (or have some manner of shame otherwise brought upon them) to crossplay normally.

Anyhow, I don't normally save images of Ena model masks since I'm pretty bored of them, but this is a super cute uniform.

Well yeah, they get praise when they do it well and don't hide their face... that Celty being an exception because the character doesn't have a face to hide.

Oshi's got a decent idea to add to a cosplay that doesn't have a normal face, but dude does fursuits all the time so whatever

See but this is just leading into some kind of "Hide face = Bad" fallacy. Since when is hiding your face bad? Shouldn't the quality of the cosplay be important, not whatever person is in the costume?

    Nope.

Hiding your face in a big plastic bulb with a staring blank face on it is fucking creepy. Compared to the BIG PLASTIC BULB WITH A STARING BLANK FACE I don't give a shit about your French seams and well-coordinated shoes.

Cool opinions, dude. I think those big plastic bulbs are adorable, (and many others, clearly) so that argument doesn't exactly hold. I don't see someone in a mask when I look at these, I see the character. It just depends on how you look at it.

Yes, it depends. It depends on whether you've insulated yourself in a self-reinforcing bubble of people who have convinced each other that IT'S OKAY BRO

It's considered poor form to photo yourself in costume without the mask, or to even be seen that way. There's a big taboo against "ruining the magic" so to speak. Also, most male kids don't want people to know their identity, as they probably have a rather normal life to keep up. Being a crossdressing otaku isn't exactly something people flaunt over there. For professionals it's probably a little different, so that's why you usually see girls like that. But really, it's because it's against protocol. No demasking in public, no talking in costume, be in character, etc.

Fuck that, ruining the magic is great.
Last Otakon, when I was wearing Repede with our Vesperia group, a little kid grabbed my hand and started walking with me.
I lifted my mask to see what it was, since I couldn't really see down (mask wasn't quite finished/secure), and the kid ran back to his mom, and straight into a railing. It was glorious, minus the pursuant crying.

If I'm hot, or standing around talking, fuck y'all, mask comes off.
Your community need more dudes who don't give a shit and break code.

Y..yeah, not making kids cry is also important. "Never ruin children's dreams", to quote a japanese kig. In fact, there's a lot of interesting things most people don't know about properly interacting with children while in costume!

Doing shit like that is what ruins the fun for everyone and gives hobbies a bad rep. Having good manners and behaving oneself isn't just nice to the onlookers, it's nice for the community too. Imagine if someone wasn't able to get permission to photoshoot at a location because of a bad previous experience? Besides that, maskers who act like jerkoffs are usually not looked on so pleasantly by the rest, and mask makers usually have legal agreements when you buy their product about what you can and can't do.

All I did was lift my mask to see what grabbed my hand. The kid running off and smacking into a metal railing was just a bonus.

Not being a jerk outright, just being a jerk for laughing/not caring.
