Seagulls, I'm trying to get more into rave fashion and wanted to know how you guys do it. Are there general guidelines when putting together an outfit? Do you buy your outfits or make them?

There is no set "rave fashion," since there are so many different people who go to raves. If you just mean generic neon-y stuff that won't get you confused with a scene kid, there are a few easy ways to achieve this-
layers, while still keeping cool (since you'll be dancing a lot). This means mesh, fishnets, many necklaces, hair accessories, bracelets, etc. You can choose a set colorscheme (black and pink, lime and purple) or just go all-out rainbow. You can use black, but try not to make it the predominant color in your outfit. Stay away from greys. For girls, short hair in an unusual color is pretty typical. It's harder to look like an actual raver and less like a club slut when you have plain, straight, blonde hair.
Goggles are popular, as are LED accessories. Tutus are popular, however keep in mind just because you can find a 12 dollar "tutu" at hot topic, does not mean it's tasteful or fashionable. Look for one that covers your butt and is relatively opaque, i.e. you can't see your underwear through it. To make this more fitting, you can also wear a short petticoat or tutu under an actual short skirt.
Baggy UFO pants used to be in style for ravers, but it's kind of old now. However, as most people don't care what you're wearing at a rave, you can still get by with it if you like them.

To be honest, the only kind of thing you want to avoid is "grey lacy shirt I got from Forever 21 and pink short shorts with sandals. With REAL PONY BEAD BRACELETS!"

I fall under the "kandi kid" subsection (for lack of a better word) so I like sticking with bright neon colors and decking myself out in kandi like there's no tomorrow, but I also really like doing cyberfalls with my outfits.
The girl in me definitely prefers fashion over function so just keep in mind what you know you'll be able to handle/be comfortable in for hours on end, okay with sweating/being hot in, and won't get in the way of you enjoying the rave to the full potential (ex. big platform shoes when you know that you'll just fall flat on your face).
Other than that, listen to >>4594973 and just find a "style" that suits you
