Really hard to do that in a con setting as you're not going to be able have the proper setting for the scenes. Course you can shoot on location but that requires some insane organizing skills and you're entering short movie territory.

When you say cosplay short films do you mean "fan films" where you try to either reenact a key moment from a series or do an original storyline that fits the original? I ask this because doing such a project is a bit more difficult than grabbing some con vids.

In addition to having badass costumes, proper locations and be able to coordinate the schedules over everyone involved but then you got to add acting to the mix. Cosplayers aren't really known for their acting abilities as the hobby only asks to simply look and pose like the character and not needing to talk and behave like them. Also when a cosplayer is in a short film they're not going to be someone dressed up as a character but instead a live action representation of the character thus things get a bit sticker. Sure they have cool outfits but can they embody the physicality and speaking styles of the original? An obvious fix would be to get someone who knows how to act and make them the outfit. While this is a good solution you're just adding more people into the equation.

This is why people stick to just the cons as there is was less hassle.

I was traumatized by doing a Miku cosplay PV a few months ago.

We did a 2 day shoot and the results didn't come out good. We had a mediocre location, the weather was also shitty. I was the only person who took care of shooting, looking at the storyboards prepared and it was a very stressful task add to that, that the cosplayer had a hard time doing expressions / acting since it was just her 2nd time of doing it.

Does acksonl use a higher framerate than usual for his videos or somethin?

Yeah. If you actually wanna touch the rigs, you'll either have to be someone's bitch for years or go through a post-route and work your way back.
Eg: Be technical assistant and pipeline advisor on RED rigs a few times due to knowing the data workflow.

Yeah. The RED is industry standard due to cheapness and usability but it's more of a comp sci camera than a dedicated camera. Very clunky to use at all. Alexa is much nicer and from the files I've handled, seems to render nicer too with its slightly better 422

I'm interested in doing cosplay videos, but as soon as someone does it everyone cries Acksonl clone.

There's only so much you can do different. He does the pans, now he does shots of the pose happening (as oppose to the pan where theyve already posed), and now his music video style ones.

I think it would be a lot of fun to get into these, but I just cant gather up the balls to do it, especially since Ackson and i live in the same city and attend all the same cons. I dont think I have the guts to be shooting at the same con he is..

And I just started to do videos by myself... yet I lack that awesome equipment (just have 60D and 550D) but the people I asked in my community where rather nice and liked that I try my best to make cosplay- or convention-videos. Even though they knew acksonl's videos. Noone was talking about being a copycat and the people I asked cheered me up to keep trying.

I could imagine that there will be a lot of people in your area who might think the same. I just hope that there isn't much drama going on. Acksonl should feel honored that the inspired people to make their own videos. But I really have no clue if he is a dickhead who wants the fame for himself or if he is really the chillin' guy who he seems to be. If it's the last he'll be totally fine with you filming on the same cons.

Sure Acksonl is awesome, but he can't be in two places at once. I know I was looking forward to him coming to AN, but he went to Fanime instead this year. So there's no good cosplay showcases from this year.

Saw acksonl at Fanime, first time was amusing. Equipment was what I thought it'd be, no big deal. Second time he shows up, I'm like "Couldn't he be shooting someone else at this moment???". Third time he shows up, it's like, "Geez, video dude again. Get the fuck out of my shot!". If I want to shoot a fucking pan, I'd shoot a fucking pan. He could learn to be mindful of other videographers. Other than that, it's nothing personal.
