158 KB Cosplaying with disabilities Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)02:28 No.4554388
A post in the weaboo story thread sparked my interest. How many of you have a mental/physical disability? Does it get in the way of you cosplaying?
I've lost sight in one eye so I wear an eyepatch. I don't have to, but it looks bad ass and I enjoy cosplaying eyepatched characters.

I'm diabetic that wears an insulin pump.
Some time I forget that so I'm a little effed with some cosplays.
Like the one I'm working on now, I wear a leotard and I dunno wear I'll be able to attach my pump.
I think I might have to have the cord sticking out of one of my legs and attach it to my belt.
I could put a hole in the leotard as well, but I really don't want to :/

Oh, and I'm not mentally retarded but I post like one.

i have a bad knee, so i can't walk for extended amounts of time without having to sit down and rest a bit...
it makes walking around at cons a bit annoying, but it's not so bad.
aside from that, i have Limbic ADD, which makes me tired and depressed alot of the time, and i have issues with focus so making props always takes way longer than it should cuz i either can't muster the energy and/or will power to make anything, or can't focus for long enough to apply a coat of paint.
    but really, nothing major.

I'm the mute anon from the weaboo stories thread. It's just hard to communicate with average congoes and it makes me sad I'll never be able to do a panel :(
It makes me feel bad when I cosplay talkative/loud characters too because I can't act in character.
Also, I am ridiculously jealous of voice actors. That is all.

i don't wanna be insensitive about this... but what's the cause of your mutism?
were you born without a voice box, or is it some kind of brain function thing?
i'm not trying to be rude or anything, i just find it interesting..
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)02:53 No.4554446
    >>4554441
it's okay. I'm kind of stupid so don't fully understand it myself, but I was born with damage to the speech centre of my brain.
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)02:54 No.4554450
I have albinism. I suppose I could be a Rei, or any of the 'definately not exactly identical to Rei's that populated 90s anime...

Problem is, I have the whole photosensitivity thing going on with it, and the only albinoid I've seen in anime wearing sunglasses was Chief Freeman from Tekkaman Blade...

does the character you are cosplaying as have some sort of belt you could hide the pump in?

also does the cannula have to be inserted in a specific area of your body?
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)03:11 No.4554490
    >>4554465
    Yeah, I'm working on Valkyrie.
She has a belt, so I'm not too worried wear the pump will clip on more so the tubing is coming from.
I usually have it like in the picture or on the sides of my lower back. But in general around my mid-section.

Im pretty crippled in my legs and hands so it makes actually making the cosplays a bit more difficult, but luckily with enough vicodin I can stand and look pretty long enough for shoots ^^

My friend who is diabetic wore an insulin pump for awhile. She was always able to hide it - lots of times she would put it in her bra or a pocket somewhere. If need be could you take it off and give yourself insulin shots?
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)03:34 No.4554542
    >>4554504
I thought about that, but I haven't taken shots in over 10 years, lol. A little about switching over just for cosplay.
And apparently the insulin I use (don't ask me how, lol, I really have no idea, I was told this) is designed for the pump as well.
If my leotard isn't too tight, however, I might try putting it on my bra on my back. I'll have a cape to cover that anyway.
    Thanks :)

    >>4554423 same here. The only way I can walk for and dance around for an extended period of time is if I max out pain killers and get drunk.
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)03:43 No.4554567
My ex had spastic diplegia and fucked up hips/legs in general. For a while it was looking like she would need surgery that would leave her in a wheelchair for like half a year, so we were planning on cosplaying Eliza and Faust from Shaman King whenever that happened.
    >> Bushido Brown 06/05/11(Sun)03:50 No.4554585
I don't know his name, but I've seen him in cons a few times.

There's a pretty damn good cosplayer that's wheelchair bound. I've seen him do Advent Children Rufus and a few others, many of whom don't actually use a wheelchair, but his costumes are good, so I don't hate.
I'd like to see him do Harmon from Killer 7 though.

    that's actually kind of cool.
i mean, i'm sure it really sucks,
but from an oblivious outsider's point of view, it seems interesting...
    i dunno, maybe i'm wrong.
i assume you're fluent in ASL?
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)04:13 No.4554643
    >>4554591
It does suck, but on the positive side usually hotel employees, airflight attendents and whatnot are much nicer to me when they find out I'm mute and I also used to get lots of sympathy in school and could get away with a lot of things other kids can't.
Yes, I'm fluent in ASL. Not that its much help as not many people (aside from the deaf population) know it.
I usually carry around a notepad or sketchbook so I can write to people though.
I think the worst thing for me is getting a phone call. Most people who know me just text but sometimes companies or bfs friends will call and I sometimes have to get a random passerby to say things for me, which can get embarassing.

    >get a random passerby to say things for me
you are my favorite right now. idk why but i find that awesome.
there's a book series i read in which one of the main characters is mute. if someone calls him on the phone he whistles
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)04:25 No.4554663
A friend of mine wants to cosplay but has cerebral palsy in both legs. He can't walk for long and when he does he walks rather funny.
ever see that show larry the cable guy did on people in wal-mart after 2am? yea like that. I was thinking of having him cosplay someone in a wheelchair just so he doesnt tire himself out and so noone makes fun og him for the way he walks
i also can not spell at 130am

Do Shiro from Deadman Wonderland! Or Accelerator from ToAru. You'd also make an amazing Kagura or Gakupo as the Yato are supposed to have super fair skin anyway. Are there tinted contacts you could get? I don't see the problem with just wearing sunglasses and taking them off for photos (but you'd probably have to carry a sign explaining your situation or else FLASH EVERYWHERE).

The pale as crap dolls in Rozen Maiden also spring to mind, Suigintou and the other two from season 2.
