    Just wondering-
how do you get your money for cosplay?
do you make your parents buy it all for you?
    job?

thanks for letting me waste your time
    :D

    Just got hired today!
So hopefully I /can/ start dumping my own money into cosplays.

Sorry that that's not exactly the answer to your question...

...This is pretty lame, but I get an allowance. But this is because I slave my ass off doing chores in this house to keep it looking...presentable.
30 bucks a week by now, so it works.
Sometimes my mom helps out with fabric.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)17:46 No.4458293
I'm spoiled. My mom used to just do everything for me and if there were any buttons/painting/studs, I'd do it.

But I felt bad once I learned how much she spent on this stuff, so now she just makes the basic costume and I buy the detailing stuff/wigs/whatever with my allowance, which I guess is still technically her money, but at least I work for it.

I'm a self reliant and financially responsible adult.

Mom helps me with sewing advice on rare occasions, but they have never paid for my hobby.

They have, however, helped pay for my car troubles over the years.

If I had gotten into cosplaying back in the days of allowance, that's what I would have used. Instead I was using that money on music and movies and school lunch, etc, since I didn't get into cons and cosplaying until I was old enough to get a job of my own. Which I did. Mom lost her job around the same time (place closed suddenly), so all she did was sew stuff for me until I figured out how to do it myself--I still paid for anything that wasn't already laying around the sewing room free for use.

    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)18:00 No.4458357
    A bit of both.

If it doesn't cost a lot my mom or grandma will buy it, but if it does I wait for my b-day or x-mas.

But soon I'll have a job so I'll be buying the stuff I need.

That's just something poor people tell themselves so they can feel morally superior even if they can't be financially superior.

I've met rich people who were not at all douchebags, although I'm sure quite a few of them are. Then again, lots of people are douchebags regardless of how much money they have, I don't think it's really a function of wealth.

Worked my ass off at a part time job for most of this school year for my cash. Most of it's in savings, but I skimmed off the top for cosplay. The only thing my parents paid for is my Cendrillon fabric... because it's doubling as my prom dress.

I get an allowance too. It's mostly for art supplies and school stuff. I try not to spend that much and save as much as possible so I can buy what I need for cosplaying. I am extremely cheap.

I mentioned getting a part time job but my parents want me to focus on my studies so that's when they started to give me an allowance. That was only about 2 months ago.

I am a professional registered nurse working in a detox unit. My job can be pretty fun at times because drug addicts, alcoholics, and mental patients can get into some pretty crazy shenanigans. Of course, they can also be a pain in the ass when they become drug-seeking or expect to be treated like royalty. I swear to G-D they would tell staff that they should get better food or razors because their medicaid spends $1700 a day for them to be here.

I make a decent salary and I have few expenses so I have quite a bit saved up. However, I have no sewing skills whatsoever so I just buy my cosplays. I'm currently looking into commissioning costumes of The Crimson Bolt from the movie Super, Guts's Berserker armor, Sky High from Tiger and Bunny, and an Imperial Commissar from Warhammer 40k so any recommendations on individuals/companies are appreciated. I'm also looking into becoming a Brolita and I have quite a bit of money saved up on some Brand that I'd like to buy.

I'm a highway constuction inspector, make pretty good money. Still laid off, jobs aren't starting yet because my state is fucking bankrupt and won't release funds to hire inspectors, so no work is going on right now. So technically useing tax dollars from unemployment to fund my cosplay (very little of it going on, i've got bill money and little else right now.)
My mom will sometimes buy me cosplay related things, but mostly just because in my family we're really big on buying stuff for each other. I dunno why, it's just the way my family is.

    >Well Jello, what is a Veterinary Assistant?

It's the same thing as a veterinary technician, just with less freedom and no official training. I vaccinate, help examine, bandage and treat hurt or sick animals, help out in surgery, groom, etc.

    >Please remember to get heartworm prevention for your pets guys. It really breaks my heart to see an animal die a slow, painful death like that when the pill to prevent it costs less than $20 a month.

    Drywalling/Painting as a summer job. (I'm a student).

Some times my parents and I make joint purchases of stuff we'll both use, e.g. my mom and I went 1/2 and 1/2 on a new sewing machine, and my dad bought belt sander that I use (but I had to buy the belts.)

Customer service at a paper company(which actually has more stuff like disposable utensils, plates, etc....). Full 40 hours a week, plus overtime. Better pay then my last two jobs. Also, cheap paper, utensils, plates, etc.... It makes buying stuff for the wedding next year so much cheaper.

The commute sucks since it takes me roughly an hour to get to work. But they're forgiving if I'm a little late because the freeways can be hell.
