    Hey /cgl/

What camera do you use for taking your cosplay photos?

And which camera is the best in your opinion?

Yes i am asking because i'm buying a new camera.
    >> Ukraine 05/12/11(Thu)00:47 No.4455600
Just got a canon rebel. I'm not a professional or anything but I really like it. It works for what I use it for. And I really love having a camera that takes nicer photos for cons and work.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)00:47 No.4455602
A shitty point and shoot... I hate it and I want a decent camera so badly but I cannot afford one right now.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)00:48 No.4455606
Canon Powershot. It's good enough as a point and shoot.

No idea. I'm not a photographer pro.

    NikonD5000

Of course, if you don't know how to use a DSLR properly, you might as well get a shitty point and shoot. Nothing make me more angry than seeing people get nice cameras and then using them on auto every single time they pick it up

Canon T2i. I used to use a Nikon D40, it was my first DSLR. I thought it was awesome until I tried out a friends XTi and fell in love with Canon, and proceeded to spend all my money on a T2i.

I use it for mini photoshoots at cons, with various lenses.

I have a point and shoot, and I just take cosplay photos for fun. I've only done one small photoshoot at a cosplay gathering, and the guy used a DSLR and the photos turned out very nice. No idea what kind of camera he had, I don't do photography.

OH GOD THIS. I am guilty to using auto some times, but thats just when im taking silly pictures with friends/out and about pictures that will end up in a facebook album. You dont know how many people around here think they're a pro photographer because they take a black and white picture of a leaf on the ground with their DSLR on auto.

Though on the flip side, I have a good time laughing at the people who dont know how to use their DSLR and leave it on auto, because they just wasted all their money on a camera thats too complex for them to understand.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)00:56 No.4455637
Point and shoot, it does what I want. I use it for personal photoshoots with my friends and it's not bad at all.

    This piece of shit.
I hate it so much... Half it's buttons don't function anymore and it's hard to work in manual mode because it's so slow and arranged in an annoying manner.

It's not that it's too complex... it's the fact that people are too fucking lazy to read the manual.

Protip: Camera "doesn't" matter. All is about the lenses.

Just don't buy a shitty kit with expensive camera body and cheap lense, you will regret it. It's better to buy an expensive lense, and invest less on the camera body.

For cosplay, If you are going to use it at the con, go ahead with an all-terrain lense (zoom). For example the Nikkor 18-200 VR is plain awesome. Zoom lenses are WORST than fixed focals (less quality, and worst f numbers), but you wont have to buy multiple lenses and swap between them at the con.

For photoshoots or if you are pro enough, buy a standard 50mm lense, a high focal one for nice bokehs (200mm) and if you are rich enough, some eyefish for awesome effects

Hope this helps, BTW, I Have Nikon D90 because I wasn't rich enough to buy the D300.

Avoid Auto-Mode like the plague in photoshots. It could be usefull at cons if you don't have time to set up
    >> That_Violin_Man !CXowQdGxzc 05/12/11(Thu)11:52 No.4457271
Up until last week I was using a shitty Olympus FE-330 8.0 megapixels. I honestly don't care for it because i was just using it for casual shit and I ain't no pro.

I upgraded to a Canon Powershot A2200 HD and it's not bad at all. Kinda love it.

Anyway, my friend is teaching me how to use a DSLR. I messed with it on Monday and my first mistake was leaving it on auto but he assure me he only left it on auto to teach me a lesson about not being a point-and-shoot faggot while using a DSLR and using the other options of one that is not auto.

I am gonna give it at least a year and a half until I buy a DSLR IF and ONLY IF I learn the basics of one through my friend.

Canon 5D 24-77mm 2.8. Trying to come up with some spare cash to buy the 50 mm 1.8 or 1.4 despite having shot with the 1.2 and seeing the light.

Also have a Sony NEX-3 with the stock lens and 16mm. That camera is lovely for its size.

Does anyone have any feedback on Sony's Alpha NEX series (pic related)? Thinking about getting one of those, it seems like a good balance between size and functionality. Proprietary lenses might not be the best idea in the long run but for as little photography as I actually do (basically just at cons) I think I'm okay with a limited selection.

Currently just using my old Canon A540. It does alright but fuck it's slow.

Its glorious. Get it. Interchangeable lenses, great portability, high quality HD video should you choose to record stuff. Its absolutely worth it. I'm finding myself more and more attached to my NEX-3 than my 5D.

It's an amazing camera for what it is. The ability to mount both E & A lenses really gives it an awesome selection for a new technology (with auto-focus for both). It also does incredible video that doesn't suffer from the time limits from Nikons and Canons. And the sensitivity controls on them are incredible...up to 12K iso. Granted, it will be grainy, but with some LR attention, still totally usable shots.

Can you rec Canon lenses at all? I need one that doesn't suck. All I have is the shitty kit lens (camera was a gift years ago). It takes the EF type lenses. I just have no idea what to invest in because I'm not exactly ballin'.
    >> Anonymous 05/13/11(Fri)07:18 No.4461257
Totally depends on what you wanna do with it and how much you want to spend.

Personally I find the newer Nikon D3000/5000/5500/etc series do an awesome job of packing the power of higher end Nikons (90s-300s) into a highly user-friendly form that's totally accessible for beginners but versatile and badass enough for most advanced users. Plus they do HD video (though still not at a natural 24 fps like the 5Ds) and have standard support for Vibration Reduction which I've found especially useful in the various weird lighting situations you often find yourself in shooting cosplay photos.

Good blend of power, functionality and affordability.

    Wait a sec, are you really saying you own a 5D AND a 24-70mm f/2.8 but you can't shell out 100 bucks for a 50mm f/1.8?

I'm in the same boat; except it's because I have my nikon 1.8/no autofocus/I can't be bothered getting the 50mm/1.8 canon when I'd rather get an 85mm 1.4 :) (seeing as though 50 is covered in the 24-70)

Just bought an 11-16 tokina 2.8, yay <3 wide is wide! (It vignettes on a 5D full frame though, you can punch in and it's still wide as, but I have a 7D so whatever.)

50MM F1.8 is an awesome portrait lens, and only 100 bucks. You can also consider a wide angle, and/or a Telephoto. Make sure to look up third party lenses, theyre SO much cheaper than canon and work fine. Companies to look at are Tamaron and Sigma, theyre my favorite third party lens makers. (Though, for the 50MM, go for canon. Only 100 bucks.)
