Why are nearly all Beatrice outfits I've seen really cheap looking? It's not a superhero outfit, it'd meant to be a pretty dress. There seems to be little correlation between price and quality, too, though I imagine there is some ridiculous $350 one that gets it right(which is a bit much since I could get a dress in a similar style for much less).

The colours need to be more muted. The "Black" on Beatrice's dress isn't actually jet Black, the red and gold are too bright, etc.

Are you talking about the ones for sale or the cosplays you have seen?

Either way, it's cause it takes too much money for it to be made properly.
    >> Anonymous 05/09/11(Mon)14:43 No.4444391
This Beato looks so pretty though. Yes, the red is a little too bright, but I really like the gold.

Anyway, it all the Beato's are so expensive and poorly done, why don't you demonstrate how to do it cheap and perfectly. To be blunt, Beato is fucking hard.
    >> Anonymous 05/09/11(Mon)14:43 No.4444392
I think you'll find the design doesn't help either. I've felt it always looks pretty cheap just because it's over the top and that gold piping is just yuck. It's really hard to translate well IRL, especially if you don't have the right skill and flair for materials.

I'm actually going to make a Beatrice dress for a con this summer and add my own flair to things simply BECAUSE it always looks so cheap. First of all I'm using a muted purple color fabric (it's not like BRIGHT AS FUCK purple but more of a very desaturated purple?)

The color in the anime ref sheet (before anyone has a fit-- strict VN fan here, but like it or not the anime sheet is a better reference overall) is almost a purplish brownish color, not a straight black, so that's what I'm going with.

Not really sure what I'm gonna do about the gold bits yet, any suggestions?

I agree with OP if we're talking about Beato-costumes for sale, the colors are usually to the extreme, or with some versions, very wrong. Like a few costumes where all of the black parts were DARK RED. Wat.

And the other problem lies in OP's picture: the golden parts. What the hell are they made from, they original parts don't have lace like that! /rage

Has anyone made the bow in the back of Beato's dress from the fighting game? I think that would be pretty.

Also while her dress is described as black it's always illustrated as various shades of Dark Taupe. Which is ironic because her choker is pretty much always jet black. I don't even
    >> That_Violin_Man !CXowQdGxzc 05/10/11(Tue)13:50 No.4448893
I would imagine making Victorian style dresses are hard to do, thus the poor quality in some Beato cosplay. The chick in OP's pic is cute so I guess one could get away with cosplayin' as Beato if you have a pretty face and a good figure but a somewhat poor designed dress.

Sage for the reason because I only posted here because of my fanboyism of Umineko.

Also, I know /r/ isn't really good but does cosplay of Human Beato exist? Just curious.

Beato's dress is described as black in the VN. However, if you compare her sprite to Lia's, you'll clearly see that her dress isn't, like OP pointed out, jet black, but more of a dark grey, while Lia's is actually black. And yes, the red parts aren't supposed to be bright red.

Using the anime settei as a reference is a terrible choice imho.

I'm working on this costume too, by the way.

Picture is the only Beato dress I've ever really liked, although the colors still aren't accurate.

I would say that her dress resembles more so the style and silhouette of Tudor or Elizabethan era clothing.

If you look at other pictures of dresses from that era, you will also find similar parts... some dresses have the same style sleeve, others have a much larger circumference of skirt. Check them out.

I can't decide if I like a textured/braided trim better than a flat bias tape look... both are very nice, but I think the texture/braid has the potential to look very costume like... but the bias tape is harder to apply neatly, so sloppy mistakes would be obvious.

Except using your guys' logic, no one in that series wears black. You all do realize that artist and animators will often use dark greys to signify black so they can shade and show more detail? That, and it's easier to make the shade look less harsh when you can incorporate colors from the rest of the character. It's probably susposed to be black, and you all are just a bunch of pretentious dicks.

True that, and yes, it's supposed to be black in the VN, however, it's clear from the image you posted that the dresses have different shades of black and Beato's isn't the darkest.

    >>4457119
DEEN's animation IS full of QUALITY, that's a fact.
    As for the character design.
VN readers prefer the VN art because, while far from perfect, it's highly expressive. There's a huge range of expressions for each character and the way they're used makes you feel more involved with the story as you read, even though it's just walls of text with mediocre art, which I admit to loving for these reasons.
DEEN's character design is disliked because they moefied almost every single character and often disregarded the VN's description and sprites. That, coupled with the terrible way they handled the story, made the anime a mess (it's not just 'fanboys' overreacting, the dvd sales were so ridiculous they're making new Higurashi OAVs rather than working on a Chiru anime).
I'm sorry if I sounded pretentious, but I just wanted to say that there are actual reasons as to why the anime is so hated.
