    So here's an interesting thought.

Ways to get through a con without paying for a hotel room.

seeing as I'm starting to have a need for all that money I earn outside of cons, I've been trying to figure out ways to lessen the monetary impact of going to a con without simply splitting my room between 30 people like an idiot.

I've considered sleeping in my van, since it's certainly spacious enough, but I've also considered that might be against the law or that parking garage might have rules against that.

If I want to attempt this, what should I know? Has anyone tried this? If I'm paying for a parking space anyways, shouldn't I be allowed to use my vehicle how I please?
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)11:26 No.4418277
    Most states it's illegal.
Room with others, stay at a relative's house. Or simply don't fucking go if you can't afford it.

I agree with the anon. It can get illegal. Don't risk it.

If it's an in town con, just stay at your place. If it's out of town, no one said you have to stay at the con hotel. Look for cheaper alternatives even if it means driving or walking to the con hotel.

Not that I can't afford it, I'd just like to save some money. Spending $130+ just to show up is suddenly not sitting so well with me.

If I wanted to avoid paying for a hotel all together, the other option is to just not sleep at all. Or to sneak naps in one of the screening rooms, which would probably get me in other trouble.

Either way, simply exploring alternative options.

I guess if you want to look into hostels... Not my type of thing, and they're usually grungy and very seedy...

If there is a Walmart in the area you can park your van there and sleep in it. They have some weird policy where they allow people to do that for some reason.

I could have sworn that was only for campers, I worked there for a while. But it could have been just in my state that it only allowed campers.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)11:44 No.4418313
Actually, let's take this in another direction for a moment..

Has anyone tried this and got caught? Do you know of anyone who has?

I know it's illegal and they likely do something to ensure that it doesn't happen, but I have trouble believing that they are even able to check every car parked in a 10 story parking garage, especially on a weekend when there's more than 30,000 attendees there for a single event, all coming and going at random times of day and night.

I'd assume they would first give you a slap on the wrist and get told to leave.

I've never heard personally of someone getting told to leave the vicinity at a con. But I've known people to get in trouble elsewhere for staying in their car at rest stops and garages for longer than the posted times.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)11:52 No.4418336
I've been tempted to try the parking garage thing before. I have a car with seats that fold down to extend the trunk. So if I folded down one seat I could sleep in my trunk like a little cave and no one could see me.

Sounds a little scary though and how would you take a shower?

Well, I have plenty of friends at this particular con and I figure I could negotiate 30 minutes in their bathroom on a couple days, as long as I promise to clean up, bring my own towels, and not fuck with their shit.

Rooming with them is an option, but I'm just kicking around the idea now for later events, just in case this is a viable option.

    Consider the following, Anon:
    - Where will you shower?
    - Where will you store your valuables?
    - Where will you shit?
    - Where will you park?
    - Is the cost of a possible ticket more than the cost of splitting a hotel?
    - Where will you drink copious amounts of alcohol without the possibility of being busted for impaired driving from having open liquor in your vehicle?

All very important questions, you see.

    Pic unrelated.

    >- Where will you shower?
I can borrow a friend's hotel bathroom. If need be, toss them a couple bucks or a case of soda or something.

    >- Where will you store your valuables?
In my car. Which has locks.

    >- Where will you shit?
    Most hotels have available bathrooms.

    >- Where will you park?
    Parking garage.

    >- Is the cost of a possible ticket more than the cost of splitting a hotel?
Possibly your own good question.. But no, I don't think it would be.

    >- Where will you drink copious amounts of alcohol without the possibility of being busted for impaired driving from having open liquor in your vehicle?
Well, not that I drink that much, but if need be, refer to my first answer. Other people have hotel rooms and often hold parties in them.

People mostly just do it in the South, but yeah if they have a camper they can park it in their parking lots and stay for free (the ones that allow it anyway). The person staying can pay to have electricity and they can also send in a list for groceries and the store will get them for you to pick up inside.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)12:36 No.4418445
Most good hotels also have pools. Pools must have showers. There's your answer - no need to bum off a friend's shower.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)12:43 No.4418463
Do it, OP. I believe in you.

This is starting to turn into a full blown con-hobo thread..

From what I've seen. I usually don't see hotels having seperate showers for the pools since they're suppose to be for the guests at the hotel, and the rooms have their own showers.

I do know that you can usually use the hotel laundry though(Anime Conji's hotel specifically had an area for guests to do their laundry.

I lived in an apartment complex and couldn't afford hot water for a while. I took my showers at the apartment's pool showers for 5 months. It's not that bad.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)13:04 No.4418526
    Quick idea.
You could lessen the threat of being caught by just power napping through the day.

Stay up all weekend, but take some time in between events and panels to catch a quick hour nap. Stop in the bathroom, wash your face a bit, and you'rs good to go again.

Use your van/car as a base camp.

Loading up on caffeine would also work but not in amounts that could potentially hospitalize you.
    >> Anonymous 05/03/11(Tue)14:48 No.4418842
    >>4418739
A few good power naps should keep you running just fine. Only teenaged idiots think that gorging on caffeine will allow them to stay awake all day and a night.

Seriously. Energy drinks are poison. Stick to water and fresh fruit.
