That if you don't make it yourself then you aren't actually participating in cosplay.

Apparently this is elitism though and not just common sense.

YES THANK YOU! I was at tora-con and people where entering the costume judging who bought their costumes.
I also get pissed because I always cosplay with the same people and they get their costumes professionally made and I make my own, none the less im outshone.

Yeah, because getting into cosplay isn't cosplay, SEWING is cosplay!

I mean, seriously! Why use a computer if you didn't make it yourself from spare parts? Helloooo, that's not actually using a computer.

Apparently this is elitism and not just common sense.

Why? I consider myself a cosplayer and I've only made a few costumes from scratch, the rest are bought, commissioned, or modified.

I think wearing a costume for cosplay is cosplay regardless of if you made it yourself or not.
You shouldn't enter it in contests though.

I believe there are 3 purposes for people to attend a convention.
A.) For attention - be it dramu, be it dressing in a certain way to attract attention (both showing skin or dressing sparkly, or just having an outstanding costume)
B.) For praise- those who work hours and hours on their crafting and sewing machines so they can get complimented and told how great their efforts are. (same for skits, earning praise for their work)
C.) Sex- essentially a club for nerds, go to a club to chat up the opposite sex and either get a contact info, or go back to a room and sex.

Each are generalizations, but most things and reasons can be fit into those.

Meanwhile no surprise this quickly turned into a 'Who is or isn't a cosplayer' thread

If I had to pick three reasons that people cosplay I'd say it's more like
    1) To meet new people and make friends with similar interests.
    2) For the positive attention one receives when wearing a costume that's popular with congoers.
3)They love a character/series and want to bring it to life.

No one I know cosplays to have sex with other congoers, that's funny in the story threads but fucking gross in reality.

I'm sorry but buying cosplay is like saying you are a baker and then using a box cake mix. Just because you put it in an oven and add eggs, that doesn't mean you are actually a baker.

If you can do the same thing as a mannequin in a department store then you aren't actually participating in a hobby.

This. I have nothing against closet cosplay if you do it well--I did closet cosplay this weekend at AB myself and was easily recognized as my character by the series' fans--but unless you're in a group skit where the acting/idea is what's being judged, don't fucking enter a cosplay contest. Even if your bff made the costume, I don't think you should do it. Win a prize on your own efforts.

No, buying cosplay and claiming you made it yourself is like that. If you buy it and admit that you didn't make it, what's the big fucking deal?

    Ah...I see...
Well we both agree on the attention aspect. As for making friends, I wrote a paragraph on it because I knew someone would bring it up, but I deleted it. I based my purposes solely on the aspect of doing it for self(ish) reasons.
Making friends can add value to your life, providing opportunities and value to help the individual to get what they want in life (including happiness, or the attention of others, or material gain, or people to fill slots for certain activities that you cannot do alone) I agree, so I'll say you're right on that.

As for the sex thing, I've done it, it's why I went to cons before I met my girlfriend there. Lots of people are sexually liberal at cons.
I know a number of guys who do that, and a couple of women too.
Your response leads me to believe you're sexually inexperienced, or experienced but not that adventurous. I'm not saying that for arrogant reasons or just to criticize, but it's a fact and a truth for some who are aware of it, and just not for those who aren't.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)21:16 No.4391974
Cosplay can be a lot cheaper if you've got the time to research all your material options and wait for sales and such. Mind you its still not the cheapest hobby out there after hotel, gas/plane, reg, food on top of costume.

My view is that hot chicks don't have to put much effort into their costumes because they'll get a ton of attention and praise anyway. The girls who have a couple things off about their features or are overweight that have to put real skill and effort into what they make to turn heads. And if you're hot and can make stuff well then even more power to ya.

I'm not counting the fangirls and their unbound chests cosplaying male characters and making out with each other of course.

You're probably still in high school. Once I graduated and started going to cons with college friends I found there's plenty of people that go mostly to drink and score. We still make fun of one guy who took over the hotel room with some ridiculous hambeast

I don't get why you people are so upset about the "he/she didn't sew their costume" . Some people don't have manual skills to sew, or don't have the time for it, but still want to cosplay. I mean, they still work their asses to pay the seamestress, or the guy who made their props, don't they? So I have to be a 24/7 dedicated-to-cosplay person so it's valid that I dress up as characters and want to go in contests?

Not >>4391853, but just curious, when is the last time either of you had a full STD test? You generally don't get them at your well woman's exams/ physical unless you ask for them. When is the last time you asked for one? You don't ask, you don't get.

Nothing wrong with being sexually adventurous and experienced, but be aware that adventure has dangers. Here are some links showing those dangers, and some actual facts.
