    It approaches.

    Who's going? Bothering to cosplay?
What events are you looking forward to? (Because I'm kind of going in blind)
    >> Anonymous 03/07/11(Mon)11:32 No.4212935
I'm going! I kinda have to cosplay since I'm gonna be in the Pokemon League. Same costume all weekend, though, so I'm not worrying about getting my cosplay done. I've never been before, what's it like? How does it differ from an anime convention?
    >> Oshi !pkMVShM4AY 03/07/11(Mon)12:24 No.4213051
    >>4212935
It's actually a lot more like an anime con than most gaming cons, I think. Except gaming-centric. You've got your big-ass dealers room with major industry presence, you've got your panel theaters, you've got multiple gaming rooms, nightly concerts and other main events...
PAX is the perfect blend of industry con like E3, and fan con like anime cons.
    >> Anonymous 03/07/11(Mon)12:32 No.4213063
    >>4213051

PAXEast feels a lot like how anime cons felt 6 years ago. Before every 12 year old got their moms to drop them off and leave them alone for the weekend.

The people running things are genuinely invested in having people leave with positive thoughs on their product, the panelists actually have interesting things to say rather than (I love this show! Do you love it too? that's what I thought!), the main show floor actually has things that people haven't seen before rather than things that came out months ago that everyone is already tired of.

I'll tell you this much though. Wear something simple. If you're planning on dressing up in your huge fucking super elaborate cosplays in efforts to have everyone fawn over you, you're not going to get that. I feel like people got dupped by ACP's Deathsmiles booth last year, thinking they were going to be part of some big cosplayer gathering, and in the end ended up being boothbabes that didn't have to be paid.

Go to have fun, not to be an attention whore. Unlike most anime cons, there's actually a lot to do.
    >> Anonymous 03/07/11(Mon)13:53 No.4213248
PAX East was the shit last year. It's gonna be even bigger this year. Cosplay is found in 1.5% of the population, though. You're a rarity but common enough.

Thing is, there is SO MUCH TO DO... and it's actually good. At anime cons, I hang out at the hotel most of the time with my buddies or just people watch. Pax actually has entertainment and swag everywhere. Prepare for a real con with real fun.

I second the "don't expect people to fawn over you" thing

having been to PAX East last year in cosplay, most people who do recognize you (I was Neku from TWEWY) will go "oh cool!" or "I love that game!" and keep walking.
A handful will ask for pictures.
If you're AMAZING you may get more pictures taken.
But for the most part, 90% or more people are in normal clothing doing normal gaming stuff, so don't cosplay unless it's merely for your own enjoyment.
It's not really an anime thing, so I wouldn't suggest wearing an anime outfit. Make sure it's from a video game (like other here have said, it's game-gentric. it's video games, tabletops, and penny-arcade (and some other comics) so that's pretty much the audience)

That being said, hope to see you all there! It should be amazing. The schedule is impressive! (a convention where the panels are worth going to!? a convention where you aren't just standing in the halls waiting 3 hours for that one voice actor panel you kinda maybe want to go to cause your friends are going!? a convention where you feel like a group of friends and not a bunch of strangers thrown together randomly!? a DRAMA FREE CONVENTION!? IT'S TRUE! xD)

I'll be Tycho and Scholar all weekend. Saturday, if you see me around as Tycho, stop me to play Poker! I'll have my cards on me!!! (especially if you're a Heavy Weapons Guy! HA!)

If you see a Lady Hawke from DA2 wandering around PAX East wearing sunglasses saying that she is a level 100 Warlock assassin hired by the pope with the blood of a tiger in her, that will probably be me.

The problem I had last year, yeah there's a ton of good panels to go to, but lines, man, lines everywhere. Hopefully that'll change this year with bigger rooms, but last year I only got into one of six events I really wanted to attend (the Harmonix panel). The last one I wanted to, the line cut off five people in front of me.

Either way, shit was a blast. I don't even remember if I cosplayed. This year I'm just bringing Quote (Cave Story), as it is light and easy.

Got it! I'm not wearing anything super elaborate- it's Maylene from Pokemon. I'm pretty much dressed up so I can be a Gym Leader in the Pokemon League that's happening this year. I heard that PAX wasn't as big on cosplay as anime cons, so I chose a simple Gym Leader to do. Thanks guys!

I'll be there. I've got Tali, Commander Shepard and Mordin Solus in my group.

The photograph thing definitely varies from person to person though. Last year I was in the group of girls with the Pyramid Head cosplayer, and despite the fact that besides hers all of our costumes were pretty meh, we could barely go ten feet without being stopped at some points. My friend actually timed it once, it took us 45 minutes to get across a hallway. We liked getting so much recognition, but if that's the kind of thing that tires you out be warned.

(also incredibly excited about this year ashakgsha)

I got a ticket for only Sunday, which is awesome because my spring break is next week. Anyone want to hang out?

If anybody in this thread is 21 or older I would love to go out for some drinks and bitch about Pixyteri.

Good ol' Boston, where the Sam Adams flows like water. Lets.

    The sad thing is that the convention is so big, I doubt we will ever actually meet. ;_;

Speaking of Holly, for somebody who makes such nice costumes, she is really terrible with the whole wig and makeup thing. The costume really is fantastic though.

Dude, that's what this thread is for.

Sam Adams is commonplace, I've always wanted to go to Boston Beer Works, can we schedule a meetup there?
The nearest one to the convention is out of walking distance though, do either of you mind riding the subway or would you prefer some place closer?
    >> Anonymous 03/08/11(Tue)14:46 No.4217011
    >>4217001
Probably some place closer, if that is alright. We are flying in and we don't have a car.
    >> Whiteboy 03/08/11(Tue)14:52 No.4217029
    >>4217011
Well, the place I suggested has a location just across the street from a big subway/train station. Would you still prefer a place closer?
    >> Anonymous 03/08/11(Tue)14:54 No.4217035
    >>4217029
Normally it wouldn't, but my biggest concern is navigating the subway system in a city I've never been to before while slightly drunk.

I live just north of Boston though, I'm familiar with the subways and I could help you back

    >>4217041
That is sweet of you, but the more I think I about it, the less I want to go through with it (I am lame as hell), mostly because the other people in my party would look at me like I am crazy if I told them that we were all going to get drunk with somebody I talked to on 4chan (they are lame as hell too).

If I do meet you at the convention though, I will totally apologize for being a crazy flake in person.

Nononono, it's fine, can we still meet up at a bar near the convention though? Also, I'm only there for Sunday, but I can definitely rationalize travelling out on Saturday night.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/11(Tue)15:13 No.4217101
    >>4217092
Sure. Saturday night I don't think we are doing anything. We can totally meet up some place by the convention center and drink and talk about video games. Just say when and where.

Take your pick, Drink looks tempting but I worry it's too far away (pretty sure that area is a divided street, crossing it is possible but a little scary)
