The Gaylord is a beautiful hotel, with lots of really amazing places for pictures. The panels are hard to find, but just ask staff. So far everyone has been really well behaved too. Let's see if that holds up at the Hetalia wedding tomorrow.

This is Katsucon in a nutshell so far

There are a bunch of douches on floor 6 breaking exit signs and tossing food on the floor.

I am currently sitting on the floor of my hotel room. I "crashed" the Pirates vs Ninjas dance off. Beasted the ever living shit out of kids at MVC 3, and made tons of friends and met a lot of great people as I walked the halls of my first ever east coast con. I'm having a great time!

Got the name wrong but it does got those two word in it. It the first I thought when waiting in line was how sad this looked. First they got all the girl to line up to the front first, after they did that, they saw how the guy out number the girl 4:1. After all the girl went in, then they finally let the guy in (too many guy so I think they didnt let every guy in) which made us sit down in row across from the girl. Talk for 5 min then move right. This place smells like fish, the smell is mostly coming from the main hallway where registration is. What the hell ladies, the Gaylord has plenty of bathrooms where you can freshen up at. There's also a CVS so there is no excuses for males or females to stay fresh in some kinda way.

I skipped out on the masq. Saw the BRILLIANT ACTING for five minutes, then went back to waiting for DJ Cutman. A damn shame, because I may have missed Jiminy Cricket because of it.

Katsucon usually has a really good masq. People bring their A Game. But this year was terrible. It's like no one tried at all. There were a couple good skits, and some walk ons that were a waste of time.

The skit vs walk-on thing was waaaay badly pulled off. You registered as one or the other, but there was no actual difference between the two. Everywhere else I've been there's some background music and you just walk the stage, pose, exit, and all of the walk-ons are together, right? Apparently here you were to provide your own audio, could use the microphone, didn't have any stated time limit, and there was no announcing difference between skits and walk-ons. Frankly I was a little embarrassed just randomly walking out and leaving between two actual skits. It just felt overly pretentious, y'know? "Hey, these guys actually put something together, I'm just taking up a skit slot to walk across the stage. Woooo." Not what I was going for.

Before that, I was told to show up for rehearsal at 8 in the morning, waited for 20 minutes with everyone else before asking the staff what I needed to be there for in the first place, no one's really sure, everyone asks around "Oh, hey, guess you didn't actually need to be here!" ...Thanks, bro.

Greenroom was nice and open, we got snacks and plenty of water so no complaints there. Staff was friendly and accommodating... A few too many stairs *shudders*

Dude, great con. First time on the East Coast, and I gotta say it was a totally different experience. Lots of stairs and walking, which was fun. The exploration of a new place was cool. And it really helped that at night I swear I was in the Citadal from Mass Effect. There was some really great cosplay, and the company that I kept was nothing less than stellar. Ended up hanging out with Decade, Iris, Torii and 4ng31 a lot, got to party, and met a lot of people that I thought I'd never get to meet in real life. Disappointed at the snow. Or lack there of, totally was stoked for cold weather, get told the day before "Naw bro, it's gonna be sunny". Rage ensued. Game room was a bit weird, the audio sucked and the issue with the lights and projectors was pretty frustrating. Plus it was linked to the same room as the "rave". You guys need to play something other than Sandstorm. I literally heard Sandstorm, a small jab of a song between, and it got comboed back into Sandstorm. Sandstorm, guys? Not a fan of the rave scene, and that's all this was. Though if you guys ever get the chance, listen to DJ Cutman, he's fuckin' boss. Other than that, it was a pretty amazing con, had fun pretty much the whole time, and will definitely be back for another con, if not Katsucon again!

Katsucon was fucking awesome. For some reason, I was going in to expect the usual "Katsucon Ultrastrict Security" policies of the past but ...nada. And the crowd was more disciplined than I came to expected. Met up with old friends made new ones...also got to meet up with Maguma and Wes (btw Maguma is awesome despite having the worst case of ADD I've ever seen in my life) also didn't know I ran into Erisaka and other cgl people.

Only low point was the wind....It kinda ruined my Russia cosplay (making me lose the medal of it)...which I gave up on...which I actually saw as a blessing in disguise in the end.

My Kohta was awesome...hopefully I can come next year.

Katsucon was my first con and it was fun as hell. Will definitely come back for next year. I have some random questions though. If I just want to cosplay and meet people, is there really any point to paying for registration? I didn't really go to any of the panels or the events. I hung out in the dealers room and the gaming room but that's about it, don't really think it was worth the $35. Are other cons like this? Can I just show up, walk around without registering?

Also, is it weird if I'm cosplaying a character from one series and I ask to get my picture taken with characters from a totally unrelated series?

if you really just want to wander around the hotel and dont actually want to go to any panels/events/the dealers room then no you dont need a badge. i know a bunch of people who didnt even bother with one this year; the parts of the hotel that arent actually hosting events are basically "public space" (for lack of a better term) so the con cant throw you out if you dont have a badge.

as for other cons like that im not sure; i think it really depends on the layout of the con itself. like when katsu was still in crystal city you wouldve needed a badge to do anything other than mill around in the tiny hotel lobby since they were checking badges at the escalators, but at the gaylord thats obviously not the case.

at otakon you cant get into the bcc at all without a badge since they check at all the entraces, and thats where 99% of the con is. unless you just want to stand around outside the entrance in the baltimore heat all weekend youre definitely gonna want a badge.

It seems to me like they didn't have quite enough awards for the amount of entrants. A handful of Honorable Mentions, four Judge's Awards, Best Of each class and Best of Weekend.

With over 70 entrants, they could have at least done two of each Best Of Class awards, one for each day. I mean, there were a LOT of good entries that went unmentioned. Heard from a judge they had a couple "Wait, shit, we didn't give anything to ____?!" moments.

First time at Katsu! Super fun times.

my highlights:
-photo shoot with fem-croc in Alabasta garb. Instant fall-in-love-deska
-hanging with melvin and friends!
-meeting big wes, decade, and hanging with Maguma
-hotel being freaking gorgeous
-my Giovanni got a lot of good attention!
-cosmode jap girl took pics of my Croc and got really excited about it
-met some cool photographers and networked a bit

some things that were not so nice:
-the formal dance in a big open shared room with the game room? that was really disappointing
-the crazy wind

some personal probs:
-my kojuro outfit had some problems and had to work on it a couple of hours in hotel! and also hard to move in. Ended up only wearing it an hour or two
-my Croc hook got dented/cracked on the trip, so i spent all day thursday working on it instead of chilling -_-

WILL DO Katsu again though, its amazing~

I agree, each year it seems like they get enough entries every year to have 2 "best of class" awards. I think it would make it easier for the judges to pick their 2 favorites per class. I also expected to see a lot more honorable mentions etc. because as you say, there was some totally ballin' stuff there.

I like the judges this year: they were friendly, easy to talk with, and encouraging since I was very nervous. Last year I competed on Saturday and was the 5th person to go but they acted so disinterested like they already had seen what they wanted on Friday and couldn't be arsed to even seriously look at Saturday's entries, which seemed really illogical to me. I know a lot of people, myself included, save big costumes for Saturday.

Went to Katsucon for the first time this year and it was pretty fantastic. Finally got some decent photos of my Raven (Teen Titans) cosplay and people recognized my Humanoid! Marie (Aristocats) cosplay. <3
I also got to meet some new friends, catch up with old ones, and have many silly times.

I did not appreciate those strong winds on Saturday though. Epically after walking through it to my friends car only to find out it was dead. On the up side I now know how to jump a car.
And what was up with the dances being in the same place as the game room? Makes absolutely no sense.

The set up of the dealers hall, Game room, and "Dance" as a whole seemed very bad. I'm sure they had far more space to use like say the hall for where registration was. TONS OF SPACE for things to happen in there that wasn't utilized or heck putting the dance in the same hall as the masquerade. ALA does that and it's child's play to move all the chairs into the corners and set up the dance in there. Literal child's play.

As soon as I heard Sandstorm, I couldn't GTFO of there fast enough. I heard Cutman was holding one of his trademark secret raves, too. So much disappoint. At least Jiminy Cricket and the guy before her were good.

Cosplay Comedian Joe was the funniest guy ever.

As far as hanging out with people I had a blast hanging with Soni and 4ng quite a few times was the most fun I tended to have. Other than that I went to an awesome room party and met some really cool people. Only wore the attatched picture the whole con, and got pretty much no photos that I can find. I got stopped but I can find nothing.

Meeting Maguma in person was pretty cool. And Wes was a super bro.
All in all? Fun con.

I also agree about the retarded use of space. Sometimes I get irritated when dealer's rooms are set up so that you have to work your way through every area to get to the exit, it is nice because you can see everything. I felt bad for the AA folks crammed at the front of the room which was easy to walk past and harder to get back to. I don't quite get why the setup was such that you couldn't use the other set of doors to the same room as an exit. It was pointless to exit from the back of the room and cut through another room. The back of the registration room seemed like a lot of wasted space too.

Also, what was the reason behind the hour delay for pre-reg pickup on Thursday? I never heard what the reason was, but jokingly thought it was because it took those PC towers that long to boot and be ready for use.

Man, there are so many things I wish I could have said when I was talking to one of their guest relations staff members. This lady came up to me and asked me why I wasn't enjoying my time (not to say that I actually wasn't, but there was nothing that was drawing my attention event wise thus I either was in the game room or wandering about with friends). The masquerade hall would have been perfect for the dance, raised stage for the DJs to work. Tons of space for attendees to party at.

I was also not so happy with everyone just up and leaving during the judging of the masquerade. It was such a bummer to see all these people just up and leave after they were entertained by people who put together/summed up the courage/stepped up to the plate and put on a show for them. And they all just go after it's done. Bad masq or not I felt that was pretty rude :\

I really wanna come back and come up with something really powerful. Put some spark back in this thing!

There were some notable things: The Daft Punk Cosplay. Excellent. Bender. Nice job (saw playing DDR which was a riot). The 6th floor fiasco. Not cool. Pre-Reg losing peoples Registration. What a freaking Joke. Amateur at best. SO disorganized. Other then that, the crowd was very copacetic.

Prize Award: To EVERYONE because not once had I heard anything about "the game". Fucking finally that bullshit is over (and Yes I saw the sign on the balcony and even then, not a word).

That's actually really normal for most cons. Audience doesn't care who wins or loses, they're just there for entertainment and then after they complain about the show not being entertaining enough.

I think the con itself was really poorly laid out. Almost impossible to find the panels.

Saw a lot of really good costumes though. A couple of Ezios and some Borderlands.

One of the Moxxis was being a total whore to another cosplayer in a hallway though. We were behind her and a friend as she essentially insulted this Lilith/Moxxi cosplay pair. Really pissed me off to see people with common interests being such a bag of dicks.

I'll admit, while it's normal for a bit of the crowd to leave, it's usually not THAT many people... I agree it was a bit disrespectful.

I cosplayed for the first time and came up with a few resolutions.

- Never look in the bathroom mirror, think "Hey my skin is being unshiny today," and walk out without powder.
- When in doubt between two fabrics, choose the saturated one that will actually film well.
- Put Dr. Scholl's inserts in all cosplay footwear.
- Think of more than one pose ahead of time.

My cosplay was lolawful but it was still a lot of fun.

Glad to hear about good times, enjoyed seeing everyone making use of the space for photo ops. Especially Friday out on the rocks and docks, soooo warm for February.

Panels and workshops were all up on the panel and workshop sized room floor, most I saw were well attended. Lots of the empty rooms were taken up through Friday night or starting early Sunday afternoon by other events.

Dealers room flow was screwy, you COULD walk out through the second front doors but they weren't marked, no direction signs anywhere.

Ackson's "style" is just very appealing. I don't think this is "trying to be like Ackson" as much as it possibly just has some influence from him in it. A lot of con videos look very similar because there's only so many ways you can shoot a good con video.

However, the music was fucking terrible and really slapped on. It's obvious that whoever made the vid edited the footage first and slapped in a song last second. It has very little cohesion to what's on the screen--poor timing, etc.

Keep in mind that Ackson started off by copying the Japanese gravure idol videos, which are basically erotica videos. What made it possible was a steadcam rig, which is not cheap. Handheld video just doesn't cut it. I saw guys with rigs at katsu. They'll probably do pretty much the same thing.

He had a pretty good idea, but it's nothing new. It's also pretty short. A whole weekend and you get a minute or two of video? He's got practice on how to make a good con video this way, but soon enough everybody is going to do that. Then we'll see if there's anything more to this kind of video than just novelty.

I feel Ackson loses something by doing "same day edits", too. Yeah, having an edit out immediately after is great..but if you have all of the time in the world with no professional deadline, why rush it? Put out a same day edit and then go back and make one really nice mastervid of the con.

From what I've seen of Ackson, however, it doesn't seem like he shoots enough footage to do more than 3-4 minute videos. I get the feeling he shoots a half dozen or so groups of cosplayers and then edits his footage together. If he had anything more than a 3-4 minute video with the footage he captures, you'd get really bored because it'd be 30-40 seconds of the same costuming group. Unless they're SPECTACULAR, that's a really long time.

And yeah, most stuff shot with steadycam rigs IMHO will look very similar. Ackson's impressive considering what he does and his style (modeled after erotica or not) is still distinctive. I like it and I've tried a few Ackson-style shots in my own footage and liked it, but part of me just wonders if that's because it's very hard to truly fuck up shots like he does.

I feel his shots probably make it a lot easier to edit, too, because he can just go from sweeping movement/slow-mo to sweeping movement/slow-mo.

But I'm a total novice myself so I don't know shit.

If you don't know anything about proper video production, you're going to miss the camera and editing "tricks" he uses to make his videos work. You say it's probably easy to edit because of how he shoots well...no shit...you're never supposed to go into a video project blind. You ever hear of these things called story-boards? Same idea.

The guy has talent and I love watching this shit (I honestly think his selections are fantastic; the documentary style shots in which it seems like fantasy but then you realize he's on an elevator and it snaps you back into reality...but only briefly, as to not ruin the illusion and like shots). Like I said, if you're untrained, you'll never notice this type of stuff, but I really appreciate it. And most of all, they're fun to watch...they have a feel-good vibe...and that's something that this hobby needs more of. Fun.
