Either way, the backlash seems disproportionately large. Yes, the heils at Anime Boston - and if any swastika armbands in the Nazi fashion were sold, that's in similar poor taste although I think the buddhists and hinduists (among others) deserve to have their symbol back.

But in all honesty, I think some of the backlash is from members of the previous "trouble" fandoms - Kingdom Hearts, Harry Potter, Death Note (to a lesser extent), and the like. In their view, they have outgrown their fangirlish ways (or not) and now feel the need to distance themselves from their old years of squealing, screaming immaturity. What better way to do so than to rip into the current problem child? "I was never THAT bad." Hey. When you're in the middle of something, it's probably hard to get an objective view. Because I sat through those shit-storms. Harry Potter was a veritable goldmine for Fandom Wank, as I'm sure Hetalia is now.

Meet the new shit-fandom, same as the old shit-fandom. Unless something happens to you personally, I don't see a reason to get too up-in-arms about it (aforementioned Heils and the like excluded).

Even in series that people RAGE about saying there are NO undertones at all.

Take Naruto...it's a PRIME example. Yaoi fangirls go crazy over the supposed 'construed by their own imagination' pairings. And while yes, the actual parings themselves are not canon whatsoever there are blatant undertones. Even Kishimoto admits to this. He ADMITS that he put the undertones in there because he knew it would sell...

The whole thing that IS rage worthy is how obsessive these girls can be about it.
