Dodge and burn are tools in photoshop to edit pictures and a majority of people with basic editing skills seem to think using them automatically makes their picture better. I'd also really like to see what other pictures you're comparing their skills to, because in OP's picture and the pictures posted throughout this thread it's incredibly clear they're doing a pretty shoody job at this "dodge and burn" style you're talking about.

If someone is posting to an art community like Deviantart then they can expect critique. People are going to say what they think about you regardless of if you ask for it or not. They process hundreds of high end images daily. 90% of them have used dodge and burn as well as blur. Go look at victoria secret models, posters of rock stars/movie stars. ALL of them have been treated with dodge/burn as well as blur.

the majority of 4channers who waste their time bashing cosplayers on /cgl/ just have no life and no self worth, it's simple psychology. put someone down to pick yourself up. i don't deny that their are other people out there who are possibly attractive who hide behind an anonymous name, but why hide behind anonymity if you don't have anything to hide? I got nothing to hide and I'll admit, I'm overweight, I'm not as bad as some others I've seen on the internet, but I don't judge. Just because they're overweight (or even obese) doesn't mean they're bad cosplayers. Some have issues like hypothyroidism or PCOS that make it hard for them to lose weight.
