Does /cgl/ like to read? It seems that most con-goers aren't interested in books as much as comics or manga. What was the last book you read and what are your top five books?

Last book I read in completion was the latest book in the Malazan series.

Not into literature literature much at all, especially the sort of pretentious assholes that insist it has to have some deep allegorical meaning. I read philosophy/history shit for DEEP MEANINGS and then I read fantasy novels for entertainment.

Never saw the issue with reading blatantly escapist literature. I loathe reading anything that I'll be expected to be able to extract a deep societal commentary from.

Which means I don't read the early modern stuff. Not to mention it's mostly just boring.

Though Dostoevsky and Kafka are two exceptions.

It touched on some interesting philosophy. And felt honest in how it presented itself. I personally think the first half of the book was much better than the second half. I would recommend it, good book.

currently reading Good Omens...finally. I've had it for a couple of years and it's always been pick up, have to stop and then forget, pick it up again, etc. About halfway done and enjoying it very much.

Top 5 books...hmm...I'll get back to you on that.

I'm currently trying to get through "The Sun Rises Also" by Hemingway but for some reason I just can't find the motivation.

    - Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
    - Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
    - The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice (I don't know why, really... I just have great memories of this book)
    - Iliad by Homer
    - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (once again, great memories..)

yep. There's so many books I've started but haven't finished for one reason or another...

I feel ashamed that I don't read more often.
The last book I read was Freak Show by James St. James. It was adorable and I love the way it's written.

Good Omens, Neuromancer, The Wanting Seed, The Life of Pi are some of the other books I make sure stay with me.

Ya know, /lit/ is that way >...

I hardly read manga or watch anime these days. I do read a fair amount of comics, but not as much as I read books. I just finished reading Jurassic Park this morning. The little girl was possibly the most annoying character I've ever encountered in a book. My top five would be tricky to pick out since there are a few series I really like. But I guess it would be something like this:

    -Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman
    -Stardust, Neil Gaiman
-The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
-Discworld series(I've got about thirty of these books, please don't make me pick just one), Terry Pratchett
-having problems picking a fifth, something by Jacqueline Carey or G.R.R. Martin.

Despite loving the films to death, I will always argue that the books are somehow far better than even the first movie was.

While I don't think it necessarily excuses off-topic threads like this, /lit/ is both extremely hateful of anything fantasy or science fiction, and a steaming shitpile.

    Favorite books:

    1. The Stolen Child
    2. Neverwhere
    3. Interview With the Vampire
    4. The Thief Lord
    5. Animal Farm

Eh, I used to read a whole lot, but lately I've been running out of books at my shitty local library. I'm down to teen fiction now because I've ready everything worth reading.

currently reading "carbon dreams" by susan gaines (about climate change research in the early 80s...the main character is based off a colleague so i figured why not?)

    last read:
"the last oracle" - james rollins
    "autumn bridge" - takashi matsuoka
a bodice ripper...i think it was "kiss of the highlander"?
some other james rollins and clive cussler books

i tend to read light stuff since i have to read/analyze science papers a lot at work....so it's nice to have a nice easy read for funtimes. also adventure novels are always fun.

You kidding I love to read books, more then manga or comics.

As for the last book I read it was called "The United States of Atlantis".

And since I have trouble choosing favorite books out of series I just list the series that I like.
-The "Honor Harrington" series by David Weber
-The "Ender's Game" Series by Orson Scott Card
-The "Dragonlance" Series by Weis and Hickman
-The "Redwall" Series by Brian Jacques
-And the only single book on this list "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett
    >> Anonymous 01/23/11(Sun)03:09 No.4039706
My favorites, in no particular order:

    - "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire
    - "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger
    - "Paper Towns" by John Green
    - "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka
    - "World War Z" by Max Brooks

no, it does not excuse this ridiculous, not even remotely topical thread.
    and
    >/lit/ is both extremely hateful of anything fantasy or science fiction, and a steaming shitpile.
/lit/ has excellent taste in sci-fi and quite a good knowledge of it.
they also don't have the taste of fucking middle-schoolers, which seems to be where this board rests.
right now it is a shitpile due to arcanine and newsies flooding it with their bullshit.

but seriously, whenever seagulls give their taste in anime, literature, music, it is always embarrassing. To Kill a Mockingbird? The Giver? Anne fucking Rice novels? aren't some of you kids in college? jesus.

What the hell is wrong with people wanting to talk about books they like? Yeah, I don't think it should be on this board, but your bullshit attitude toward anything not "mature" enough is exactly the reason these people don't want to post on /lit/ any more.

    >>4040095
There's a difference between liking something and having it in your top 5 books of all time. I like all of those books, I think they were very good for what they were, but what they were is books for people below a High School level. If you honestly think that The Giver was better than Naked Lunch, I mean, what the fuck are you on about?
    >> Anonymous 01/23/11(Sun)06:47 No.4040125
    >>4040108
I'm not going to argue about other peoples taste in reading, because frankly I probably would not have picked most of the books mentioned in this thread as my top 5, either.
What I'm getting at is that being a judgmental prick about what people like to read while claiming /lit/ has "excellent taste" is not going to convince people to move this topic to the proper board. It's going to do the opposite of that.
    >> Anonymous 01/23/11(Sun)07:28 No.4040163
    >>4040125
that's what boards are for, man. /lit/ is going to be judgemental about literature, if it was just people going "well, I disagree but I respect your opinion" there wouldn't be much to talk about.

/cgl/ is really picky about cosplay and lolita, to an extent that most people probably wouldn't care about/be able to recognize. boards are picky about their central topic, always have been, always will be. that doesn't preclude good taste--in fact, it often implies it.
    >> Anonymous 01/23/11(Sun)09:34 No.4040281

I don't know about everyone else, but I pick my top books by what I enjoy the most and like to reread.
