The good, the adorable, and the funny

We always have "con horror stories" and threads about weeaboos, so I propose a thread and the positive side of cons.

the reasons that you keep going back.

My 11 year old sister's face lit up everytime she saw Avatar cosplayers at AB.
She gave one Zuko a hug and bought a little Appa plush at the artist ally.

    >not cosplaying
    >sitting with some friends in the lobby, chilling and pointing out cosplays we knew
    >fucking amazing jack sparrow cosplayer comes in, her seriously walks, talks, and looks like depp
    >little three year old boy who was sitting with him mom nearby jumps up and runs over to him
    >stands about 5 feet away out of shyness and yells "jack!!"
    >jack sparrow turns around, little boy waves
    >he waves back in a very in-character manner
    >turns around and walks past us with the biggest grin ever on his face

i know it's not animu related, but it's things like this, seagulls, that make me love conventions.

I love talking to the artist in the artist alley.
Some times you might walk past a booth because the art isn't the best, and they don't have much, but if you just stop and take an interest in their stuff and just talk with them, allot of the times they are the nicest people on earth.

I sort of got to meet Chris Patton this year. He's a genuinely nice, very funny guy. It's too bad he won't be going to cons any more.

Sorta related. I wasn't around to witness this, but my tablemate was, and I saw them later.

    >AWA
    >Mei and Zuko walking along
    >Mei has a bigass lolipop- the all-day kind
    >It falls and shatters to the floor.
    >Mei crosses her arms, stomps her foot and says, "OH MY GOD. WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME. MY LIFE SUCKS."
    >Zuko crouches to get the fallen pieces to offer to her
    >"I DON'T EVEN WANT IT ANYMORE. GOD. THE ENTIRE WORLD SUCKS."
    >They walk away arm-in-arm.

Later, they came by with their stepdad, who was an age-appropriate, size-appropriate, VOICE APPROPRIATE IROH. He asked if we had Jasmine Tea. I died.

This just happened right after my group of friends left NYCC on Saturday, and it was amazing.
So me and a group of six plus two onlookers nearby are trying to flag down a taxi. A limo pulls up. All of us are like "uhh, we can't afford this." The guy says, "how many?" We tell him we have about seven people. He cocks his head and says "thirty dollars for seven people."

Oh god, Copycat in Saffron City. Adorable.

Pic related to one of mine, I kind of always wanted a kid getting a picture with me but most of my costumes aren't appreciated by the younger crowd, as it were. But apparently this kid loved Metroid and though he was really shy, he wanted a picture.
    Ffffffadorable.
It also gives me the warm n fuzzies when I'm cosplaying from something obscure but someone who really likes the series recognizes me. I remember doing that to some Disgaea cosplayers at a small con; apparently I was the only one that instantly recognized them that day.
Does anyone remember the tiny Chun Li from AX 2009? So sweet she gave me diabetes.

DragonCon this year. I was cosplaying Zuko from Avatar. Two little boys (like 7 and 10) come running up and ask for pictures. They were so excited and bouncing around complimenting me. Felt really good. Then they ask for a hug but instead I did the proper bow. They once again got really excited and bowed back. It felt so good.

That must have been so satisfying.

My favourite heartwarming con moment so far has been outside a small con, about a block away. A forty-or-so-year-old woman came up to me as we were walking towards the location with a massive grin on her face and told me she loved my Scarlet Witch costume. She looked like your average mum (had a couple of kids with her), nothing particularly nerdy about her, it caught me completely off guard and gave me a good fuzzy feeling for the rest of the day.

I also met these guys (pic related), which wasn't so much heartwarming as fucking sweet and completely unexpected.

The same con, my boyfriend was Wolverine and had SO MANY PICTURES with dads and their kids, it was awesome. Also had a few screams of 'PIKACHU!' from some very young kids, which was equally adorable.

One of the special guests 2 years ago was the actor who played Bulk (from the power rangers). We were walking down the hall to get to our hotel room when he opens the door, looks down at the floor and sees someone's room service dishes piled up. There's a cake pan with half a slice of cake still on it. He looks at all of us and says "There's evidence of cakery afoot!" and then retreated back to his room. Very silly wtf moment, and we had a good chuckle. Later that night, there were 2 guys having an argument in the lobby, and he walks up to them and says in his best mortal kombat voice "Fight!" Thanks Bulk for all the laughs!

    Dragon*Con 2007
    1) First day there I didn't feel like being in costume so I wore a plaid skirt and a girly t-shirt (unusual for me because I feel really insecure dressed like a girl, mild psychological reasons). Walking around with a friend, she goes off to get a picture of a really great Vincent cosplay and a Japanese man taps me on the shoulder and asks holds up his camera. A bit confused, I did a little pit of a pose and he took a picture. He smiled, said thank you and went on his way. He also too pics of me in costume the other two days I was there.

    2) Second day I wore a pink InuYasha cosplay (the dye didn't take like it should have). It was overall crappy, bad wig, pink, but I had bought his big sword as a gift for my bro so I felt a little better carrying that around. I sign up for the parade, 'cause who doesn't want to be in the parade, and a few other InuYasha cosplayers are really pumped that I showed up so their group looked better. Later a girl, maybe 11-12 years old dressed as Rin and freaks out in excitement to see me, we get pictures and see each other a few times. By the end of the night a man speaking broken English comes up to me and laughs saying he didn't believe a friend telling him about a Pink Inuyasha. He asked for a couple pictures, one being in character and another doing a cute pose pulling up my pant leg.

    3) My dad wore a lab coat and stethoscope one day of the con and had the Hooter's girls come out and get a picture with him, and had a guy stop and ask for a picture for the Hallway costume contest.

I was once at a shitty con here in the UK and upon leaving the main building the heavens opened and rain started pouring. I ran to my car and it wouldn't start, I get out my phone and start calling for local garages to get someone to come out and get it fixed. Out of nowhere a girl cosplaying winry came over and told me that she could take care of it and to open her up. Thinking it would take a lot longer to wait for a mechanic i let her have a go. After 5 minutes of tinkering she got it to work. I thanked her and offered her payment, which she refused. Cosplayed somewhat obscure anime (for Australia anyway), so we weren't expecting to be recognised much. Just did it for the love of the show, really.

Exchange student spots us, and absolutely fangirls our entire group (about 12 of us) and won't leave us alone, except in a really, really heart warming way. Said it was to become her greatest experience in Australia. Entire group wouldn't stop fucking daww'ing and god we were so happy.

Said exchange student is now a really good friend of ours.

    Feels good man.

At a tiny con in Arizona, not in costume. I'm wandering around with my friend, who knows nothing about video games. I spot a Spartan (from Halo). We ask for a picture and take one. Then he gestures over to me to stand next to him and hands me his blaster. My friend takes the picture and I spend the rest of the con in a happy bliss.

i don't know how to do the green text so here goes:

Went to this con this year and was talking to a girl about this cute plushie she had. Didn't know the girl, just met her and so my friends and I hung out with her. She asks me to watch her bags and then disappears after I agree. Ten minutes later she comes back and drops the same character plushie she has into my lap. I felt so warm and fuzzy on the inside. She disappeared again and we had to go so we made sure the friend she was with was with her bags. I felt bad for just leaving like that but we had to go eat. Thank you kind mysterious girl.

Aww..I love these theads. I have a couple of cute stories..
Dragoncon last year. I was dressed as Coraline complete with the creepy doll. Am approached by a few little kids who want a picture with me. Their Mom takes the picture and I bend down to chat with the kids a bit. The smallest girl gives me this really serious look and motions for me to come closer. I lean down and she whispers in my ear. "Did you know your doll is the Other Mothers SPY?!"
I gasp and go "Really? "Wow, thanks for telling me.."
She nods and is all "Be careful Coraline!"

    I d'awwed so hard.

So I'm cosplaying Nemu from Bleach and my bf is cosplaying Mayuri of course. The day consists of lots of pictures mostly of him "abusing" me in one way or another. We went our separate ways at some point in the day to go to separate panels. While I was in my panel waiting for it to start some girl walks up and asks for a hug. I'm a kind person and she didn't look creepy nor was she a hambeast so I nodded. We hugged and then she said to me as she walked away: "I don't who you are or who you're cosplaying. But I'm sorry that he's so mean to you.". She obliviously meant Mayuri and I don't why but it made me smile.

    Great cosplayer or greatest cosplayer?

LONDON: Actor Johnny Depp shocked a London school by answering a pupil's letter and visiting dressed as his character from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, teachers said on Friday.

Depp, 47, responded after nine-year-old Beatrice Delap sent a letter pleading for help in leading a mutiny against her teachers at Meridian Primary School in Greenwich, London.

Dressed as his character Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp performed pirate songs and dances for the pupils during the visit with four cast members.

The actor is filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at the nearby Old Royal Naval College.

In her letter to Depp, Beatrice wrote: ''We are a bunch of budding young pirates and we're having trouble mutinying against the teachers! We'd love it if you could come and help!'' Teachers said they encouraged pupils to write for a real audience in classes. ''This just goes to show it can reap great rewards,'' acting head teacher Jo Graham said.

''The children across the whole school greeted Captain Sparrow with great applause and sang him their own pirate song,'' the school said in a message on its website.

Got a few. Not as cute as the others.
ACen 06 I decide to cosplay for the first time as Merle from Escaflowne. I get to the con and start feeling like shit with all the great craftsmanship around. While standing in line for a panel this guy taps me on the shoulder and asks for a hug. I'm confused, but I give him one anyways. He tells me "He's always wanted to hug a Merle." Made my con.
ACen 10, I'm gophering with security and doing line control for the Saturday dance. People in the line having been giving me shit because they were stupid to read the rule book, my feet are killing me, and I have a killer headache. While making sure people don't cut the line, this chick motions for my attention and tells me "I look exhausted." I tell her I am and she pulls out a cookie and hands it to me hoping it would make feel better. It did.

After some discussion with tablemate and debate over whether this should go here or the Weeaboo thread, we decided here, as she was mainly benign, and just. Hilarious.

    >Said Tablemate had awesome print (pic related) that made most people stop and laugh.
    >Girl approaches wearing a Sonic hat and paws
    >Asks us if it's Simba

It is, so she launches into a 20-minute monologue about the Lion King, which includes, but is not limited to, these facts, spoken as gospel truth:
    >Kovu was trained to be a ruthless man but became a sexy man
    >The Lions are in Egypt
    >All of them are WERE-LIONS
    >Mufasa had a second wife, who was a spotted lion
    >They had three beautiful daughters
    >Male lions wouldn't abandon Male cubs, they're GENTLEMEN
    >Sarabi was the poorest lioness but Mufasa chose her anyway

All of this, she said as absolutely true, as fact. At first we tried to reason with her because we thought she was trolling. But when we realized she was actually all about it, we just grinned the whole time until she finally wandered away, mid-sentence. We spent the rest of the con quoting her. She was nice, but just rather crazy. And crazies are definitely one of the reasons I go back.

    This thread makes me very sad that my con year is essentially over ;_;

Here's a couple from past years.

PersaCon 2004, my very first convention. I was cosplaying as Summoner Yuna. It was SUCH a shitty costume, and I didn't have a wig, but I was having the time of my life wearing that thing. Stood in line to get my badge, admiring all the awesome costumes. The first thing I do when I get my badge is head to the dealer's room. Not five minutes into my first convention day, this really nice girl comes up and asks for my picture. I was SO happy and excited. After taking the picture, she puts all her stuff on the ground and does the Yevon bow. I nearly died. I was blushing so hard. Still remains one of the greatest con days I have ever had.

AWA 2009. I was cosplaying Cooro from +Anima. It was another shitty costume (after this one I realized I can't sew to save my life. lol), but this time I actually had a wig. I thought my head looked fine. I made the hat exactly like it was in the manga, and the wig I had was perfect for the character. Just, the rest of the costume sucked. lol Anyways, I was working at a booth in the dealer's room when these two girls came up and were nearly dying. They said they had never seen anyone cosplay from +Anime, and that Cooro was their favorite character. They asked for hugs (I obliged), got pictures and expressed sorry for not having any apples to give me. I was cheesing the rest of the day :D

    Another one from Connichi 2010

A Flandre cosplayer lost her hat on Saturday and somebody took it right after she lost it (literally, she turned around 15 seconds after losing it and it was gone) so a total of 10 people looked all over the con and bothered the lost&found people all days long.

On Sunday it was given to the lost&found and one of the people that looked for it actually drove to the home of the Flandre cosplayer to give her the hat back since she had already left.

Does reenactment count as cosplay? (if so, medieval event ≈ con)

    > I hear the Count's voice right behind me in the middle of the crowd
    > I turn to see him, staying in the plaza instead of going with the other actors, still in full armour
    > he's allowing a blind 20-so guy to know how medieval plate looks like by allowing him to touch, pat, manipulate, tug... every piece of his suit
    > he keeps at that for a good 15 minutes. In the 45 Celsius.
    > MFW I later learn he was NOT a paid actor but an amateur reenactor the actual actors had asked to play the evil Count because he had a full armour

If I was making this up, I'd add that I later brofisted him or something like that. But sadly, I couldn't even talk with him because he was behind a crowd of pic-demanding kiddies.

I went to my first con this year (AFO 2010) with a friend of mine. I mostly stayed around the dealers' room and met some pretty nice people. After a while, my friend wandered off to the game room, and I was too shy to join any of the groups, so I just kind of sat by the doors for a while and asked for the occasional picture. For an hour and a half.

During the last half hour or so, a L4D Hunter came up and asked if I wanted a hug. I'm a huge Left4Dead fan, so of course I said yes, and I got a hug from him.

Kind of silly, but it made my day.

Pic related, it's the Hunter hugging Gendo.

    A-Kon 21: Friday
I was wondering around the convention dressed as Sugar from a Little Snow Fairy Sugar playing random songs on my flute (Dango Daikazoku, Vocaloid songs, Sugar's Snow casting song, etc), when a Mother walks over to me smiling brightly. Apparently they were celebrating her daughters 6th birthday at the convention and she loved Sugar. The mom asked me to come over and play Happy Birthday for the little kid. I happily obliged and walked over and said Sugar's little introduction "Hi! I'm Sugar..blah blah blah" and played Happy Birthday. The little girl giggled the entire time and then had me help her blow the candles out on her cake. I got free cake and made a little girl's birthday. Feels good.

    A-Kon 21: Saturday
Woke up late. Missed photoshoot. Was late to photoshoot I was the host for. Overall bad day right? Grumpy, I trodged towards the dealers room to try and cheer myself by buying a plushie. I was in a sour mood but I didn't let it show. I walked passed someones booth and felt a tug on my skirt. (I was dressed as Cantarella!Miku Hatsune) I turn around and look down at this young girl dressed as Miku in her normal outfit. She looked up at me straight in the eyes and asked for a hug. I bawwed so hard and kneeled down to hug. As soon as I did, we were photobombed by everyone in the immediate area. That made my day man :'D

    Part 2 of 2

    Afest 2010: Saturday
Pretty good day so far. I'm dressed as Eager Love Revenge Love is War Miku Hatsune (that's a mouthful) and I'm getting a lot of pictures. I go into the dealers room and who do I see? The same little Miku from A-Kon. Her mother sees me and says something. The little girl looks up and runs over to me and says "Cantawaya" (I have GOT to figure out how old this girl is) and I smile brightly at the fact that they recognized me even in a different out. We take turns taking photos and I let her hold my megaphone. A few hours later, I run into another little girl cosplay Akita Neru and she asks for my picture. Just as her dad was about to take the picture, little Miku and her mom walk up and join in. I was so giggly after that.

My first con ever was back when I was 17, and at the time my social anxiety was pretty bad and I hated crowds. I took the risk of going to the con anyway because I really wanted to go and not let my disorder stop me from living my life. Well, I had a few small panic attacks here and there. (I thank god I'm not like this anymore.) By Sunday I was pretty worn out. It was mellow and there was not a lot to do, and overall I was bored and kinda bummed. While standing around talking with a friend, we suddenly heard this LOUD cackle and spun around to see a very, very in-character WaLuigi running comically in his oversized shoes from a Link cosplayer. I can't convey how funny it was just by describing it so you'll have to take my word. My friend and I almost pissed our pants laughing. It brightened my mood instantly and I left the con feeling great.

A few years later I was at a different con, and when I came back to my hotel room I found my brother had invited a bunch of friends to the room without asking...figures, being the social butterfly he is...but anyway, I got to talking with a few of these people and this one guy was pretty cool. We talked about what cons we frequent and what we cosplay, etc etc. and he mentions WaLuigi. Come to find out, yes, it was the very same guy. I jumped up ecstatically and gave him a huge hug and told him how much he'd made me laugh. Felt good man.

My story isn't that great, but it makes me smile.

Otakon 2010, hanging out in the fountain area, cospalying an NPC from FFX. Just hanging around, can't remember if I was with my group or not. A person comes up, asks for my picture, and before/while they're taking it they tell me that they're taking the pic for their friend who was too shy to come and ask me. I was astounded at this. I told them to tell their friend not to be afraid and that if they came and saw me they'd get a hug. They just kinda looked at me funny and left after the pic, but I really hope that pic turned out great for whoever that person's friend was, they really made me have a happy explosion inside for a bit.

    An Almost-Rage Story
So, I'm riding in an elevator full of sweaty hambeasts going to check out of my hotel. The elevator opens up.
There is a young woman standing there with a Staff Badge, an official-looking clipboard, a baby-stroller and a scowl.
"Look," she says. "This is the 4th time this elevator has come by full, and I need to get to the Convention Center NOW."
Now, I think to myself: Why'd she bring her baby?
But then I think: none of these douche-bags has luggage. And none of them have crutches...they can take the stairs for the next 2 flights to the lobby.
So, I get off of the elevator, and let her have my space, since both of my legs work fine, and I don't have a stroller.

Needless to say, I felt all warm and fuzzy inside for doing the right thing. Not to mention when I saw her later that day, he baby giggled at me. So that made it even better.

I've only been to one so far, and it was a huge deal to convince my mom to let me go with just my friend, since we were in sixth grade. Eventually, she decided that we could go if my brother did too. I was so sure he would ruin things somehow by following us around, or telling on us if we did anything 'bad', or whatever, but he was really great about everything. We basically never saw him the whole weekend. Because of how it went too, we can go back again, I'm sure, maybe even with just the two of us next time. Basically, everything was better than I expected.

I met my girlfriend that I'm now engaged to at a convention.

We met a sunday while I was sick in Near cosplay.
She was a Mello and cheered me up by stripping for me ((she had thick binding on so I didn't say anything))

But she made me smile and a few months later we hooked up.
