Tales of encounters with the general public while cosplaying or in lolita?
    >> E-Tan !T2yDkuD3Zg 09/08/10(Wed)14:36 No.3522034
Older ladies are always so nice about lolita. Most compliments I've received when wearing it in public are from older ladies. They are always telling me its so adorable and asking me where I got it, etc.

I went into a sub shop while in P3P cosplay, along with my fiance and the cashier thought it was pretty rad.
    Nothing spectacular, though. Sorry :C

We left SDCC to eat. When we walked out of the restaurant...zombies were EVERYWHERE. They'd intentionally scheduled zombie walk to coincide with the con. Some lady, pushing her way through 'em, stops in front of us (a Snow and the Totally Spies) and deadpans "Oh good, someone normal."

Went with a bunch of friends to the nearest mall to get food from a convention. Out of all of us I'm the one in stripper heels and a giant bow on the back of my dress. I got called everything from Sailor Moon to a superhero. Some chick ran up to me from her big group of guys and took a look at me, then turned back to her friends and yelled "It's a chick!"

I didn't take it personally, though. This town is so stuffed full of transvestites that you have to make sure when it comes to anyone in heels.

Needing a few con supplies, a friend and I stopped at a walmart decked out in lolita (I hate that place, but it was the nearest place that sold snacks and drinks). With it being Halloween, most people ignored us, but a bunch of little girls kept staring at us with big smiles. I heard a really little girl whisper to her sister "I bet they're going to a big kid's halloween party as a prince and princess!" (my friend was wearing kodona). It was really cute.

Any other Londoner here who never had strange encounters? Man, this is why I love London so much. I wear lolita occasionally and I've been in cosplay out & in public transport few times. Only comments I've had: While in lolita, "nice gown!" and while in cosplay "nice costume, is there a con today?".

On the other hand, I was just heading to work one day and I was wearing a NORMAL, non-loli, smart floral dress. This old bat stopped, looked at me and said that this is why this country is going to the dogs, because of people like me :/

    What a rude old lady!

Well, I've had experience in the underground wearing lolita and rocking horse shoes. A bloke on the train noticed them and asked if they were original Westwoods. I had to say no, but we had a really good conversation about fashion. He worked at a Armani boutique. Really cute. (probably gay, eh!) Wish I had got his mobile no.

so long story short, down the handrail, nearly lost it due to lack of depth perception, cop saw and chased me

At the Umineko midnight shoot a few older military guys from some party thing came over and asked what we were doing. They were drunk, but not obnoxiously. One of them wanted to take a picture with us, so we recruited him to act as Kinzo and the Beatrices and Battlers gathered around him. He was a pretty cool guy.

    Pic related.

Most of my cosplays have been as Snake (MGS3), not overly good, but certainly not bad.

I remember at Ikasucon 09, there was a gyros joint right next to the con. So I migrated down there with a few other hungry con goers for some lunch. For what it's worth, I was also lugging around Snake's box. As I sit down to eat, this little boy walks up to me and asks if I knew G.I. Joe. I told him that we played cards every weekend, and that he's really fun to be around. Kid beamed up, finished his meal with his folks, and waved at me when he left.

    I love those moments.

Otakon has the best responses, I think the people are just so used to it, they love us all.

A few years back, we're walking to the con and my friend's little brother is dressed as Sora from Kingdom Hearts. All of a sudden, big group of black guys shouting "SHEEET, IT'S THAT NIGGA FROM KINGDOM HEARTS." Our Sora just stops, tosses his keyblade over his shoulder, and poses. "Why yes, I am that nigga from Kingdom Hearts." Mind you, this kid is NEON WHITE. They stopped and talked for a while, the black guys were actually really cool!

This year, I'm Yoko and after getting asked to leave the mall for being "too naked", some lady stops me asking where I got my boots and wanting a picture of just them. I tried to explain that I made them, told her the source boot website, but she believed I just bought them with the flame and giant fake zipper.

Tinkerbell resulted in insane amounts of fun. Stopped constantly by "normal" families wanting pictures. On the way back to the hotel on Sunday I was trapped with my friends for the longest time and I felt soooo guilty for holding them up, so I tried to make it as quick as possible, but every kid that finished with me, three more would show up. I mean, I love kids, don't get me wrong, but I didn't have an hour to sit and entertain them all (though I sort off wish I did). After escaping the mob, we pass one of the street vendors selling bottled water and soda out of a cooler, he calls me over and tells me that "Tinkerbell needs to stay hydrated" and gives me a free drink.

We were walking across the town in which the con was held, with our flag right here (we were cosplaying as a Death Korps of Krieg -group. Got us into a couple of magazines as well!), when we suddenly heard a lot of honking. There was this middle-aged guy that was hanging out of his car window and furiously giving us thumbs up. We had received many positive remarks from the townsfolk, but this guy was fucking ecstasic. Warms yer heart. :)

Labor day my friends and I went to the mall, my one friend was in a more casual gothic lolita outfit, not full mind you, but casual. I was wearing a short skirt and black lace top, but this is a rural state where that's considered shameful and counterculture.

Anyways, we stopped at the bathroom to fix our makeup and such and it's a semi populated bathroom and our guy friends are waiting right outside the door.

Well, this little girl kept staring at us, but I brushed it off as a "they must worship Satan" stare.

But my boyfriend said that when she got out she yelled "Daddy, Daddy! There were two really pretty girls in there, they were so lacy and had pretty dresses!" where she was then promptly shushed by her mother and told "we don't talk about those people"

We all d'awwwed for a while after that.

PMX '08. There was some kinda stripper convention in the same hotel. When my friends and I were going up to the convention space in the elevator, two blonde ladies in really revealing latex dresses got in the elevator with us. They looked at our costumes and said, "Wow, we feel normal now!"

It also meant a bunch of pervy photographers who kept wanting pictures of the female cosplayers.

Oh god, this last Sakura Con. I was driving some friends down from Canada, so we had to go through the border in Team Fortress 2 costumes. The first question we got was "So... Why are you in uniform?" It all went downhill from there. We had to go inside and get questioned about where we were going, what we were doing, etc. They searched my car, too (luckily no one had gun props, since we'd all done other weapons). We ended up being so late that we missed the TF2 shoot, sad day.

The worst part? The exact same thing happened on the way back up. Only that time they actually separated us and questioned us individually. None of the border officers had heard of TF2, and they seemed to think we were making it up. It is pretty funny in retrospect, though.

Moral of the story: Bring the costume in a bag, change at the con, or just strip off the stuff that looks suspicious and keep that in the trunk. Border guards are always picky about things like that.

Sucks that you missed the shoot, but at least you got a story out of it, eh?

I was in the fabric store looking for some decent fabric to make a new skirt out of (had no luck with that) and some old lady asked me if I knew a girl in <insert nearby city here> who had white hair with black streaks and "wore dresses just like yours, and leathered-up boots and stuff" and she proceeded to call it "avatar fashion". I have NO idea what this was about. Maybe she'd misheard? Maybe the girl she knew was an Ita? Maybe the girl was just making her own fashion and calling it whatever and just happened to wear poofy skirts? No clue.

First time i ever cosplayed or went to a con was in 2002 for anime weekend atlanta. Well...after we parked the car, we all realized we had no money on us and needed to hit up the nearest atm. I didn't know there were atms in the con mind you, it was my first time.

I was dressed as tetsuo from Akira, big red cape, right arm covered in cables and silver paint, and with me were 2 fat girls dressed as characters from a Clamp series or something, i dunno. We went to the nearest bank that we could find on the way to the convention center.

Well it just so happens this bank was one of those older banks, not exactly built for convenience. The atm was in the middle of a huge lobby area. Which happened to be hosting some high society cocktail party.

Fuck it, we walked through the middle of that cocktail party to retrieve our funds. Got slackjawed stairs of disbelief from every direction.

    The reactions of little kids to my military-ish cosplays when i'm walking to and from the cons to the hotels is even funnier. my personal favorite;

"MOMMY, IS HE A BAD GUY!?"

I was in a purple ballgown, and a beehive-ish purple wig for the formal ball at Anime Boston 2 years ago, I stopped for a cigarette on the way to the dance. An older guy, maybe late 60s, walks around the corner, stops dead in his tracks, and says, 'i don't know why you're all dressed up, but you look gorgeous.' A few minutes later, some randome conkid ran past me, backed up and whispered, 'i love you.' In my ear, Than kept running. I fucking love that dress.

I got the best reactions from a few cons as Squall Leonhart in '09. I met a friend for dinner late Sunday after Katsucon that year had ended, and we went out to a pub in Crystal City. There was one guy sitting at the bar who saw my face--mainly the gnarly scar--and just stared in shock. While my friend and I sat, he kept turning his head time and time again and staring at the scar with his mouth gaping open. He'd only turn back when I'd occasionally glare at him for gawking like he'd never seen a guy with an injury before.

Otakon '09 got some good reactions too. I was going back to the Hyatt to get my luggage after the con, and got a "Hey, Sexy! <3" from two black women on the patio of the steakhouse next to the hotel. I guess they liked the leather pants. When I went up to Baltimore Penn Station to catch a train home, someone randomly snapped a picture while I was resting in the waiting room with my suitcase. After I went down to the platform, someone else who was getting off the train in Baltimore looked over and did a double-take that to see Squall Leonhart waiting for a train. Then, someone in Metro Center remarked behind my back, "Day-um, now that's a real goth!"

    "...Whatever."

A couple years ago, there was actually a wedding held at the hotel we were staying at (right next to the con hotel). I was in full-blown geisha attire. I got in to the elevator with several cosplayers, and who should step on? The bride and groom! They asked if they could get their pictures taken with all of us. I hate people pulling on my tail [if i have one for the cosplay] because it tends to get pulled off. But that sounds pretty cute.
Not really the general public, but...
I once cosplayed Kurumi [from bible black] for a cosplay meet up in the movies. The first person I saw was my english teacher.
And he knew who I was. And the character I was cosplaying.
    Awkward.

I'm a britfag and I go to U.S. cons (you guys have more fun - sorry fellow brits.)

Usually someone comes to say hello to me and suddenly, my accent pours out of their favourite character. The faces are priceless, but I did have one cow who pretty much insisted I couldn't dress as the character I was cosplaying as because....

"HE'S AMERICAN YOU CAN'T DO THAT."

And yes, I was cosplaying an anime character.

At Otakon this past year during the fire drill I was walking back to my hotel room in my Joker getup but with my two coats slung over my arm and sleeves rolled up due to heat. Anyway I'm walking past what I think was a bank and this security guard looking guy comes out and asks if I can take a picture with his kids, a boy and a girl who looked to be around 10 years or less. This guy seemed positively ecstatic to see me and the kids had these big ol' smiles on their faces.

    People love a villain.

I'll add my own story to the bunch. Mind you, it's not cosplay, but it does involve a costume.

Back in the summer of 07' I worked as a host in a retirement home for the elderly. At a certain point the women in charge of entertainment were organizing a "magic night". They had a real magician and everything.

Anyhow, they knew I larp'd, so they asked me to show up in costume. Ended up in a long suede coat, suede tophat, some black-ish underclothes. A lot of bottles hanging everywhere and a huge (2.2 meter) golden staff. They painted my face in odd colors: Basecoat of gold with streeks of blue, silver and purple.

Anyhow, I ended up being the silent presence. first standing at the door and having people wonder whether or not i was a statue, and later following our "gypsy fortune teller" around in a guard-ish manner. The elderly were really positive about it and stuff.

Anyhow, when it ended I had to leave in a hurry and as such didn't have time to get changed/remove the paint. Caught a train and got some odd stares/remarks. Ended up sitting down somewhere, and everyone moved to the other side of the cabin.

Anyhow, got out of the station, mother was there to give me a ride home. Got in her car. we were driving on the highway when an SUV filled with Polish guest workers over-took us. I look at them and they at me. The look lasted for about a second, before their faces went total "WTF?!"

This year at fanime, I finished up with the swap meet on Friday with a fairly hefty amount of money. I was in my BB Hood costume. I decided despite being late(around 2am), I needed to deposit the money into the bank. As I'm waiting to cross the street, two guys stop at the light and roll down their window and start yelling "HEY LIL' RED SWEET THANG, WHERE YOU GOIN' TONIGHT?" to which I proceeded to point to the ATM and tell them "to the bank". They slowly drove away laughing and pointing as if they've never seen someone in a costume go to the ATM

My friend and I were walking in to SDCC this year wearing our Ironette outfits when we passed this bag-lady looking type who was holding up photos of ships and yelling at people (I think she was trying to sell them?), and when we passed her she yelled "Disgusting ladies! Disgusting!"
We just haters-gonna-hate strolled right past her and then burst out laughing.

And speaking of d'awww kid stories, I was at Wondercon this year in my Spider-Girl outfit and a little boy wearing a Superman shirt and his older brother came up to me and his dad asked if they could have a picture. The older one was really gregarious, but the little one was so shy that he wouldn't say a word to me, he would only nod, shake his head, or shrug. So I got down on my knees and started talking with them, saying that Spider-Man was my dad and that he was my favorite superhero. I asked the little one if Superman was his favorite superhero and he shook his head no. Then I asked who his favorite superhero was and he held up his Batman action figure. We had a whole conversation and he never said a word to me. It really made me d'aww because I was super shy as a kid too.

Just do your best to relax and make small conversation where you can. If the conversation dies, shrug it off and remember that it's not a big deal. Be polite and smile. Try not to be too nice to the clingy weeaboos though. They're scary as fuck and can ruin your whole con experience. If anyone is causing you an unreasonable amount of discomfort, contact con staff to see if they can throw them out. Be nice, but don't be a fucking doormat.

Katsucon '10, best con ever. Trying to explain "anime" to a bunch of old people's always a blast.
At one point, I blurted out "I'm so sorry for us nerds ruining your time" to this one couple taking my picture. They just laughed and said that we were the best part of their stay there.
Another time, as DWC miku (who's half horse, for those unfamiliar), I came across this little girl who had just been acting up to her parents. She was staring at my horse legs, so I just kneel down as far as I can and said "I used to talk to my parents like that, and this is what happened" and walked away. Didn't expect the thread to still be up, so, more stories.

So, I was at Acen 2010, same snake costume. I was the "Snake in a box", the one with "not snake" on it, anywho.

So, me and the other metal gear guys have our own photoshoot for Saturday, and afterwards I decided to go get something to eat outside the con, since the cafe there is freakin' expensive.

I forgot where I headed too, but I had plenty of the usual looks, tons of people recognizing who I was going as, and I think two little kids going 'Look, mommy! It's an army man in a box!"

It's always nice when people approach you kindly about what the get up is for, who you're going as, and it's the best when they want some pics.

Cosplaying as Utena from the movie, my friend was Anthy. Walking down the street toward the convention, there was actually quite a few people who weren't dressed up. These three guys were walking next to us and kept looking over. One guy in particular looked really amused by our costumes.

Finally he said something, complimenting me on my sword and asked if it was real. I smiled and told him no. He then asked who we were supposed to be and what I use the sword for.

Not exactly an easy question to try and explain to people, let alone explain in a few short sentences.

"She's my rose bride and I am her prince. I have to fight to protect her."
    "You're her prince?"
    "Yes."
"You should be a boy, then!"
    "No~"
    "Yes, if you're her prince."
(Anthy) "She's perfect the way she is!"

At that point they had to go a different way, we went into the convention, and began laughing.

Hotel I was staying at one year was having a business convention/meeting of sorts the same weekend, so my friends and I kept running into these older men in full suit and tie.

My friend and I were in an elevator with one of them and I think I was the only person cosplaying at the time out of my group. I was Tieria from Gundam 00, pink cardigan outfit...this is how our conversation went down:

    BizGuy: Nice hair.
    Me: Thank you!
    BizGuy: I wasn't being serious.
    Me: . . .
BizGuy: Aren't you worried about offending people with purple hair?

I was at an outdoor meetup in a park and this older guy with an SLR comes up and is like "Hey what's the deal here? Anime? Oh that's interesting, it's just great to see people out here using the park..."

Then he took my photo and a couple others and bam we're on the neighborhood blog. Commentary was minor and largely positive. "Yep, just another day in [neighborhood]."

    Feels good, man.

I was going to Anime Next when it was still in the Meadowlands. I was taking the subway to the Port Authority to catch the bus over, dressed as Haruhi Suzumiya. This woman on the train, breastfeeding with her tits fully hanging out asks "WHOA Are you going to a clown convention? That's so neat?"

Mine kind of represents the worst reaction the public can have to cosplayers. I wasn't in costume, I was just hanging out, it was Sunday at Onicon in Houston. Anyway, this Asian guy (not sure which Asian) dressed normally without a con badge is just walking from girl to girl taking pictures up their skirts. He was real smooth about it too, like he did it all the time. He disappeared before we could get anyone after him.

During Otakon this year, a bunch of non-con goers took pictures with me in my Joker cosplay. I had a mom who had her two children want to take photos with me. Then a bunch of pre-teen girls asked right after. They had no visible con badges on them what so ever.

It was kind of cool that the general public was so into it.

These little girls who were guests at the hotel, but not the con asked me if I was Lady Gaga when I was cosplaying Power Girl. The only thing that frightened me was they were no more than 10, and the youngest one looked about 4 and she was the one who asked me. I didn't know kids knew about Gaga that young.
They were really sweet kids though, I talked with them about Pokemon for a bit and they played with my BJD I had with me.

I was coming back from a con once, dressed as the Joker, but I hadn't had the chance to wash off my makeup before we left so I stopped off in a Borders and went into the bathrooms to wash my face. As I was getting it off, a guy walks in, sees me doing something with makeup and long green hair and mumbles an apology before making a hasty exit. About five seconds later he came back in, obviously after having checked that it was indeed the men's.

We laughed about it. Good times.

One con I went to I was dressed as Kuro Neko from Trigun, mascot. This little girl came up to me in the dealer hall and asked me if I was dressed at Jiji. Took me awhile to remember who Jiji was, but as I was about to correct her she held up a Jiji plush over her face to show me. So I went along with it, she got a hug, and picture, her mom was all giddy about the outfit as well. And randomly throughout the day she'd find me and play with my tail / hug my leg then run off again. :3

I was in the food court during a convention. I wasn't really cosplaying that day, but I was wearing a lolita style french maid outfit. As I was standing in line for my pizza, some guy came up to me and said, "I am buying you pizza." I wasn't expecting that, and it seemed like he came out of nowhere, so I was startled and just said, "Huh? Oh, no thank you, I can get it myself." He then he got really serious and his expression was somewhat 'do what I say and you won't get hurt' and he said, "NO. I am buying you your pizza." At that point I shut up and let him buy me my pizza, after which he said, "There you go, now you have some free pizza from stranger." and walked off. After I was done eating at a table with my friends, he and a group of other guys walked buy and he called, "How was the pizza?" and I yelled back thanking him.

I have no idea if he attended the convention or was just some random guy who liked my outfit. In any case, he was pretty cool, even if he did scare me at first.

I don't think I have any outrageous stories, but I've had a few awkward/fun encounters.

This past Otakon I cosplayed Raven from Teen Titans. I was waiting to cross the street with the rest of my fellow Titan cosplayers when this group of like four black guys comes up shouting, "Ohhh. It's that sexy goth girl". After shouting that many times they remembered that I was Raven, asked for a picture, and went on their merry way. Was pretty awkward I must say.

Same day and same cosplay my friends and I had a lot of requests from little kids, parents, and foreign soccer players for pictures. Made me happy that Teen Titans is still popular among the little children. : )

at FanExpo this year, my friends and I are in the middle of a Code Geass photoshoot. We were outside of the convention center - about a block away near the stairway for the CN tower - so while it was pretty empty, people would occasionally pass. All of the sudden, about seven black guys start coming up the stairs and one was like "SHIT MAN you guys look tight!" and another looked at our Zero and asked "dude aren't you like, hot in that or whatever?" They asked us for a picture with them and our photographer ended up taking a bunch using each of their phones/cameras. As they were leaving they were like "I'M PUTTIN THIS ON FACEBOOK!" Unfortunately I have yet to find the pictures...

One year at AWA, we were sharing the Galleria with a Parenting conference/seminar (we kept calling it baby con). I was dressed as Chun-li and I was walking past the baby con booths to get to the dealers room when out of nowhere this guy jumps out in front of me and shouts "Ho shit it's Chun-li", he then proceeded to snap pictures of me with his phone, while his pregnant wife tried to drag him away. It was pretty funny
