ITT: Post times when you felt like an old fag at an anime convention. Greentext is optional.> Go to the Adult swim revolution panel at animenext 2010. The panelist father times it by saying he has been going to this con and hosting the panel since 2006. My ass felt old when I remember I've been going to anime next since 2004.(current age 19 and a half). > Remembering that the anime next 2004 dealers room is so similar to the '10 artist alley. Dealers room is so huge nao in comparison. >That as a young kid in 2004(13). I could actually hold a conversation on anime with people twice my age and went ALONE. My parents dropped me off with a cellphone(felt lucky to get to use it for once) 45 minutes away. Felt great to buy stuff from the dealers room without being seen as a little shit compared to todays generation.
I noticed that unless you have put in a lot of work to the con or to fandom over the years, you're not allowed to go to cons anymore once you get old. Otherwise, you're that "creepy old guy".
The fact that I can remember a time where digital fansubs did not air at any anime convention.
I can't read the guy's sign in OPs pic. What does it say??
>Remembers Fanime at foothill college. man oh man, dem steps.
>>3291807It says " Anime dad, need money for anime." The rest is too pixelated for me to see.
After having not heard it for a few years, I recently listened to that 'Butterfly' song from DDR. (Ai ai ai I'm your little butterfly~)Then I remembered how that song used to be a few years ago what 'Caramelldansan' is today--the overused song you heard everywhere and everybody started getting really sick of. Also reminds me of how Inuyasha and Chobits used to be the big 'over-cosplayed' series people whined about.
>>3291816Oh man.... that.... that WAS a long time ago.The memories, like so many pieces of yarn weaving themselves into a sweater we call, Nostalgia.
>>3291816I remember that song playing like crazy at anime cons from like 2003-2006.
>When their was no hot chicks at anime conventions. Seriously the women have upgraded a whole lot since 2000's.
at otakon 09 i think it was, i felt both kinda old and really pissed at the "cosplay for 21+ adults" or something like that. every single panelist was a retarded assholeI felt old because i remembered days of conventions with at least semi intelligent people.
>>3291767...19 is old? You can't even drink yet! Step up to the table when you remember buying VHS tapes of Lodoss War (because there WAS no such thing as file sharing!) at a dealer's room for $35 a piece. They had TWO episodes on them.
>>3291928And when you had to choose "sub OR dub" for a VHS release.Kids today, still don't know how good they have it.
I remember when this whole concept of 'short wig + clip-on tails = pigtail wig!' didn't exist.BACK IN MAAAAH DAY, YOU WENT THROUGH THE TEDIOUS PROCESS OF PULLING YOUR WIG UP AND STUBBING IT, AND YOU DAMN WELL LIKED IT.
Remember when you had to pause your VHS player and take a picture with your cheapo camera? Lol Then the awkward visit to a drugstore to get the pictures developed?
>>3291946Unless it was prior Katie Bair's tutorials or you were just unaware of them.In which case, you just tried to pull a wig up and had no clue why the fuck it looked terrible and why it no longer fit your head.
>>3291940I remember when there was no such thing as getting your anime subed. You either got Robotech or raw anime on vhs at the local Japanese market. the "local" Japanese market for me still is two states away...>>3291946BACK IN MAH DAY YOU SPRAYED YOUR HAIR THE COLOR OF YOUR WIG SO'S WHEN YOU PUT IT IN PIG TAILS THE WEFT'S DIDN'T SHOW AS BAD. AND WE WON BEST IN SHOW FOR THAT KIND OF THING!kids these day's, with their fancy wefting and clip on pigtails.
>>3291956Your VHS paused? And stayed still? Dude.

>got an e-mail from someone who saw my Vincent Valentine costume on Cosplay Lab >"Did you buy your costume on eBay? What store is it from?">costume is from 2001. Back then Alisa-chan was really the only person who sold costumes on eBay. If you searched "cosplay" you'd get about two pages of some shitty wigs.>FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Damn kids.
>>3291968lol dude it was the art of getting it before the picture goes wild

I enjoy this thread. This isn't -THAT- long ago, but Otakon...2006 I believe, there was a strange lack of cosplayers. My friend and I really thought that cosplay was dying down because of that con. I look at the cosplay scene now and laugh at myself for thinking that.
>remember watching subbed anime on VHS>went to first convention in 2002>cosplaying since 1997...and I'm only 19... hurrrr

My first anime convention was 2003 and I was 16.Now I am 23... damn!
>>3292006yeah, my mom made me some pretty bitching costumes too back when I was 6 years old.
>>3292085Don't feel bad. I'm going to my first convention at the age of 24. ;_; Shit sucks man.
This thread... so fun.Certified old fag here. I remember when the only drama was between Sailor Jamboree and Jasper Cosplay Closet. Also the only way cosplayers really talked was through the COSP mailing list.
This! There are so many 16 year olds with their parents now, I went to my first con at 13 aqnd didn'teven have a cellphone back then. I had quarters for a payphone because my mom didn't trust a kid with a cellphone
Is 23 old? Or have /cgl/ older people/cosplayers?
>Going to Flushing Busy Bee mall and going to the basement to rent animu VHS tapes cause anime was too expensive and never shown on TV unless it was Sailor Moon or DBZ, but through the power of VHS, got to watch Stars.>Going to cons and being excited to see everyone's hand made costumes because eBay costumes didn't exist.Been going to cons since 01', been into anime for who knows how much longer.

I remember going to my first anime convention: AWA 3. I remember going AFO 1, I remember going to Katsucon 4. I also remember going to the first nan desu kan.Old as FUCK, 31 here.
Younfags. I started cons in 2000, and I'm 26 now. My first con was A-kon... let me describe it. I was 16 at the time and one of the youngest people there. Congoers didn't worship the dub voice actors there. Almost everyone there probably had vhs fansubs at home. People had intelligent conversations about the anime they watched without the MOE shit or lolitas. There wasn't even that much in the way of visual kei cosplay yet. Marmalade Boy and Utena cosplayers had a fun argument over who had the better shoujo series. The dealer's room only had Mixx manga in English, the rest was dealer's tables of manga in Japanese. There was no drama at all at the masquerade between cosplayers. Staffers were all 18+. People on the younger side were way more mature than they are now. NO RAVE. God I hate the majority of cons now.
I remember when my back hadn't encountered a 300 lb hambeast.Goddammit I was a happier dude back then.
>>3292219dude i hate to break it to you but anime fans were still awful ten years ago: they're just much younger now
>>3292219Remember SMILE magazine? Oh, how I loved it so.
>>3292248No they weren't. Today's youngsters are a certain caliber of fail. We were shitty back then. Yes. But fucking: yaoi paddles? yaoi/yuri shout matches? Signs. SIGNS EVERYWHERE. Shouting 4chan memes. Vuvuzelas? "ZOMG LOST THE GAME XD".Come one, 2000 and earlier cons were not as fucking bad as they are one. Period.
>>3292251I agree, I never would act like that in public, even as a kid. My mom taught me better than that and I always feel shame for the kids who act like that now since they clearly don't
Wow, OP, you sound like me.Anyway, I pretty much always feel like an old fag at anime conventions.Notable experience: I'm a Hetalia cosplayer. When I first met the local Hetalia group, finding that generally peoples' first anime amongst them was something like Naruto or Bleach, and that they'd only been into anime since about the time those came out.Realization that most of them were born when I was 4 or 5.That and I've noticed that fewer of the people I actually talked to at anime conventions are still going because now they're old (over 30, probably).

>>3292251BLOW THE VUVUZELA!
Oh yeah, I also remember when it wasn't so easy to get anime/manga/anime CDs, and when you had to get subbed or dubbed VHS... and then when anime DVDs were hella expensive. (I'm only 19 so I didn't have to buy VHS fansubs or raws to watch my anime, but I've been into anime since I can remember, so.)
I remember having to drive 2 hour to get non-hentai anime (Seriously, all I could ever find in any sort of video store was hentai.)I forgot who the subber was but having to wait WEEKS for a download to finish off of IRC (Fucking dial up)I never got into VHS. They were too bulky and I did not have enough space.Discovering http://animecornerstore.com/HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS that was what jumped started my anime hobby really. Buying a shit ton of doujinshi one time. Then finding out it was ALL PORN.My parents weren't exactly thrilled. Now couple with the fact that there was a bunch of futa in there...well I had to go out and get laid then bring the girl home to convince them that I wasn't gay nor into little boys.Fuck. That was a trip down memory lane. Too bad I'm more of a gamer though.
Man, I went to a convention in Pitts this year, and was in the karaoke room. Some of the young kids (7 - 12) and even a few narutards didn't know the lyrics to Pokemon theme. POKEMON!
