    Okay guys.
    MaidCafes...

What do you think of them?
    Any good stories?
What do you think could make them better?
What makes a maid girl likeable and what makes them really annoying?

    Any Maid ANYTHING!

    Okay and GO!

Maid Cafes in the west are kind of pointless because people don't typically have maid or waitress fetishes. We want sexy waitresses with big boobies waiting on us. Not cosplayers.

And since these "maid cafes" are usually only associated with cons, the person who is serving you is probably of questionable looks or charisma, let alone someone youd get aroused by.

I guess all I have to say is ladies...
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT put on a fake voice, DO NOT do "cute" little poses/ movements (Nyan hands, nekomouth, bonk-self-on-head, ect.), DO NOT punch or hit your costumers (Not fucking cute), DO NOT pretend to like a show or game you know nothing about and PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT DO ANYTHING STEPHANIE YANEZ DOES... EVER.

    Please just be yourselfs.
Be polite, Have manners and treat people how you would like to be treated.

I disagree. If they aren't acting cute or being funny, wtf is the point? Just stand there and be a typical waitress? No one is going to these convention maid cafes for serious dining. It's all a novelty.

I think that's kind of the point. A lot of otaku nerds think that some of the anime tripe is 'cute'. Like >>3283890 said, it's novelty. If you want go and want a girl to act like a human though, I'm sure you can tell her to knock it off.

I always kinda wanted to be a maid in a cafe though. I really just enjoy serving people, and I like acting a part (hurrdurr cosplay) but there's rarely an opportunity to do such a thing.

Based on my experience with US convention maid cafe, they don't do the cutesy stuff right. Its just embarrassing to watch them do it when its not their natural thing to do. Its like a short person acting like he's labron on the baskerball court. Sure some can do it, but most of the time, it doesn't work out. Example, the blonde in the picture. I absolutely hate her 'kawaii desu Japanese voice' - its annoying as hell - but her British voice is awesome.
What makes them better? Beer and alcohol.

That's the problem with these maid cafes. The whole idea is to appear submissive and willing to please for a pleasant fantasy-like experience, yet they act like they're the star of the show and you have to show them respect at all times. They act like this is cosplay and that they have a right to not do shit for you if they don't want to, etc. It's supposed to be all about pleasing and serving the CUSTOMER. Not attention whoring.

I think that it doesn't translate as well in American culture. Like, we just aren't as big on the "moe" factor here so it doesn't really work...I dunno, most maid cafes at cons that I've been too were pretty boring, expensive and the maids are not really rehearsed to do anything. (they kinda wander to your table, try to be cute and most of the time arent)If you try to change the image of what you see in Japan, then you are just gonna get a mess because they can't decide on which route to go. :/ We can't imitate the maid cafe that Japan has.

Oh man, I've never been to a maid cafe before but they should work it like a host club. Whenever you first enter, there should be a Maid Menu, have a list of maids with their pictures and tidbits of there personality inside. Maid Cafe reviews in Japan. It gives some good info.

I don't like when people try to combine men into maid cafes, since you know...the whole point of maid cafe is for a maid to serve you like a master coming back home. So the crossdressing boymaids, butlers, and hosts stay in Yaoi Con kthnx.

I don't like when maids act "fake" and over exaggerate. Honestly if a maid has to do that, it means she's truly not...moe~. And when using Japanese, get the accents and speech right! I find it rude when the maids do not use formal Japanese speech, so I would usually hope there is someone that knows Japanese (and preferably someone who is a native/fluent in Japanese).

Yeah, but the only problem with this would be if the maids can act moe and not annoying or insane. I'd hate to order a high pitch squeely kind of girl on accident. There should be like auditions before anyone gets hired. ...it sounds complicated, but if the maids are really good at what they do, they should be able to make more money.

The way it was run was just god-awful. There was this terrible sense of disorganization the whole time because it was being managed by an (albeit sweet) weeaboo who had little to no organizational skills and an even lesser understanding of what is cute and what is fucking obnoxious. All of our bodyline outfits were ordered as XXL for some reason under the pretense that they would be taken in to our measurements; however, despite my constant checking in, by the time my first day rolled around my outfit had still been completely untouched. Needless to say, I drowned in it. They decided to do all of the sewing work on Thursday night and all of the time was taken up making the dresses fit the few ogres and MEN we had. Speaking of which, there was absolutely no screening process to get into this thing...endless nights of girls shouting in spattering of bad Japanese at each other and a tranny talking about his furry lifestyle.

Too top it all off, the hours were screwy as fuck. We worked all day every day with little to no breaks for some of us (while some got whole days off??), couldn't order any of the restaurant foods, and couldn't even ask to escape to the bathroom between customers. We had three girls or more get sick from over work and if memory serves one even passed out. It was a nightmare.

I did it as a free ride to the con :/ but guess what, I didn't SEE any of the con. There was literally no off time. I could go on but my grudge is showing :T

Then go to a fucking butler cafe then.

The whole atmosphere of a maid cafe is faaaaar different than one of a butler cafe.

    Quick comparison:
A maid cafe is supposed to be very...innocent and the maid roleplays as your own personal moe maid. It's very child-friendly, too.

Butler cafes...are not. It's meant to appeal to fujyoshi (and let's note most butler cafes are women anyway), and the butler must role-play a quiet, stern role that must follow the command of the customer.

    Butlers =/= Maids.

Really? Wasn't this the second year they ran this? You'd think they would have made some improvements. I thought the maid cafe closed at like 5? I always figured once it closed that's when you guys had your "con time."

That sucks, man. I'm sorry it was so crappy. I'm glad I decided not to sign up.

And were they really breathing down your back that bad about stupid stuff like bathroom breaks? Oi. I get that kinda crap at work here at home, I'll be damned if I'd put up with what is my vacation time.

    Thanks for the info. Seriously.

Maybe I'll go next year just to cheer the maids up. I didn't get in without a reservation but this past year I was wearing my Sailor Mercury for like an hour and one of the girls came up to me at the glass window, with a big grin and motioned for a picture. Then a bunch of her other maid friends all came over and waved. It was very cute and nice. I'm not happy to find out they were all being treated like poop. They seemed chipper enough but that was also on Friday...so I guess by Saturday they were probably all dying.

    I COMPLETELY AGREE.

It would make the industry that much more competitive. Suddenly, the maids are making the extra effort to beautify themselves so they're chosen more often. This results in a cafe with lots of cute maids, which results in a lot of business, which results in more businesses of the same nature...

What I'm saying is that, if it were that much more competitive, then we might actually have maid cafes and host clubs and all that shit in America one day. Which would be totally awesome.

Post on Anime Konji's forum about your experience.
Outside of convention, like in Los Angeles, Ca, there are a couple of maid cafes. The one I've been to, Royal/T, is just "Starbucks w/ food and maids" but its probably the best representation of an American Maid Cafe. They've hosted a dozen of good premiere events, like the Final Fantasy's Distant Worlds II record premier

I work in a maid cafe and my outfit had cats ears on it. I tooked them off. I'm also very small so i have to machine washed my outfit and dry it before it finally fit! I wanted a normal one but oh well what can you do. Plus I do understand there is an undertone to the "maid cafe" that is a bit sexual but it is cute and all that but please, please DONT touch us. Private space people! Other than that it's fine, it's also fun to talk in japanese to japanese people in formal. One time this 40 year old white man came up and spoke to me in slang and i'm like what are you doing, i had spoken in formal and he kept saying oh you should use slang! For your infomation, no 40 year old person would actually use slang at that age. Unless you wanna be considered weird. Plus i naturally have a high voice (that i'm training to be lower) and people are like aww so cute or ehh why are you doing that. If I could I would stop but my manager said it is suppose to be cute. The only annoying fact is that weeaboos always come in and except you to do a little extra service for them. I like normal people who wants to experiance a little pop culture in our cafe. But guess what, nope! I find it funny though because our cafe actually serves food, we dont entain except for greeting and palying games with our customers. We have real food! It's fun but it has it's drawbacks.

I'd go to the maid cafe at our local con if they were a little more proper. They've got cheap handmade maid costumes and butlers in a goodwill vest and baggy dress pant. Most of them have okay personalities, but they end everything with "arigatou gozaimasu, xie xie" whats with the random Chinese?
anyway, something like the first cafe here
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrHfSHuIz5Q

and I've been to the yaoi con cafe, they're not immune to ugly volunteers in skirts either. But then they don't try so hard to be moe.

Oh I remember when I went to one. Thank GOD we're allowed to pick the maids, I chose the cutest one with the shortest skirt (but she was wearing something frilly underneath so you can't really see her panties) with catears. It was awesome, she gave me a back massage, danced for me and then sung for me. I gave her a tip that costs as much as the food ( which she decorated just for me). <3
I wish I can say the same for the rest, they look like they bribed the manager to get to be a cafe maid (they look like men).

I always wanted to attend a con with an awesome guy as his personal maid. Not the cutesy type either, the quiet, elegant, "yes, master" type. Just for a day or so, while he goes around con. Run errands for him, carry his stuff, serve him his food. It'd be fun to play along with that.
    >> Anonymous 07/17/10(Sat)09:35 No.3286642
what introduced animaid cafe into my life was this at the pmx dance:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqjjflf7y6k

sadly, my first impression on them was "these ppl are annoying." the dance at pmx was some awesome stuff, and then they requested the dance floor be cleared just so we had to watch their stupid little happyhappymoehappymoe dance routine.

i wanted to get to know animaid better before passing judgement over somethin so little, so i talked to most of them. there is only 1 person in animaid who is really nice imo. the rest of them are either full of themselves or just annoying in general. even worse is there fanbase. they just scream hey look at meh store bought maid costume and cosplay wig, i are kawaii? not sure if it's supposed to be cute or what but i think it's one of the sadder forms of attn grabbing.

yeah i kno, haters gonna hate. this is 4chan tho and thats what i do.

Pretty full of themselves when they can't even coordinate themselves to a idol song. This has always been my beef with them: they seem so happy to be in a maid cafe, like they're the only successful one around, yet their dances always have 5 people out of 10 doing the moves wrong like they never practiced. At all. Seriously, if you have pride in your "work", put some extra offtime into your planned dances.

So? Who cares? Why does it even matter? The whole idea of maid cafe in the US is silly as it is. Why does it matter if they know the dance perfectly or not? If they were in Japan and had a lot of competition it would make sense. Your post is just stupid and taking the whole thing way too seriously. The whole point of a maid isn't for them to dance anyways.

Because you're putting on a performance. Because you're selling yourself to the crowd. If you're not making the effort to learn the dance, to learn habits of a maid, to practice good behavior and your "lines", then why are you there? To be proud of something is to put more effort upon another to make it "perfect". You're selling yourself, other girls are selling themselves, for a business. If you can't serve well, can't dance well, then it looks sloppy thus that business looks sloppy. It is temporary but give it your all while you're there. It's okay to have fun but business is still a business.

since we're specifically talking about Animaid, they're the only 'organizational' maid cafe that operates inside and outside of anime conventions. They travel around doing dances at events, festivals, and public ventures as well as private ones. If you're a tackle football player, but playing in France where its not popular, does that mean you should play subpar football? No, you play the best damn game you can so that you can try to inspire others to appreciate the game. Same would be applied here.

this. also, if you want to be at a con, you need to consider a lot more things. for example, you probably can't run an event like that out of your hotel room, so you'll need permission from the con to serve food and probably to make it a mostly child friendly event unless the con is all right with having it be 18+, which i know a lot of cons in my area are whiny about.

that would actually be kind of cool in my opinion. doing it as a con event and making it semi-family appropriate would mean more work on the part of the maids to be actually cute instead of gross fake cute while showing lots of t&a to compensate. and honestly, from what i've read about maid cafes in japan... well, any kid old enough to be at a con i'd probably take there. they'd probably enjoy the personalized service and the dancing and stuff. short skirts are kind of over a kid's head unless panties actually are showing.

no... my local cons just have had serious bugs up their asses about certain events, including room party events in recent years. like people shutting down hentai room parties that were carding everyone or trying to get rid of a traditional room that shows incredibly violent or disturbing material and you have to be 18 to enter (or water it down til it's just people cussing occasionally.) the reason they do this appears to be the four people who bring their children to these cons and can't keep an eye on them.

They have a food grade of A last time i checked, I dislike their uniform, but I understand the theme they're trying to put. The only maid I like is Kat. She actually makes it feel like the place is a maid cafe of sorts (my needs and interest are being attended to) while the rest are acting like the place is like starbucks. Royol/T is more of an art exhibit and 'omg look they have maids serving food and drinks' than a maid cafe, but they have held some good events over the last year or so. Parking SUCKS and its literally in the middle of no where. They food menu is always changing and they started serving alcohol some time ago, but as you would expect the price is higher than normal. The place is own by Europeans; they aren't your weaboo and are there to make a profit. And that dog in >>3287573 pic always freaks me out for some reason...

from what I can tell, how Royal/T is still around since 2008 is that they mix the theme of maid cafe with something else. R/T is an art exhibition so they have events and stuff like that every so often (I believe they even had a birthday thing for Hello Kitty one time). Solely doing a maid cafe theme won't work outside of Japan, but dressing up cute at a bakery seems okay... though its not to a level of 'maid cafe'

I hate to sound racist, but skinny Japanese girls acting moe is very different than greasy American girls acting 'moe'... I think if these cafes had stricter guidelines for looks and taught them how to do their hair/makeup/clothes, it might be nicer. However, the one cafe I went to, the girls were all very nice--not a weeaboo in the bunch, meaning no squealy-desu-moe... but, the lack of any food and the expensive price killed what could have been an okay thing.

Oh god, not this shit again.

This is why most maid cafes fail, ESPECIALLY with hosts/butlers incorporated with it.They don't do their goddamn BASIC research whatsoever.

As said before, the environment for maid and butlers are different. Summary time, yet again.

    Maid Cafe:
A cosplay cafe in which the girls serving role-play as a maid, and the customer as their "goshujinsama" or "ojousama". They serve them food and interact with their customers with games and simple conversations, making the customer feel at home. The maids are "moe", cute, and innocent, and not sexual whatsoever. Sometimes, maids perform with singing and dancing. These are the traditional maid cafes.

Most maid cafes in conventions are obviously based on commercial cafes, in which girls try too hard to be cutesy and everything is overpriced. If you look at the link of the blog, maidrunner, it definitely gives reviews and descriptions of the differences between traditional and commercial cafe.

    (more coming up)

    Butler cafes:
The customer (typically a fujyo), is literally a princess/mistress to the butler. (Oh, and another funny note, some butlers are actually girls! What a lose-lose situation!) They're stern. They're quiet (aka they don't interact much with the customer unlike maid cafes). They're obedient. Just by acting proper and elegant, the customer has their fujyo fantasies take over about being sexually attracted to the butler.

Both are two environments. VERY different environments. Everyone thinks its the same shit since they assume "Oh ok, some servant serving me, cool stuff". It's not, since as I will repeat, because of ENVIRONMENT. It gets even worse when maid cafes have hosts!

With hosts...you're literally splurging all your money on an escort that you don't even get to fuck! You're paying for someone to flirt with you, compliment you, and pretend they like you while you spend a crap ton of money for buying them food, drinks, and sometimes gifts (the gifts apply to those who are regular customers, hence why it's stereotyped that old pervs go to those kinda things).

Seriously, I don't even know how people mix up hosts and maids together. I thought with the amount of anime and manga weeaboos are into, they'd at least know maids, butlers, and hosts are all different things~

    tl;dr
    Maids =/= Butlers =/= Hosts
& do your BASIC research before ever attempting one of these at a con.

They just need to... stop. It was a good idea in theory, but now they're really just making asses of themselves. Especially at the Reunion they had a few weeks ago for the con. Not only were they annoying as fuck, playing games and dancing and generally OMG KAWAII DESU whoring it up for pictures, but the one in the purple got into this huge, bratty fight with someone. Something about how she was better than everyone or something, and how she could do whatever she wanted, blah blah blah.

One of the gathering Attendees here, I can tell you what happened from the outsiders point of view. I was sitting up on the talking to one of the staff members behind them.

The maids had come up and were just hanging out by their stuff, and two of them started to chase a butterfly that was flying around and this hetalia cosplayer starts yelling at them to leave it alone (this hetalia cosplayer had pretty much been ignoring EVERYONE at the gathering) so they simply told her "don't tell me what to do please" and went to get their stuff to move it since they had been at the bottom of the hill more. the Heltalia cosplayer proceeded to get up and start a fight with them insulting the cafe and saying a bunch of stuff that really just sounded like bullshit since there are no complaints against the cafe its self at all. Then she proceeded to PERSONALLY attack the maids to which one of them, then did fight back at her before calling the con head over. From what I heard from staff though, they've had issues with this Heltalia girl before and that shes pretty much banned from this convention because of her actions. Upon talking to other people from the gathering, almost everyone had a complaint about the Hetalia girl being confrontational, and stuff, so it's no real surprise that she started a fight with some one

Do you know how bluntly obvious it is that there's other people who dislike the maids? It's not just one person, like myself, there's a good number of people, (including some of the maids themselves) who hate the cafe. They're just too scared to say anything out of fear of being kicked out of the cafe.

And as for that fight with that Hetalia cosplayer, I saw that the maid was trying to hurt this butterfly by grabbing it by the wings. Pretty much everyone knows not to do that to butterflies, or else it could easily kill them. So, that cosplayer asked not to do that, and the maid snapped at her and such, insulted her, and was generally being a horrid little whelp. I've heard that even Hector is disappointed with her actions lately, and has been in the process of getting rid of the maids as a whole.

Which means that Conji just might be a little better next year.

Mochi Cafe is one of the better cafes in CA that don't get all up in your face with that over-hyperness and fake cutesy moe act. Their dances were really entertaining at Conji, and on Sunday they actually demonstrated on stage how much they knew, doing a TON of dances. They were really good about teaching people the moves too, and also held panels at Conji. If you ask me, I'd say that Mochi Cafe is a really interactive group that's very polite and catering to your needs. They have fun games to play and Wii and all that other shit. It was free too. I think they they just need a bigger room and they're good.

I went to one of Animaid's events and got yelled at 'for being there'. It's not cute for maids to act like that, I wanted to smack the ho upside the head. I also checked out CSU Long Beach's "Annual" Maid Cafe, thinking, "Okay this shit happens only once a year so this shit's GOTTA be good...." Fucking fail. We sat there for half an hour staring at each other at the tables while the maids and butlers stood over in the corner of the room all huddled together like they're gonna make some football play for the touchdown. Then for an hour, they stocked us up on sugar so that we could be happy then all-too-soon crash: pancakes, sodas, candy, cake and ice cream. What kind of shit is that for dinner? I paid 20 bucks plus parking to sit there for 3 hours bored. No games, no cute girls to flirt with. Just shit. Oh yeah, they gave us these cut-out box figures. I made a Pokeball in 10 minutes. I wanted to take the scissors and cut my wrists open for the next 50 minutes.

But Conji was an awesome cafe that was FREE, included with your membership to the con. They had good panels like making your own outfits and maid ettiquete if you're into that. I believe that Animaids don't even make their outfits.

Anyways, to whoever's got a grudge against Conji and Mochi Cafe, stfu and gtfo already. ;\

Maid here. Not telling which one I'm from though. Ask me almost anything.

    Anyhoo, opinions:

First off, a lot fail. And I mean...a lot.

    MAID UNIFORM =/= LOLITA
If you're running a maid cafe, I expect maids, not lolita. I also HATE seeing maids with long kimono-like sleeves, since that's just unsanitary.

I don't like cosplayer maids too. It's understandable if you have a shoot, performance, or something after, but if you don't, leave your Miku wig at home, because if that thing gets in my food, I'll make sure the venue doesn't let your cafe back.

The people in charge of maid cafes need to choose better girls. Sorry, but I want "moe", not some girl who tries too hard to be cute and can't even speak decent Japanese.

Think you're too chubby? Here's a secret: MAKE YOURSELF PRESENTABLE. Don't just throw on a katyusha and maid dress and look like a slob, style your hair, put some make-up on, etc. THIS SHOULD APPLY TO EVERY MAID.

I hate when cafes try to incorporate boys. It's a maid cafe, and I want a girl serving me. And if you have a crossdressing boy working in your cafe, then I won't take your cafe seriously at all since it ruins the whole point of maid cafe. You want a butler cafe? Open your own and keep it out of maid cafe. >>3290005
    >>3289985 is things maid cafes NEED to read.

I've been a customer before too, and I'm very harsh and difficult when things don't go right. I expect the maids to speak "keigo" to me, and I expect them to interact with me.

Some cafe's keep butlers as bodyguards in the cafe and errand boys, but they will dress them to match the cafe.

If she doesn't want to be a maid, then she doesn't have to try out.

Also, maids are supposed to be "moe", not sexual. We also don't dress like fetish maids, kthnx.

Animaid is the only cafe i know of that has the butlers serving. all the other cafes i've had contact with, use them to stand at the front doors and around areas of the cafe. they will occasionally ask how a guest is doing and MAYBE bring them a drink refill but thats usually only when the maids are swamped, or performaning

    As I said, that's understandable.

    But with Animaids...

She isnt sexual she is a virgin XD The outfit she is wearing is just a little costume for a photo shoot type deal. it is a little belly shirt with a hoodie (it isnt that bad reviling just the angle) And a skort (Skirt with shorts) and knee high stalkings. But she would not wear that obviously. She is kind, looks to make sweets and will brighten up anyone's day who she talks with.

Still not a valid excuse in my book, sorry.

Even by reading manga, you should already get the idea about what a host is and that it's NOT a butler.

Host = Escorts you don't fuck, splurge money for someone to flirt with you
Butler = Servant that is stern and polite to fujyo "princess". They DO NOT flirt.

That's like mixing up a geisha and oiran.

Haha, I guess so but the photo-shoot was for something not sexual at all which is funny. She is just more worried that if she ever did try out for the maids she wants one that is in her area and the only one I found is that Mochi maid everyone here has been insulting and she doesn't want to be in them. She is brought up in Japanese culture so she wants it to be as authentic as possible and have no cat ears, tails, overly use Japanese words like kawaii, neko, desu desu,, no carmelldancein, And actual uniform where the body is not fully presented she does Lolita and in lolita you cant show your shoulders and more you put on of clothing the better it is. Any idea's?

I actually have not seen a cafe do the caramel dance at all. that would be interesting to see but then I would probably steal the speakers and run so no one would have to hear that song.
Cafe Ichigo wears ears for their uniforms, well I know a few of the girls do. but most of the better cafes don't let their girls wear ears and stuff, and have rules about the uniforms being certain lengths, usually it's the catholic school girl rule of the skirt has to be the length of your finger tips

I was at con with them and got to hang out with her, she was pretty much extremely exhausted, alot of candid photos look really bad, by the end of the night she just wanted to sit down but the cafe ran till 9-10. she got maybe 2 hours of sleep each night at the con due to room issues since they were using the con suite room for their hotel room, which meant she stayed up later making sure the girls got back to the room and were settled in, and wouldn't sleep until she knew all the girls were safe in the room for the night
