19 KB Gulf Oil Spill Awareness. Laura !ofC/MoKSRs 07/15/10(Thu)16:48 No.3276786
This October PikminLink, Akuriko, Sai, and myself will all be attending RealmsCon here where I live in Corpus Christi, Texas. We have been given the opportunity as guests of the con to do many costuming-related panels and events together because we want to interact with you and learn from eachother. :)

I would like to ask that if you have the time, the money, and the ability to join us here in Ground Zero for this con. If I could ask all of you any one favor, this would be it. Please come here and enjoy our beach convention while we still can. That's the best way to raise awareness about this terrifying situation, is to just be here with us for a weekend so we can love cosplay together.

If you are interested in knowing what the consequences of all the methane being released into the air right now, please feel free to contact me at professordoctorninjalaura@gmail.com and I can give you many verifiable academic sources to check out on your own time.

    Thanks guys, I love you.

The oil is still spilling and the government does not care.

    >>3276822
The oil spill happened because they hit a huge pocket of methane. The oil is irrelevant now compared to the damage the methane with have on the atmosphere and climate worldwide. The increase of population in just the last century of farting methane has already altered the climate. Now more methane has been pouring out every day than we could produce in generations of reproduction. Go on wikipedia and look up 'methane hydrate'. The oil isn't the immediate ecological concern.

The oil is capped and no longer leaking. The METHANE HYDRATE they hit going from a solid to a gas in our atmosphere is the problem the media is not addressing. This is ok, because panic and chaos would only bring more suffering to people. Those who understand the information provided in the links I posted will understand and share it with their loved ones. Otherwise all we can do is love eachother right now.

Going to a small texas con to "raise awareness" isnt going to do much.Donate your time to a local conservation area and set asside that con money to go directly into organizations trying to make a positive difference. Not to say stimulating awareness isnt a noble pursuit but a con isnt the most effective location.

The con is the only thing I can offer to people right now. Getting your attention by posting it here is the biggest audience I have the ability to reach right now. I don't ask you to understand my feelings, but all I'm concerned about right now is you reading these words and maybe getting more people to come be here with us. Just being together here in the Gulf is enough. Go to your local cons in GA, LA, TX, FL and everywhere near the Gulf. Make your own gatherings. Show love outside yourself. Giving you value gives me value.

I've already been actively trying to keep updating my facebook with the same information I've provided here for people to read. The awareness part is just the simple choice for someone to make by clicking my links to the most reliable sources I have been able to find and share with you. I really didn't want to post here for my own personal reasons, but I know the people who know me well enough to know how difficult it is for me to face you all by becoming a target for hateful words will also know that if I'm posting here I'm dead fucking serious for once in my life. All I want is to tell people to be with the people they love right now and that's the best I can do for anyone by myself.

Hmm. Awareness was never really an issue if you live in the Gulf states. I can barely go a day without talking about or hearing about the oil spill here in Louisiana. Unfortunately, the powers that be are doing little to let people actually assist in cleanup. I don't honestly see any way people can help by being aware or not. It's a big bureaucratic mess now. The president's solution here was to shut down all of the offshore rigs for six months, putting many more people out of work. Our government, always a step in the right direction. Sorry, I'm just cynical and jaded and know from being politically aware that nothing will change and we'll be poisoned and dying from breathing bad air before anyone mentions it on television. Nothing will change that, a small active group will never end the apathy of our nation.

No offense, but I think a cute girl getting arrested for taking photos of her homeland will get more proper media attention then some chick going to an anime convention.

    Duh

But in all seriousness, I can think about 10 different charities I would rather give my money to than going to a con to dress up in costume under the guise of supporting a cause. Will proceeds from the con go to clean-up, boom purchasing, vet costs for the animals covered in oil, relief for the fishermen who's entire livlihoods are completely ruined, and the preservation of whatever life in the Gulf ecosystem that's left?

And how about the natural gas farms throughout the United States poisoning drinking water for Americans?

There are a million and a half things wrong with this country and I honestly do not believe that going to one con in Texas out of however many they have to support is really going to do shit when efforts should be concentrated to those actually doing something.

I think a con in the name of bringing more awareness to this disaster is not a bad idea. Much like many fund raising events people come for more than the fund raising, weather that is food or entertainment or people in silly costumes. With a disaster of this size, and the shear amount of effort being put into covering it up and making it seem less than it is, I think ANY attention being brought to it is more than important.

Mistake #1 was posting that you're guests at a con and that you're going to be doing costuming-related panels and putting that next to a real deal disaster without actually providing much of anything other than links to methane being released into the air and explosions and I don't even know what.

Mistake #2 is saying if you can't do anything, we can all love each other. Love does not clean up the Gulf, money does. Money that can be used in far more effective ways than going to a con near a beach to enjoy it while you can.

If you real deal cared about what's going on down there, you wouldn't be promoting a con that few people go to to try to get money for that con. You would donate, you can even set up a donation station at the con so 100% of the proceeds can go to whatever relief efforts of your choice. To me (and apparently a lot of other people), this sounds like you're advertising a con that you and your friends are attending and that we should all love and hug under the blanket of methane in the air instead of actually doing something.

    Dear Mr. Velasquez,

I understand Laura Phillips is guest to your convention, and she does over years of experience in the convention and cosplaying scene, but her recent actions in which she is promoting your convention is causing controversy due to its sensitive nature.

    http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?p=3547980#post3547980

Now, I understand the need to promote conventions, but to use a serious disaster such as the one currently affecting the Gulf as a way to garner more attendees is not the way to do it and reflects poorly on your choice in having her as a guest as well as the convention as a whole.

My suggestion, if you (and I use that lightly since she's named your convention in the thread) would like to have some sort of donation fund set up to local relief efforts, please do so at your convention. But the way she worded her entry in the cosplay.com thread shows poor judgement on using a disaster as a way to get more attendees as opposed to providing information for ways to donate to the cause and to directly say your convention will be having a relief fund set up or some proceeds from your convention will go towards relief efforts.

    Thank you for your time,

    Sonnya Paz

Done and done. Sorry Laura, but I cannot support these shenanigans using a con as a way to get false awareness to the issues at hand. I'm disgusted with what's going on down there, but to use that as a way to get more attendees? No thank you.

I say props for attempting to promote some sort of awareness at the convention. A fundraiser where 100% of the profits raised would look good too.

As for the "attentionwhoring" part..../DRAMA/ seems to be split down the middle. Some tire of the endless Worship Miyu threads, others revel in reliving her past pictures and cosplays. Maybe she's going to start cosplaying again, who knows? We've seen the pics of her in the red wig....
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)23:48 No.3279195
Why so much Miyu hate? I thought everyone here would want her to cosplay so they could put more pics of her all over the place....
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)23:49 No.3279198
You know you're a comtemptable cunt when even the play-nice debutantes at coscom spit on you and shut down your thread.

Dr Teng's opinion from the cosplay.com thread sounds like a good idea:

I've got a suggestion. Why doesn't the convention remove the guest that's spreading misinformation and donate the cost of bringing her to the convention to a Gulf Coast charity instead?

Hey Kham and Laura, good job begging your oldfag mod friend to shut this shit down before Laura keeps embarrassing herself.

She's put on a couple costume in the past 10 years that she didn't even make. She is not a cosplayer! Get this through your idiot heads. Invite some real cosplay guests, Realmscon. You just look stupid now.

lol now sit back and watch how Laura tries to cling to PL to try and gain popularity and people's favor. You are a sick woman Laura, using this as an opportunity to try and make people like you. You very well may go to hell for this one.

Wasn't Miyu. And I'm not a Miyutard, either. I'm one of the anons that usually believe she selfposts for attention, but this one seems..genuine. If she wanted attention, she'd post another Pretty Me picture.

    >>3279226
Did she admit to not making them? I've got friends that buy costumes online and model them beautifully. I'd definitely classify them as Cosplayers.

So your friend who bought a couple costumes are qualified to hold panels as a cosplayer? Yeah, no.

This is on par with saying that we should all go to NYAF to try and remember/respect the memory of sept 11. Jerking people's emotions or attachments to something for the sake of promoting something as fucking stupid as an anime convention or a group of cosplayers.

If I ever saw Miyu I'd fucking spit in her face

Not the anon you were responding to, but MIYU IS FUCKINC CRAZY. Not in like the partygirl crazy type of way, should be put in a mental institution crazy. She's not being genuine, she's being egotistical. At the most, she's probably conditioned herself into believing she's an amazing selfless person for doing this when it's really just so she can try and cling to PL for popularity and to try to get people to like her. It's really sick, she's a horrible person.

    >>3279265
Oh, I never said they were, but Miyu has more popularity that them and me put together. I promise you, people'd show up for her panels just based on HER. Case in point, look how retarded in the head people go over topics that involve her. Half rage, half defend...
    >> Anonymous 07/16/10(Fri)00:03 No.3279296
Note how the usual miyutard tripfags are strategically staying out of the thread. Not so easy to defend her when she's actually opening her mouth.

    >>3279287
lol. miyu isn't a celebrity. The only place she's even known is here on /cgl/. And that's mostly just as a forced meme. Even retards like JJ are more well-known than her.
    >> Anonymous 07/16/10(Fri)00:05 No.3279309
    >>3279287
    the defend part is HER

She is unknown outside of 4chan, and lies about her "modeling career" to garner attention along with posting nudes on otaku booty.

What would she talk about at a panel? She's never made a costume. Never been to many conventions. Never invited anywhere that wasn't a convention where she lives and she isn't listed as a guest anyway so I question that part.

There are REAL top cosplayers out there, and she is not one of them.

Miyu, please stop posting convoluted statements wherein you try to sound more intelligent than the drop out stripper that you are. All it does is prove how utterly unintelligent you are.

That being said, if you kill yourself, I'll donate my entire trust fund to the oil spill relief effort.

Wow, I was really indifferent about Miyu before this thread, and only lurked in the threads about her for the lulz that always ensued...

But now I fucking hate her. This is absolutely disgusting, and the fact that she honestly sees nothing wrong with what she's doing makes me sick to my stomach. I can't believe ANYONE who isn't a troll has enough of a soul to defend her in any capacity.
