time: I worked on a production of The Laramie Project this past winter.
We live in a pretty conservative part of Michigan, but no one in our
city raised a bit of objection towards the play - that is, until
someone contacted the WBC and notified them of the production. The WBC
then listed our opening night on their picket schedule. The GSA at our
school found out, and subsequently all hell broke loose. They wanted to
stage an out-of-control counter protest, kids were threatening to
physically assault the WBC members, etc. It got out of hand pretty
quickly. Fortunately, the WBC never showed up, preventing what probably
could have been a disaster. Point of this: It's been mentioned
already in this thread, but I want to reiterate it. DO NOT PHYSICALLY
ATTACK THEM. They'll sue you to kingdom come. That's what they do. They
antagonize you in an effort to get you to assault them. Then they sue
you. They win, you lose; rocks fall, everyone dies. Really, the
best way to stage a counter-protest against the WBC is to be completely
and utterly silent. Go there with your signs and your costumes, but
don't even acknowledge them. Don't respond to the things they shout at
you, don't get into an argument - because you WILL NOT win with them.
They won't listen to logic. ...of course, this IS Comic-Con, so
the silent route probably won't work. Ever. In this case, just don't
make complete idiots of yourselves. Have your fun, support your own
causes, but don't be stupid. If the WBC is acting like [relatively]
mature adults while the Comic-Con crowd is grinding on each other,
simulating gay sex, or generally acting like /b/tards... who do you
think the people driving by will side with? TL;DR: The goal
of the WBC is to make you act like idiots, and therefore make them look
better in comparison. Don't let them achieve that goal.
