A 5000 person event at a university costs around $200,000. Supposedly.

well first you have to figure out how much it costs to rent a place and that is your base.
Then you have to figure out the cost of getting a guest. Most require you to pay for their transportation and room along with a pay of 150 (thats the general min, bigger stars want more)
So those are your two big costs right there and you have to pay those up front.
You also have to figure out how to advertise.
Are you going to buy some stuff, or try and do it all by word of mouth?
I'm not sure what hotels want when you ask for a block since they get paid by the attendees.

Also while you generally dont pay your work force, they generally get comped badge for next year after working 12 hours

    no.. really?

You could try hiring a local cafe and putting that owl with that hose in it as guests and hang up some home-printed posters. I'm sure you'll get about 150 people if you include the owl

Seriously, that owl's annoyed look is cute.

if you're in the boston area there is a mini one day "con"
    called otaku-fest.
They rented out a pub or something and they had a good turnout. I dont know ho much they made vs what they paid to get it, but they put together a second one

One of my friends runs a mid-sized northeastern convention he started back in 2003 out of his college. Cost him about 20,000-30,000 initial startup from what I've heard, got 800 people the first year, I think they were paying 50 bucks a head to get in that first year at the door, not including reduced fare for people who only came for a day. He had the benefit of good timing and a room mate who runs a successful webcomic as a draw, along with some other good guests and great staffers.
