20 KB FUCKING CAPES, HOW DO THEY WORK?! Anonymous 07/12/10(Mon)21:00 No.3259715
Hey /cgl/ this is something that always bothered me. Is there way to make capes look good IRL? I don't even care if it doesn't have that flowy look, just so as long it's distinctive enough to be recognized as a cape and look good while being worn.

Easy modo: Long or short doesn't matter either, just so as long as its a cape.

We live in the 21st century, capes don't apply anymore dickweed.

I've seen a few where people sewed wire into the edge to be able to make it look however they wanted. There was a particularly awesome Kaiba. Not a cape, but same idea.

There's 3 ways to make a cape really, and they look different in the end, so you'll have to figure out what look is best.

Big rectangle either gathered or pinned in front - This is a traditional renfaire type cape, doesn't sit neatly over the shoulders and has a lot of bulk in front

Circle or pie wedge - fuller at the bottom than the top, has some extra bulk at the shoulders

Fitted with seams at the sides - this is fitted to the shoulders and should sit neatly and smooth across the front and back

Harlock over there has 2 things going on. The long cape is a pie wedge, and the short one is fitted to his shoulders.

This could be applicable. Any pictures?

Any pictures of the three types of capes?

Is there a particular name for that effect where there's a shoulder cape over a long cape? I've seen it quite a few times.

The shoulder cape is called a mantle, I believe.

It looks ok in pictures sometimes when you do that, but mostly it makes the rest of the cape drape badly and move strangely. Also I'm guessing that it doesn't hold up well in convention crowds and gets caught on people and bent out of shape.
