Cons are just places to hang out with friends and meet people. Only neckbeards care about panels or guests. If you're socializing then any con can be great.

Most cons when they first start out are about the socializing. As they grow they loose that vibe and become more of a business for the organizers. Fanime was the same. That's why I stopped going to most cons.

i had a great time at AX just chillin with freinds and meeting new people. you cant be afraid to jsut talk to people at cons, its more than a place to shop and get your picture taken

also yur right the panels are bullshit sometimes, but some gems still exist like the otaku parlimentary debate which will always be entertaining if for nothign else than hearing people make completely arbitrary arguements that they think are really convincing

I'm definitely going to go next year, mainly because I'd love to see all my west coast buddies and see what the con itself is like.
That or I'll just try and make it to ALA instead.

just got back from AX, shit was pretty cool, and i'm going to go again next year since I live so close to it...

I brought two of my friends to AX for the first time. AX was epic, all the random photoshoots and chicks in cosplay. We plan on going next year again.

This brings up an interesting point. Why do we need to go to cons to see our friends? It would probably cost friends from out of state less money to decide "hey I'm gonna come visit you one weekend" and then you can hang out that way. Do we really need cons if it's just for socializing? I only go to the less commercial cons that have guests and panels I like now. I still go with a local core group of friends and we have a great time, but if my out of state friends don't give enough of a shit about me to come to my parties or make time to hang out with me outside of cons, then fuck 'em.

It's funny how people here claim AX "sucked" yet shitty small cons like ALA, where there is hardly anything to do at all, is claimed to be "great".

I usually get a badge but all my cosplaying/hanging out is done outside of the things you need a badge for. Maybe I'll just get a one day badge next year for the masq or whatever. I find I like AX much more if I stay out of the dealer's hall, lol.

I didn't even register this year. $75 + $30 for each main event? Fuck that.

I just hung out in the halls, talked with people, took pictures, and borrowed a friend's badge if I needed to get into something.

I thought the con as a whole was pretty lame, but the people I hung out with/ran into were a lot of fun. It's too bad the guy who took over is a giant douchebag. I'm surprised I wasn't charged for breathing.
